Do adopted children hate their biological parents?

I read an article about adoption on a popular news site today, and in the comments there were quite a few people who were not adopted referring to biological parents as flawed, stupid, drug addicted, cowardly deadbeats. There were also some individuals who are adopted calling their birth parents sperm and egg donors and losers. It seemed like many people truly hate the biological parents, especially the biological mothers.
Is it common for adopted people to hate their biological parents? Is it common for society to assume anyone who places a child for adoption is a stupid drug addicted cowardly loser?
Jas, I would really appreciate it if you would contact me. I made my email public in case you choose to do so. I need some help.

Answer
Fist we need to stop the ignorance of society instantly thinking that a mother placed their child for adoption, MOST do not! Most are coerced or forced, lied to and babies stolen for the black market, purpose sold for money.

With the adoptee's they have been told that is what their parents are, so they believe it.
There are many cases where the non-identifying information on the parents have been purposely changed from what the parents have stated on themselves. Lies are told to the a-parents and they in turn tell these lies to the kids, and many a-parents even make up stories so that their child will not do a search for their true rightful identity.

The people that were not adopted do not have respect for anyone giving up their flesh and blood on purpose. Most do not know how it goes for a vulnerable young mother thinking she's stuck with no way out.

Just as society is assuming adoption is good, so do many assume that bio parents are all evil.

I don't see your email address. I'll contact you, yes.

How many kids belong to a soccer team?

Q. I want to start a soccer team for kids ages 4-10. I want to know how many kids belong in each soccer team (8?10?12?) and what does each kid do (benchwarmer, goalie, ???) THANK YOU all help is appreciated, please reply asap.

Answer
Well you play 11 players, one in goal and 11 outfields, but you would generally need to have 3 substitues aswell (although this isn't essential when you're only playing with kids) On the pitch 4-4-2 is the most popular formation. It's the most common formation in British football. It is an adaptable system where the midfield give plenty of support to both the defence and the attack.
You are likely to get players who are more attacking and more defensive than others within this system.
So deciding how to play against a team with a 4-4-2 formation might not be as obvious as it would appear sometimes. Sometimes, one of the two central midfielders will be expected to get more forward to support the strikers. Sometimes the two midfielders will take turns in pushing forward to keep the defenders guessing.

There's also a 4-4-3, 5-3-2, 4-5-1, 4-4-1-1 and a diamond formation that can be used. The best place to go for complete rules and information is to:

What's so special about the royal wedding?

helloother

I've been hearing about it on the news and on Twitter. I'm not extremely into celebrity gossip but I'm curious as to why this seems so big? I know it's a wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, but what makes them & their wedding so big?

Answer
He's second in line to the throne. It is possible some day she will become queen. Any children they may have will likely become the king or queen of England some day.

He carries on a tradition of the monarchy for those nations which are still in the Commonwealth and are not republics. She'll presumably be making trips to various places, opening hospitals, having ships named after her, etc. Her children might become the official head of state for various countries and have their pictures on the back of their money.

Kate will also become a princess. This being the ultimate fantasy of many young (and not so young) girls fed by fairy tales, Disney films, romance novels, etc. It's a big, lavish wedding ceremony with lots no expenses spared -- palace guards, horses, carriages, massive churches, dresses costing a small fortune, thousands of people cheering them, etc. Again, feeding into wedding fantasies.

Many people remember the wedding of William's father and mother and her death. For those following William, folks are normally happy that he's happy and a nostalgia over his parents wedding.

A judge did not release the $300,000 bail that was set when he was arrested last year in connection with bounty hunting in Mexico. He paid the bail but will not get the money back even though the case has pretty much been dropped.

Do they still use un-paid baggers at military commissaries?

I hate Wal-Mart as much as the next guy and in fact I never shop there, for various reasons. But the latest news that they use unpaid teens to bag groceries in Mexico, instead relying on tips... I recall shopping at McChord Air Base in the 1980's and the baggers were also not paid. They relied on tips. Do military bases still use this practice and if so, why can't Wal-Mart?
.
McChord is in Washington state

Answer
i'm not sure if they still do but as far into the mid to late 90's they still did when i shopped at the commissary at Jax Naval Air Station.....i hate Wal-Mart too and like you I have reasons for not shopping there (mostly becasue its inconvenient and time-consuming) and i didnt even know they had them in mexico

Uggh, I have to write this all over again....
So I originally thought 'Baby Girl, I will Avenge You' Would work but now I'm like....?....
This is not supposed to be very long or complicated, I just need to write 15 pages of it for an essay type thing. But here it is:

A women walks into a grand mall, ready to shop for her baby girl. The new mother runs into an old friend of hers from college and decides to leave her child and her belongings with him so she could go to the restroom . Him working and not having children of his own, leaves him careless. The mother left for what she thought would be for a few, very short minutes. When you gotta go, you gotta go, right? No more than a minute later she comes out and is horrified to see her daughter gone. After the police are called, search men are sent out and the security tapes are pulled up, its discovered that the child was kidnapped. Authorities were able to pull a man's face onto the screen, but when put into face recognition software .......the man is discovered to be dead. Approximately since 3 years ago. So her daughter was nabbed by a ghost? After countless days of searching, crying and confusion, the new mother's daughter turns up dead in a football stadium. Enraged, the mother sends out a vile warning through the news sent out across the world, "I will find you and murder your heartless soul!" and thus declaring her vengeance on the man for her daughter's death. It ends with the start of her 'hunt'.

Please realize this is VERY rough and SUPPOSED to be short. Any advice on a better plot or suggestions for a more detailed 'threat' the mother sends out will also be helpful. THANK YOU IF YOUR ABLE TO COME UP WITH A TITLE!!!

Answer
"Retribution"

Is this plot/storyline any good? Can you rate it? PLEASE ANSWER!?

This is not supposed to be very long or complicated, I just need to write 15 pages of it. But here it is:
Title: Baby Girl, I Shall Avenge You (let me know if you have a better title)
A women walks into a glorious, brand new mall, ready to shop for her baby girl. The new mother sits her baby girl down in a restaurant chair to go to the restroom for one tiny second. When you gotta go, you gotta go, right? No more than a minute later she comes out and is horrified to see her daughter gone. After the police are called, search men are sent and the video tapes are pulled up, its discovered that the child was kidnapped. Security is able to pull a man's face onto the screen, but when put into police database.......the man is found to be dead. Exactly 5 years ago. So her daughter was nabbed by a ghost? After countless days of searching, crying and confusion, the new mother's daughter turns up dead in a football stadium. Enraged, the mother sends a death treat through the news across the world, declaring her vengeance on the man for her daughter's death. It ends with the start of her 'hunt'.

What do you think? Interesting enough? Would you read it? And what person, out of curiosity, would you put it in? 1st or 3rd? OOOHHH, and one more thing...what would you rate it out of ten?
THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH, if you have any suggestions or advice, GREATLY APPRECIATED!
Okay, thanks guys for answering! (no matter how prissy......XP) And I guess I left out some key facts, that AT THE TIME, I didn't think mattered in a basic summary.
1) No, the girl wasn't ACTUALLY left alone, but with an old friend the mother ran into and trusted. He was working so he didn't exactly pay that close attention to the little girl.He doesn't have kids so he was kind of careless.
2) I understand what machine is really used or called for the 'police database', but again, didn't think it MATTERED when I was asking a simple (basic) question.
3) The ghost man being dead and all is part of an elaborate scheme where him and his comrades faked his death. Thats where the football stadium comes into play and the reason the girl was ever needed. Again, a background story that was the reason for why the girl was taken.
3) NONE of the details (except for 1) is actually NEEDED for the story because I only need to write 15 PAGES of it. And excuse my grammar,

Answer
Almost every aspect of this story is unbelievable. You may as well stick in some centaurs and an asteroid impact.

In my experience no woman has ever been able to use a public restroom for "one tiny second". Also many public restrooms have some facility for infants to be taken inside. And the mother would still have to answer the child endangerment issue even if she does claim to have left the child with a friend.

You may think these plot-holes are minor things that can be sorted out later, but you'll find that explaining away these issues are a digression that soak up the word-count and take pace away from the story.

Even if digital face-recognition technology were capable of identifying the baby-snatcher (who would have to have had a previous conviction) no-one would think that he is a ghost if there is video evidence of him walking around a shopping mall. If someone's gone to the trouble of faking their death and changing their identity they wouldn't reveal themselves by committing a crime in a public place with witnesses and CCTV cameras.

Making death threats is ILLEGAL. Taking the law into your own hands is ILLEGAL. A public announcement of a death threat would contravene any news broadcaster's policy of spreading terror messages. Even if she tried it spontaneously in a live broadcast, there is a three-second facility that enables the broadcaster to blackout their programming to stop the message going out.

Where's the daddy in all of this?

It's no good saying that details aren't needed and plot-holes don't matter. They do. Almost everyone who's answered this question so far has told you that it is yarbles, and you ought to take that on board.

****Suggestions:
1. Begin your story with the discovery of the baby snatching on video - recount whatever happens before with exposition if necessary.
2. Base the subsequent police investigation on witness testimony, not technology.
3. Ditch the faked death aspect. It's not as interesting as you think.
4. For the vengeance aspect introduce a sympathetic maverick detective willing to work both sides of the law, or an organized crime network sub-plot where the mother has gang links.
5. Consider telling the story from someone other than the mother's point-of-view.

As always I hate first person narratives. This would be better written in the third person. I think it's a better way of conveying the emotions of the mother without annoying the reader and gives you the opportunity to tell the story from multiple perspectives eg the mall security guard's, the police detective's and the baby snatcher's.

Will Mac's growth make it a bigger target?

By Will Sturgeon, Silicon.com
Published on ZDNet News: August 2, 2006, 6:29 AM PT

A recent upturn in Apple's sales of its Mac computers has added fuel to concerns the Mac community's days of claiming a secure upper-hand may be numbered.

Last week it was revealed that Apple's shipments of its Mac machines had shown double digit growth, year-on-year, with analysts suggesting the growth is set to continue with more PC switchers in the pipeline.

And while that is great news for Apple and its marketing prowess, it has coincided with the question of Mac security rearing its head once more, with three large security vendors issuing words of warning for the Mac faithful while Apple remains tight-lipped about the security of its machines.

Mark Sunner, CTO of MessageLabs, said: "Now, as Macs become more popular, we're seeing an increase in attacks targeting OS X." Greg Day, senior antivirus researcher at McAfee, said his company's recent Global Threat Report found evidence to support that claim.

Day told silicon.com: "Microsoft has the biggest bull's-eye on it but there's a lot of interest in Apple right now. There have been more vulnerabilities discovered in OS X than in XP over the past two years."

Day said 95 vulnerabilities have been discovered in XP during that time compared to 238 in OS X.

Jay Heiser, research VP at Gartner, said he would expect to see the risks from owning a Mac increase with popularity and a greater market share. "The relative 'safety' of the Mac environment is not so much an issue of obscurity, as it is a lack of hack-leverage and perhaps biological diversity," said Heiser. "From the attacker's point of view, the bigger the set of logically identical targets, the bigger the payoff in creating 'crimeware.'

"Clearly, as the number of Macs increase, it becomes more appealing to target them."

Heiser added: "The most important consideration is the amount of code. The level of vulnerability is a function of the size of the code-base and it is inevitable that the Mac OS contains a significant number of unrecognized vulnerabilities."

Last week Russian antivirus vendor Kaspersky Labs also waded in to the Mac security debate, with its own findings reporting a similar hike in the number of vulnerabilities found in OS X. And while vulnerabilities and actual proven exploits are very different things, Kaspersky Labs echoed the concerns of others, saying 60 vulnerabilities discovered in the first half of 2006 suggests if growing popularity were to invite more attacks this could soon become a problem.

McAfee's Day also criticized Apple for being slow to address these vulnerabilities--adding that Microsoft, albeit due to an unflattering history of vulnerabilities, is at least largely on top of the situation.

He said: "I think Apple has not been as organized as Microsoft has had to be through necessity at dealing with vulnerabilities."

At the time of writing Apple had failed to comment.

Apple fixes 26 Mac OS flaws

By Joris Evers, CNET News.com
Published on ZDNet News: August 2, 2006, 5:25 AM PT

Apple Computer issued on Tuesday updates for its Mac OS X operating system to fix 26 security flaws, some serious.

Several of the vulnerabilities affect the way in which Mac OS X handles images and the file-sharing capabilities of the software, according to an Apple security advisory. Other flaws were found and fixed within components such as Fetchmail, file compression features, and DHCP networking functionality, Apple said.

The vulnerabilities could enable a variety of attacks, security company Symantec said in an advisory sent out to customers of its DeepSight intelligence service. "Remote attackers can execute arbitrary code, trigger denial-of-service conditions, elevate privileges, and disclose potentially sensitive information," Symantec said.

Apple credits a number of security researchers with finding the flaws. These include researchers employed by Google and Mozilla, as well as Tom Ferris, a freelance security researcher who has disclosed limited information on some Apple bugs in the past.

The bulk of the Mac OS X flaws affect both the client and server versions of the operating system. Attackers could exploit several of the vulnerabilities, specifically those related to image processing and file compression, by crafting malicious files and tricking people into opening them, Apple said. This attack method is seen often on computers that run Microsoft's Windows operating system.

A handful of flaws related to file sharing, handled by the Mac OS X AFP server, could expose user data or let a malicious user gain elevated privileges a system running Mac OS X or cause a crash, Apple said.

The update also increases the length of the passkey used for pairing Bluetooth devices with Mac computers, Apple said. This could provide enhanced security for the use of Macs with wireless devices that use Bluetooth technology.

Mac OS X users are urged to upgrade in order to protect their systems against possible attacks that may exploit the flaws. Symantec said that it doesn't know of current attack code for any of the issues, though some may not require specific exploit code, the company said.

Apple has released Security Update 2006-004 to address the issues. The update is available from the Software Update pane in System Preferences on Mac OS X systems or through Apple's Web site. Until now, Apple's most recent security update came out in late June.

I have just started a new YouTube channel called PacmanPeopleVideos. I haven't posted any videos yet, but I want to know what I should post that people will want to watch (Gaming, skits, news etc). Also, it would help if I got tips to get my channel popular. Thanks ð

Answer
Since there is already alot of people doing it. Your video need to be very interesting. Or you need to be very good at a video game and show them how to achieve this. once you recorded your video check the sound of it.. If you need to pump the volume to max to understand what you tell us this ian't good!

And then you can promote your channel via facebook, twitter, google+ ect... If people love it they will spread the word. The only nice way to keep your audience is to have content people intereted in.

Good luck!

What did he actualyl do? He goes out there, wins 8 battle,s losses 8 battles, not a great general as you can esee. Then he retires somehow becomes president doesn't don aything important and for some reason he becomes bafther of america. Seems very overaated. I couldhave done everything he did. The most overrated person in history.

Answer
To best answer your question I am posting an article from the N.Y. Post

Before I do I would like to say that I have reservations about whether or not you or anyone else would have the integrity to do what Washington did certainly there are no polititions today who have the same virtues as Washington.

Maybe a little more research on your part would enlighten you.It is most certainly not as cut and dry as eight battles won, eight battles lost, retirement and then "SOMEHOW" becoming the 1st president.

Washington was indeed a man of great moral fiber and virtue,a humble patriot who believed in freedom as a human right.

Enough from me here is the article from the N.Y.Post that I promised :

by Rich Lowry
July 3, 2008

'DECADES later the Declaration of Independence was canonized as American scripture," historian Walter McDougall writes of the nation's founding document, "but in 1776 it was generally read once - in army camps, taverns, and village greens - cheered, and forgotten."

Its fate might have been to be forgotten forevermore, if it weren't for George Washington and his Continental Army. When our great adventure in liberty still seemed an impossible risk, they were the embodiment and vindicators of the Declaration. Our nation was born on the shoulders of an army, whose exertions and principled patriotism gave the famous parchment its life.

Besides the Continental Congress - which hardly covered itself in glory - the Army was our first national institution. It joined together well-mannered Virginians, quarrelsome Yankees and backcountry riflemen in an incubator of the nation.

Independence from Britain was hardly a unanimous proposition. John Adams thought a third of the country supported it, a third opposed and a third was neutral. It was on the Army that independence would stand or fall, and Gen. Washington's strategic imperative was always to preserve the Army to preserve the nation.

He knew if he kept the Army alive, eventually the British would tire. And keep it alive he did, though sometimes by the barest of margins. After the war, Washington marveled that "such a force as Great Britain has employed for eight years in this country could be baffled in their plan of subjugating it, by numbers infinitely less, composed of men oftentimes half starved, always in rags, without pay."

Washington gathered around him an officer corps he called his military family. They were talented and devoted to him and - more importantly - to the principles of the cause. Washington's chief of staff, Alexander Hamilton, insisted that the rights of man "are written, as with a sunbeam, in the whole volume of human nature by the hand of the divinity itself and can never be erased or obscured by mortal power."

A revolution always faces at least two threats - from its outright enemies and from its friends, who often betray it and seize power for themselves.

As important as any of Washington's military successes was the example he set in dealing with the Continental Congress and - despite all the frustrations getting his Army paid and equipped - deferring to civil authority. As the French author Chevalier de Chastellux said during the Revolution, "This is the seventh year that he has commanded the army and he has obeyed Congress: More need not be said."

When, at the war's end, a colonel sent Washington a letter suggesting he become king, he wrote back a stern rebuke. Washington biographer Richard Brookhiser - whose latest book is "George Washington on Leadership" - notes that Washington asked for written confirmation from his aides that his reply had been sent, the only time he made such a request during the war.

Of course, when the war ended, he resigned his command and returned to Mount Vernon. Upon hearing the news, an astonished King George III said, "If he does that, he will be the greatest man in the world." Before he did, Washington had a last instance of drama with his Army. Camped in Newburgh, NY, at the end of the war in 1783, the Army grew restive because Congress was tardy in paying it. Insurrection was in the air.

In a tense meeting with his officers, Washington told them that in rejecting rebellion, "You will give one more distinguished proof of unexampled patriotism and patient virtue, rising superior to the pressure of the most complicated sufferings; And you will, by the dignity of your Conduct, afford occasion of Posterity to say, when speaking of the glorious example you have exhibited to Mankind, 'had this day been wanting, the World had never seen the last stage of perfection to which human nature is capable of attaining.' "

The day wasn't wanting, nor were the men in arms who vindicated the Declaration.

End Article.

Hopefully this article has garnered a bit of repsect for Washington in your eyes.

I will agree with you the to an extent the founding fathers of this nation have been lionized by history, but I believe that these men were great men who had the fortitude and audacity to stand up to the tyranny of King George III and fight for the liberation of America.

So even if history has painted them as more glorious heroes than what they actually were, their patriotism and acts of bravery and self sacrifice set them far above the polititions(and for that matter most citizens) of modern times.

what news channel do you trust the most?

larry h

there are many news sourses out there. Which one do you trust for the truth in news without some agenda behind it?

Answer
Fox News. They give unbiased reporting.

Most people don't know the difference between a "talk show" and news. The simple minded liberals watch the Fox talk shows and think it is the news.

You see much more in-depth reporting on Fox than on any other station. Of course the conservative slant of the talk show hosts bring in the money where they can pay for good journalism. If you're a journalist, you are doing your best to get to Fox as all others are failing and you will eventually be out of a job. Fox only gets the cream of the crop journalists.

Just flip back and forth between a breaking story on Fox and then CNN, and it is a no-brainer who gives the best coverage. MSNBC and the other 3 networks are jokes. They just don't have the resources that Fox has.

I have been amazed time and time again when Fox reported something first and was accurate. CNN came out with the breaking story later and made mistakes. Even hours later CNN was missing the actual story.

Look at Katrina, Israel Attacks Gaza/Hamas, Russia and Georgia Go To War, Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich Arrested for Corruption, Proposition 8 Passes, Fidel Castro resigns as President of Cuba, Internet Overtakes Newspapers as News Outlet, India Bombings, Eliot Spitzer, Hadron Collider, etc. If you like news, you will know flipping between CNN and Fox that Fox is best. MSNBC is simply a joke... CNBC is not bad even covering outside their focus. CBS, ABC is a joke. NBC is still far behind CNN and Fox, but not as bad as the rest.

What's the difference between a memoir & an autobiography?

Kristie

They both seem to be pretty much the same. Is it something technical that separates them? Or is it just two ways of saying the same thing?

Answer
An autobiography, from the Greek auton, 'self', bios, 'life' and graphein, 'write', is a biography written by the subject or composed conjointly with a collaborative writer (styled "as told to" or "with"). The term dates from the late eighteenth century, but the form is much older.

Biographers generally rely on a wide variety of documents and viewpoints; an autobiography may be based entirely on the writer's memory. A name for such a work in Antiquity was an apologia, essentially more self-justification than introspection. John Henry Newman's autobiography is his Apologia pro vita sua. Augustine applied the title Confessions to his autobiographical work (and Jean-Jacques Rousseau took up the same title). Probably the most famous German autobiography is still Goethe's Dichtung und Wahrheit.

The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin, the first secular biography published in the United States, served as a model for subsequent American autobiographies. African-American autobiography has developed from slave narratives. Frederick Douglass and W.E.B. DuBois both published autobiographies.

A memoir is slightly different from an autobiography. Traditionally, an autobiography focuses on the "life and times" of the character, while a memoir has a narrower, more intimate focus on his or her own memories, feelings and emotions. Memoirs have often been written by politicians or military leaders as a way to record and publish an account of their public exploits. In the eighteenth century, "scandalous memoirs" were written (mostly anonymously) by prostitutes or libertines: these were widely read in France for their juicy gossip. But memoir has another meaning too. The pagan rhetor Libanius framed his life memoir as one of his orations, not the public kind, but the literary kind that would be read aloud in the privacy of one's study. This kind of memoir refers to the idea in ancient Greece and Rome, that memoirs were like "memos," pieces of unfinished and unpublished writing which a writer might use as a memory aid to make a more finished document later on. In more recent times, memoirs are also life stories which can be about the writer and about another person at the same time.

Modern memoirs are often based on old diaries, letters, and photographs. Although the term "memoir" may have begun to replace "autobiography" in its popular usage, the former term applies to a work more restrictive in scope.

Until the last 20 years or so, few people without some degree of fame tried to write and publish a memoir. But with the critical and commercial success in the United States of such memoirs Angela's Ashes and The Color of Water more and more people have been encouraged to try their hand at this genre.

Paul Delaney has coined the term "ad hoc autobiography" to describe an autobiography motivated by the desire to exploit some temporary notoriety. Such autobiographies, often written by a ghostwriter, are routinely published on the lives of professional athletes and media celebritiesâand to a lesser extent about politicians. Some celebrities admit to not having read their "autobiographies."

Mark Twain was probably the first popular person to include photography in his autobiography. He was especially interested and involved on the taking of the pictures to control his photographic persona.

How close are they to blowing errrr I mean imploding the world up/down?

Answer
Good question!

On 26 April, the last superconducting magnet for the LHC was lowered into the accelerator tunnel.

According to an article which recently appeared concerning this event, it was noted that not many of the guests at the ceremony on 26 April would have been well-versed in the subtleties of the Welsh language, but they all intuitively understood the inscription on the banner draped across the top of the PM12 shaft. Since 7 March 2005, this well-known banner has borne the inscription 'Magned cyntaf yr LHC' (first magnet for the LHC), in honour of the LHC's (Welsh) Project Leader, Lyn Evans; now the inscription has been changed to 'Magned olaf yr LHC' (last magnet for the LHC). And so, on Thursday 26 April 2007, the last magnet, a 15-metre-long, 34-tonne superconducting dipole bearing the number 2401, was lowered into the LHC tunnel to the applause of the hundreds of guests attending this final lowering ceremony. The PM12 shaft was sunk for the express purpose of lowering these colossal superconductors into the tunnel and has seen 1232 dipoles pass its threshold over the last two years, 1746 magnets in total.

AT Department's Vacuum Group Leader Pierre Strubin, TS Department's Installation Coordination Group Leader Claude Hauviller, LHC Project Leader Lyn Evans, and CERN Director-General Robert Aymar, each took their turn at the microphone, underlining the vast quantities of components assembled, transported and installed over the past months. Before commencing their journey underground, the magnets were fitted with beam screens and underwent final tests and welds in the SM12 hall, which tops the PM12 shaft. '45 kilometres of beam screens and 65,000 components were processed in this building,' Pierre Strubin said. 'It was a real hive of activity, with 40 people going about their business from 7 in the morning until 8 in the evening.'

The lowering operation was a massive challenge also due to the quantity, size and fragility of the items to be transported, not to mention the very tight deadlines. 'The teams worked 24/7, installing up to 35 magnets per week, a feat which everybody, including me, considered impossible,' said Claude Hauviller. It took nearly 10,000 truck journeys to transport the magnets from the various locations where they were stored in France and Switzerland. Hauviller adds: 'some 40,000 km were travelled in total, roughly the circumference of the Earth - at 10 kilometres per hour!' Once underground, another 30,000 kilometres were travelled, at just 2 kph. All the speakers paid tribute to the commitment of the teams and the assistance provided by the local authorities in what was a truly Herculean task.

Magnet No. 2401 was duly slotted into its final position in the UJ22 cavern, where the TI2 transfer tunnel links up with the LHC.

A word from the DG: A new model for sharing knowledge

As we all know, a fundamental aim in scientific research is to publish the results with as wide a dissemination as possible. Researchers have access to the literature through libraries, but what happens when subscription fees for scientific journals increase year after year, way beyond inflation? Today we have reached a situation where groups of LHC physicists publish in journals they are unable to read from their home institutes. And, as you might have noticed, even the CERN Library struggles to maintain a coherent collection. This is of course not only in contradiction with the purpose of science; it also has important implications for issues such as education and technology transfer.

The European Commission has been aware of the problem for some time and is encouraging the various stakeholders in scientific publishing to experiment with new models for publication that may improve both access to and dissemination of scientific information. In this context, CERN has been a catalyst over the past two years among representatives of European funding agencies, librarians, laboratories and particle physics publishers in defining a new business model for scientific publishing which will offer free access for anyone to peer-reviewed articles via the Web. This model, currently collecting significant support, was presented at a meeting in Brussels to 500 delegates, representing researchers across all sciences, research administrators and publishers, and more recently last week to a meeting of representatives of particle physics funding agencies organised here at CERN.

This vision clearly goes beyond CERN. Reforming the publishing system requires the whole community at world level, in one discipline, to unite behind a new model. There are also reasons to believe that the vision might spread to other fields of physics and even into other disciplines. The strong Open Access statement that has been endorsed over recent weeks by the collaboration boards of ALICE, ATLAS, CMS, LHCb and TOTEM is of great importance. It demonstrates the commitment of the entire LHC community and we see that it is already influencing the publishing industry.

By proposing a new model for publishing we are challenging a 350 year old tradition, but as in many other domains, LHC physics requires new thinking. With this background and in the spirit of sharing knowledge, as in the development of the Web and now for the Grid, I strongly support the move towards a new publishing paradigm. Scientific publishing is changing and it is natural to me that LHC physics results should be published in a way that is accessible to everyone.

I have read a few articles, and I kind of remember back in high school in finance about the stock market but that was 6 years ago. How much should a novice start with? Please help

Answer
Star,
Start only with the money that, if you lost it all, would not change your lives or fill you with remorse. I'd suggest 5,000 if you are a regular middle class family. That's enough to take seriously but not enough to matter alot if you lost it. If you don't have 5k to lose, you probably should not be investing in stocks.

Read several books. I suggest "Beating the Street" by Peter Lynch. It's written for new investors. There's an outfit represented by something called "The Motley Fool" that's got several good books too. Bottom line - the time spent reading 4 or 5 good books on investing is money well spent. In fact, you could consider it as work - since the information you gain will be making you money later. Please don't skip this step.

Please follow these guidelines:

1. Don't use a full service broker. These are brokers that try to choose stocks for you. They make money when you buy and sell. The more you trade, the more they make. This is not beneficial to you, therefore, they have conflicting priorities to yours from the very start. They also charge significantly more. With 5,000 bucks, full service commissions would eat it up faster than profits. It's just not necessary. Go with someone like E-Trade. They're a legitimate discount broker and have been in business for many years. They aren't going anywhere.

2. Don't buy stocks you don't know anything about because your neighbors boss knows somebody with a hot tip. This is pure gambling and because hot tips usually also qualify for illegal insider trading, they are usually not true. Also, by the time a tip reaches anyone out of the boardroom, the stock price will have already reacted.

3. Do buy the stock of companies whose products you are familiar with after finding out if they are financially sound and growing. Watch your grocery buying. What new product is really cool? What new store is going up in your area? Sometimes these stocks can be very overpriced. Sometimes, you'll be the person that spotted a wal-mart all over northern Arkansas or Missouri in 1972. I have a friend whose mother was a home depot clerk in the early years. She bought stock out of her almost minimum wage job and retired a millionaire after 10 or so years of dramatic growth. Will this happen to you? Probably not. But it's nice to know that it can.

4. Watch a stock for a few months before buying any of it. Read all the news you can find on it. Yahoo! financials is a good place to start.

5. Don't place too much stock (ha ha) in the so called 'recommendations' of so called experts. Trust your instincts.

6. Never let the fear of paying taxes prevent you from selling a losing stock.

7. Remember: If you find something that stays fairly stable and doubles in 3 or 4 years, you've done very well. If you do this with your 5k, then, if you do it 9 more times, you will be a millionair. 5k x 2 = 10k. 10k x 2 = 20k. 20k x 2 = 40k. 40k x 2 = 80k. 80x2 =160. 160x2 = 320. 320x2 = 640. 640x2 = 1.28 mil. You'll always have capital gains taxes, but it's close to working out to a mil. The problem is, you'll want to spread yourself around some when you start making more money.

I strongly recommend that you join or start an investment club of like-minded individuals. Find people who are conservative and rational. You can share ideas and research. You can bounce your ideas off of each other and make sure your moves are not overly motivated by emotional reactions. Trying to invest in the space of your own mind, knowing that many experts can't be trusted, knowing that full service brokers can't be trusted, and knowing that some of the market is manipulated can be stressful and lonely. You need a support group.

Joe

Besides YouTube where can I see full movies and episodes

Answer
Hollywood Pocket

Hollywood Pocket doesnât have the biggest selection of films to choose from, but the video quality is excellent and itâs 100% legal since all of the films are public domain. Hollywood Pocket is one of the few legal sites that offers full length feature films for iPhone users.

Visit the site from your iPhone Safari browser, and you can choose from the list of categories: News, Action, Comedy, Science Fiction/Horror, Drama and Documentaries.

The films are in Quicktime format so you can pause, fast-forward and rewind as you watch.

So if youâre a Fred Astaire fan, or feel like watching a documentary about Marilyn Monroe, or the 1960s flick Horror Hotel, which has been compared to the cult classic, Psycho, head over to Hollywood Pocket and start watching.

B-Movies

B-Movies, a free app available in the iTunes App Store, is crammed with a huge variety of free, legal movies and shows to watch.

With a list of categories including Animation, Technology, Movies, Religion, Sports and Vlogs, there is something for everyone at B-Movies.

Each video is accompanied by a short synopsis, and a rating given by viewers.

You can find entire seasonsâ worth of some obscure older TV shows that might be of interest to watch just out of morbid curiosity, including an episode of Net Cafe, from the mid nineties about hackers.

The app allows you to bookmark your favourite videos, to search the collections for videos to watch, and to choose from Low, Medium and High Quality videos.

Joost

The free iPhone app Joost is another veritable goldmine for obscure films, documentaries and TV shows, with a huge variety from black and white Betty Boop cartoons to celebrity gossip, from Bridezilla episodes to extreme sports documentaries.

You can browse videos by category, browse all the popular videos, or the Joost picks. You can also search the Joost iPhone app for videos you want to watch.

Daily Motion

The video sharing website Daily Motion has an official app available in the iTunes App Store, making it easy to navigate through their videos.

Daily Motion is a great source for short films and documentaries. You can browse by category or by searching for the video you want to watch. Daily Motion also has integrated social media sharing, allowing you to share videos with your friends via email, Facebook and Twitter.

Signing up for a free account gives you the added ability to rate videos, to subscribe to channels and add videos to your favourites.

The three main categories on Joost are Film, Music and Shows, which are further divided into Action, Animation, Classics, Comedy, Horror and Independent â to name a few. The Film category is however limited to Clips, Trailers and Documentaries, whereas the videos available under Shows seem endless.

If none of these options appeal to you, there is one way to stream movies you already have on your computer, using Dropbox. Simply add the movie file to your Dropbox folder, and allow it to sync. Once the film has been uploaded to your Dropbox account, open up your Dropbox iPhone app [iTunes link] and navigate to the film, and youâll be watching it from anywhere in no time.

Videos played through the Dropbox iPhone app must be in .mov, .mp4 or .mv4 format.

Failing all else, videos on mobile-optimized TV channel websites like Comedy Central can be played on the iPhone, so while you canât watch an entire episode of a TV show, you can at least watch your favourite clips from shows like South Park or The Daily Show with John Stewart.

What apps or sites do you use to watch movies online on your iPhone? Let us know in the comments.

Answer
Go to the personal web pages of your favorite stars. Look for any upcoming appearances at a location near you.

Read gossip magazines and take note of restaurants, bars and clubs where celebrities flock. While most venues will be in major cities, stars who are filming on location often visit neighborhood eateries and night-life spots.

Read fan Internet blogs. These often provide information on when and where movies and television shows are filming.

You can send fan mail to the following address:

Ed Sheeran

driving from California to Washington in Winter?

I want to drive from Sacramento, California to Seattle, Washington around Christmas time/beginning of January. I will take highway 101 to travel. what sort of conditions can i expect in northern Oregon and Washington around that time of year? any advice and general information would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
I've made this trip many times because I live in Seattle area and have family in the LA area that I frequently visit at Christmas. Here are my tips:

HWY 101 is not the most direct route. Its a great option if you want to take in some scenery and don't mind spending more time on the road. If all you want is to get there & back as fast as possible, then take Interstate 5.

If you take HWY 101 you shouldn't have too much to worry about with regards to weather. The HWY follows the coast and is mostly at or near sea level. Snow & ice are possible, but not common. Expect wind and rain, but its unlikely that you'll see weather related delays.

If you change your mind and take I-5, make sure you are prepared for winter conditions. The entire stretch from Redding CA to Roseberg OR is mountain terrain and you could get snow anywhere within that area. The good news is that since its an Interstate the department of transportation is out in full force with plows, sand, salt etc to keep the road conditions manageable.

Regardless of which direction you go - I suggest you have your car inspected before the trip. Make sure your tires are in good condition. Get some snow chains and make sure they fit your car and you know how to install them. Bring extra coats, blankets and food just in case you get stranded in a cold car overnight.

Sacramento to Seattle can be done in one day if you start early, minimize breaks and drive late - only possible if you have multiple drivers and no young kids. Make sure you get an early start so you don't hit the mountains too late if you take I-5. Whatever you do - do NOT push yourself and drive tired. Allow enough time in your schedule to take breaks or even stop for the night at a hotel if necessary. If you take HWY 101 then forget about doing the drive in one day - plan on 2 full days, possibly 3.

first thing is...do you gamble every day playing...playing for fun or just to beat guys for drinks or 5 or 10 bucks a game is not on your way to becoming a pro...you should be able to play at a high level in a gambling game (for more than you make working)for hours and hours and for days on in...also to be a pro level player you have to quit your day job because I was once told 'if you keep a day job youre not playing to be a pro, youre just wishing you were with a safety blanket' this guys name is Jack Leavitt and his name was in a book on how to play pool, he was the guy steering my game years ago...he took me from room to room and also got me into playing smaller 'open' (which included players of all levels) and larger 'B' tournaments which is open to all those except known professionals or A players...the B tournaments I played in guys could run out run out run out play perfect safe, then run out run out run out...these guys had tough games of all kinds, one pocket, straight pool, nine ball, snooker and 3 cushion...most of the good B players had solid games in all those and would always figure out how to match up in one game or another...if you think youre ready to turn pro I suppose you gamble a lot of dough in a lot of different pool games every day...in the old days a good player would have someone steer him and do a tour ...usually of different states going from room to room looking for action...I ran into a young man in a San Jose bowling alley once, it was a long time ago and this young kid had a perfect stroke and a 80 dollar pair of new balance shoes on, unheard of in the 70s and early 80s...a year later I saw him in a pool room in Sacramento (jointed cue, terry stoners place) playing in a professionals tournament and my guy told me 'thats little Buddy (arvalos) he did his tour of the states at 16' he was just about to play Davenport who is well known throughout the states as a A level 9 ball pro...Davenport(dripping with gold and toting two fine women) tried to rattle young buddy by betting him for each game then also for the match...they finally agreed on a price...but the main thing was the tourney...buddy proceeded to play perfect nine ball running out running out and playing perfect safe then running out and running out (after which a disgusted Davenport tossed the dough on the table and walked away)...neither of them got to the finals of that particular tournament but there was action match ups with professional players all that week every night in the room...Ive seen guys who seemed like they didnt miss all night long and would ask Jack 'who is that' and he would say...hes nobody...after playing a few places in Calif, Nev, and Phoenix I realized that I kept my job for a reason...that I wasnt cut out for it, so 15 years of spending 5 hours a day or more in pool rooms playing different games and all I came up with is a 53 ball high run playing straight pool, and tons of pretty good pool room stories( and a nice collection of cues, which ive since traded in for golf clubs) ...but I do admire anyone who can make it playing pool because its not easy, and I have a small idea of what it takes to be good at pool games, and just as important ...the hustle...I believe you can find resources for tournaments and magazines by searching 'billiard news' there you will find tournaments and information...good luck pard, maybe one day Ill pick up a billiard news mag and see you in it...

What do Chinese Americans miss/longing most from their past/fond memories of China?

popular news in the 90s image
Q. What do you want to recollect or experience here in LA not as in history books, articles but in real hands on/physical/emotional experiences?
Do you know any stories of your parents, talk about their past, happy memories of their life in China?

I added two more questions. I need answers from anybody who can share their stories for my assignment. Thank you so much.

Answer
Well, by migrating to the west, we practically cut ourselves off from the happy memories of China.
Read the news, it's always something negative when they remember to report about China, so the media's propaganda pretty much washes off our happy memories about home.

I, for one part, miss the close relations with other people, when every close neighbour was trusted keys to our apartment. And in the early 90s when there was no air conditioning, the neighbors would bring their sheets to sleep on our floor because 1st floor is always cooler than the others. When someone was sick or got into trouble, the whole neighborhood, or colleagues at work gets mobilized, and help wherever they can. Now it's different, the fast economic development has broken this close tie between people.

Then collectivism, the protection the government provided to the people. During the 1998 flood, the young soldiers actually formed human dams to prevent the raging water from destroying our dis, they fought day and night, shouting slogans like "I live, the dam lives." Many drowned, some fell asleep on the sidewalk, it was a sight that would never be forgotten. You would say it non-human, but the fact that the military put the lives and properties of the civilians on top of their soilders makes the communist army a lot more popular among the population. The way the western government reacts to natural disasters is a shame compared to this.

With all the paid programming on cable TV and the lousy channels shouldn't cable be free?

sechott

I am so tired of flipping thru the channels on TV and finding nothing worth watching, I believe we as customers deserve better quality for the price we pay.

Answer
Well your quest is in vain for two reasons.

1) The money you are paying is for the service of broadcasting additional television stations to your house through a more sophisticated and decentralized network called cable, or a more scientific and highlypowered satelitte network. Both of which costed millions of dollars to impliment and create to provide those channels to you.

You are paying for programming that you will not watch, the advertisements there pay for it to not be $500 a month for you to use the service and pay off the cable companies installation.

2) The reason that there are so many advertisements is because the fact that the advertisers help contribute to the opperating costs of the cable people. for most shows, its a 43/17 split. Meaning that out of every hour of programming, 43 minutes is primary showing, and 17 minutes is going to be commercials and advertsements.

Solutions:

1) you could stop flipping channels like a person who grew up in the 90s, and you can use something called TV guide channel, or for dish network people, just hit your menu button and look up your local programming.

2) Stop whining about how much it costs and invest that money in internet service. That way you still get your moneys worth while you can browse television from things like Hulu and other programming sites. That way you can watch whatever you want to watch and not have to bother people like us with your innane questions and complain about how much you hate something you wont cut off yourself.

3) your least popular solution is to cut off your connection to the cable company alltogether and live off of Broadcast TV. This is unadvisable unless you watch primetime shows like NCIS, NCIS: LA, Glee, and other highty tighty teenage sex shows. This also gives you your local news.

So there are your solutons.

latest news video on north korea image

hello, sorry about sticking to this topic but I am very concern about this north Korea threat to the US and it's allies.

I already know that the north Korea missile may target three west cost land of the US, Alaska, Hawii, and California, which happen to be the state I live in.

My preior questions about "not the first part of this question" ------ http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AnqPAl5ZGPlRgyUMzExK3absy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20130315203743AAWxeB0

all the response state that it will take years for north korea to reach that kind of technologies but it's seem like they need.

I know that US had a missle of our own to defense from the north Korean Long-Range Missle but the thing is should be worry or scare? because I don't want to lose any sleep on this because that fan boy is activing stupid.

the news video that I been watching online state that 14 missle that going to built in Alaska will take 3 years or 2017? but why it's take that long... it might be too late or will the already missle that placed in Alaska, and 4 that in California will help in case.

Note : please answer the question with no joking or no dumb-ass remark.

and yes, I am worry about this since there are target the west cost of US, and if were California, how can California defense themselves.
thank, Sean but still....

if north Korean target California, who will help Calfiornia..... will Alaska help California if the long-range target California.

thank for your response.

Answer
Hi. You have absolutely nothing to worry about. Firstly, although North Korea has successfully tested two nuclear devices, these have been far too large and unsophisticated to be delivered by a missile. It will be some time before they manage to refine a bomb to the point where they can fire it any distance.

Secondly, they have only had one or two successful rocket launches. Before launching a rocket carrying a nuclear device, they would want to be 100% certain that it was not going to explode on take-off.

Finally, the USA has some of the best anti-missile defences in the world. Any missile from North Korea would be blasted out of the sky before it got half-way to the coast

What is the Demographic of the Hetalia fanbase?

Lyn Willow

I know a lot of hetalia fans in the USA, but exactly how big is the fanbase in total? It originated in Japan, so I assume there are a lot of fans there, but to what extent does it stretch to the rest of the world? Since it is mostly an internet thing, it's probably gone global. I know without asking that the female ratio is a whole lot larger than the male portion, but exactly how much so? if anyone could provide some actual statistics, or perhaps a graph, I would be much obliged. <3

Answer
Well, I know it's known in Korea. They were pretty pissed off about the character South Korea. Seriously, it even made the news. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGzT1eUoC6Y&feature=related

If any country were to get pissed off over Hetalia, you'd think it'd be Italy...

Other than that, the best I think I can give you is a link to this site: http://sites.google.com/site/hetaliaindexes/

It's really popular for people who want to read the web comics. It has a flag counter on the side of the home page. It shows how many people from certain countries have visited the site. Hopefully that should help to give you an idea. :)

More and More I find Fox News reporting things that are not true?

Angel Eyes

My husband has to watch Fox News after the national nightly news. The show is filled with all the bells and whistles and I tolerate it, because I like Shepard Smith. But, while my husband is sleeping I gather most of the news from more valid sites on the internet. And, they often tell a different story than I heard listening to their news that night. So, I'm beginning to think that Fox either doesn't report the news right or chooses not to.

How do others feel about this ?

Answer
Good for you. Keep it up.

You were right to guess that Fox chooses NOT to report the news straight. They are on a mission, and their goal is to sell you a political philosophy, not give you the news. In fact, if somebody on Fox says something, believe the opposite. Shep Smith is OK but the rest are frauds.

The only goal of news should be to inform. Fox's political philosophy appeals to people who find the news on other networks hard to understand. They need simple answers. They like to watch people yell at each other. Fox shows are popular, but, fortunately, really not as popular as you might think. About 3 million to 3.5 million people watch Bill O'Reilly and Glenn Beck every night, but about 6 million watch the CBS Evening News, 8 million watch ABC's World News, and about 9 to 9.5 million watch the news on NBC with Brian Williams.

The most consistently popular websites for news are CNN at 32 (27 million unique visits) and The New York Times at 50 (17 million).

For April 2010, the numbers changed a little, not much. The most popular News websites were, in order:

1. CNN (approx. 48 million.)
2. MSNBC
3. New York Times
4. Huffington Post
5. Fox News (approx. 23.5 million)
6. Washington Post (22 million)
7. Los Angeles Times
8. Reuters
9. ABC News
10. USA Today

I know this is more information than you asked for, but I hope it helped you.
