Why do we care so much about celebrities?

Ashley

Alright, so this just hit me. Humans revolve their lives around celebrities.
It's gotten to the point where we have those ridiculous celebrity gossip shows that discuss "George Clooney's latest girlfriend", "Miley Cyrus' new haircut", "Katy Perry tweets ______".
Or I hear stories about people who wait hours, days even, outside to meet or just see this celebrity.
Then there are posters, life-size cut-outs, etc. of these people.
Magazines are filled with pointless celebrity stories.
These people have millions of Twitter followers.
They make millions off of movies, albums, books, clothing lines, etc.
When a celebrity passes away, I can't watch a single news channel that doesn't mention it. I'm not trying to sound heartless, but it seems like a celebrity's death is in the news for weeks. Like it's that important. (Plenty of people I am close with have passed away and where is there news story?)
I'll admit: I've found myself reading a magazine, or listening in on that celebrity gossip show. But I find it ridiculous. Go ask a teenager to name the Chief of Justice. They won't be able to. Now ask them to name every single Kardashian and Jenner, piece of cake.
So my question is why do we care so much?

Answer
I read an interesting theory somewhere, it compared celebs to those popular kids back in our school days and drew many similarities from the two, such as how almost everyone pays attention to what they say and do, and almost everyone would die for a chance to become one of them.
It makes sense I suppose, it takes hard work to become famous and make it to the top, so people tend to see that as successful and want to be like them.

So I guess it's just in our human nature. And evolution-wise, gossiping helps with better survival because it gives us a sense of who is friendly and who is not, who to get close to and who to stay away from in traditionally small communities (like school, but not so much in the celeb world as I doubt we'll ever meet them face-to-face).

Another thing is, I suppose talking about celebrities gives us a common subject at parties and gathering, as opposed to having nothing in common to talk about resulting in awkward silences.

Also, having favorite celebrities can also become part of our personality, and can be used to create bonds between other people who have the same interests. For example, fan groups can be great places to make friends and connect with other people who your passion. They can be used to satisfy our social needs. Humans are social creatures after all, if we lived in an isolated box, it wouldn't do us much good would it?

Just want to add, there is also a certain point when too much is too much. If someone's having their entire life revolved around celebrity gossip that they've forgotten how to live, then they should probably go into counselling.
