What's your opinion on Relapse?

[HS]

only to ppl who heard the leak
no bullshit answers

Answer
I think it a solid album, but I have a lot of issues with it.

- The production is good, but not up to the typical Dr. Dre level.
- Why does Eminem have a fake Jamaican accent?
- A lot of the topics are too time specific, and the things that are time specific aren't memorable enough to hold their relevance for more than a year or two.
- It contains too much celebrity gossip (that's just an issue I have with Eminem in general) . Hip hop's target audience isn't 40 year old house wives and 15 year old white girls. I understand that his appeal to white teenagers is the primary reason he's been so successful, but that decreases his value as a hip hop artist.
- It lacks the moments of seriousness that his previous albums contained that created a balance.

Other than that it's on point lyrically and the production passes, so I can't knock it too much.

Does anyone watch BBC news?

The King

How do you feels about the accuracy of their news compared to American or Canadian news? Particularily their views on North America should strengthen their economy? (they say americans should become more thrifty and save more)
@ Jack T:

Actually I'm Canadian and I'm getting tired of how even the media in my own country is starting to sensationalize the news!

PS way to continue the American stereotype "If it wasn't for us you'd be speaking German" ...you knob

Answer
Yes... but BBC world news, cos I live in Germany.
I also watch the local German news channels, and then I have a choice of the world channels CNN and CNBC from America, plus France 24, Russia Today, and Al Jazeera International, plus the German world channels N24 and n-tv.
My favorite, surprisingly, is Al Jazeera, because it is just that little bit better than the rest.
It's unbiased reporting is excellent ! And it has outstanding coverage of worldwide events.

Jack T...You ask if Warren is a kid ? Well your comments prove that you act like one.

You remember that America only joined the war after Pearl Harbour, when you at last realised the threat facing you. But we had been at war against this threat for many years, while you were prepared to sit back and profit by supplying us weapons on "lend lease basis" (that we were still paying back 40 years later).
Just like every other war you have fought in the last 100 years, you prefer to fight on other peoples soil !

This is OK by me, quite clever in fact, but don't play the big hero world saviour. You were just one of thirty five countries fighting the Nazis, and many of those that fought were Muslim !
I sincerely thank you, and all those other lands, for taking part, and risking their lives for OUR combined future..
And having so many people of the Muslim faith in our country shows how much tolerance we have achieved.
How cosmopolitan our land has become. We are blessed with the experiences from so many cultures worldwide. Practically all of the Countries that were once a part of our "Empire" are good friends of ours still, the Commonwealth is a splendid example of this friendship.

The coloured members of our community have ALWAYS had the same civil rights as us, including the same voting rights. I admit that legislation had to be introduced to protect coloured peoples employment rights, such was the underlying racism in the middle of the last century.
We have changed so much since then.

This is down to our freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and freedom in our media.
And our belief in justice.

And I for one am quite happy that the pound is worth less, because I live in Germany, so when I go back to England, it is so cheap there for me !

Should Shirley Sherrod sue Fox news for defamation of character?

gws35pinhe

CNN has been airing the unedited version of her NAACP speech. I think she has a valid case to take them to court. They have a constitutional right to lie, but she has constitutional rights too.
I don't care who broke the story. They aired it and it was deliberately edited to deceive people.
Armchair Goddess#1, I've already decided to give best answer to you. As soon as Yahoo allows it I will choose yours.

Answer
She most certainly should! Faux News deliberately distorted Ms. Sherrod's message from more than 24 years ago---and that on-purpose distortion should COST THEM! The latest CHUTZPAH of this non-news Faux station is to now accuse the Obama administration of "railroading" Shirley Sherrod by firing her! Can you believe these monsters? The unmitigated GALL from the station that actually sued for the right to lie in a Florida court! Maybe if ACORN and Ms. Sherrod and all the others who have been the targets of the Faux maliciousness DID sue, we could sent a message LOUD AND CLEAR to media mogul Rupert Murdoch that we are all "Mad as hell and we won't TAKE it anymore" on the whole issue of propaganda!

I did put my two cents in at the White House, advocating immediate reinstatement and then suggested using this as a golden opportunity to bring the whole issue of prejudice or bias out into the open---debate the rush to judgement for both ACORN (which was ABSOLVED of wrongdoing eventually, but not before being put to shame unfairly and damaging an otherwise hard-won good reputation) and for USDA worker Shirley Sherrod, who was attempting to say that the tendency all people have to make negative judgements about others based solely on race or skin color can be OVERCOME (as she was able to do in time to help the white farmer of whom she spoke and the farmer's wife SAVE THEIR FARM---a fact to which they testified on CNN several times today. I think this could be a perfect chance to get Faux news hoisted on its own petard and wean some of its regular viewers off it its negative messages, if the Obama team handles the whole thing with aplomb.

Why do some people actually defend Perez Hilton?

goodbye go

I use to go to his site all the time, even though I really did not like him very much. But, I could never find another gossip site that was any better. Till I finally found Oh No They Didn't. Now, I don't go to his site anymore.
But, I remember when I did, I would go through the comments, which by the way he does not get very much anymore. Nothing compared to the comments ONTD gets. I would tend to notice that the majority of people on that site would hate on him and call him names, rightfully so, because I mean he is just as mean and vile as they are. I personally never left any mean comments. But, I didn't mind other people doing it either. I feel like someone had to tell this guy off. Luckily, it was more than just a some one, it was a lot of people. Still, even then, there would be that one person that would come to his defense. They would be like, "Oh, Well if you don't like Perez so much, why come to his site?" Yeah, well if Perez Hilton didn't like the certain celebrities he chose to pick on, then why post stuff about them? Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but please don't pretend that this guy is anything more than he is. He deserves to be made fun of. I feel it is justified. That's like saying a killer doesn't deserve jail. I know that's a bit of an extreme analogy but it fits perfectly. You can't expect to be mean and an asshole to people who did nothing personally to you and expect other to take your feelings into consideration.

Does anyone else feel this way? Be a good person and you should have nothing to worry about. It has nothing to do with his sexuality but of course someone is going to use that against him because there gonna look for something to make fun of him with. Do I think that's right to make of somebody for that reason? No. A good person doesn't deserve that but a bad person does. Oh and I also got sick of his constant Lady Gaga campaign. He was the reason I began to dislike her.
I look at it this way, If you try to go through life treating everyone with as much respect as you can and there are people that still make fun of you. Than that is where it isn't right at all. You should never make fun of someone or treat someone like sh*t because of things like their appearance or mannerisms, but, well, I'm sure that isn't why these people are doing it to him. Just a guess ;)
Mommy of 2- Gee, what are you the mommy of? Two demons? You are such a hateful bitch. Don't bring sexuality into this matter. It is such a cop out. Especially when you are using it to refer to all homosexuals. I hope one of your kids turns gay! Dumb bitch, OH and I have the right to call you that, since you're such a fucked up person!

Answer
It seems to me like, if you're gay, incredibly ignorant, annoying, a criminal, or loud enough, you're instantly a celebrity. We live in an age where people like Perez Hilton, Octomom, Kate Gosselin, Snooki, and Spencer Pratt, are somehow allowed to be famous. What happened to the days where people would actually have to do something important to become famous?

How do you feel about this?

hahaha

Awhile ago, i saw on the internet that Jon Gosselin has a new GF (teacher) and they were spotted in France. On the other hand Kate Gosselin is accused of having a relationship with her bodyguard. And last last week Jon and Kate announced that they are getting a divorce. The question is how will this affect the kids? I really feel bad for them. I also heard news that while Kate was vacationing with the twins and sextuplets including the bodyguard and including the camera crew , witnesses said that Kate was COMPLETELY ignoring the kids!! The only time she was paying attention to the kids is when they're filming!! Seriously, Kate's not the same anymore and so is Jon. I used to find their old episodes cool but since season 5 I find the show a bit boring. What are your thoughts about this?

Answer
everyday I pray that they are all on a bus together along with the stupid kids from twilight, brangelina and jennifer aniston, the kardashians, britney spears, paris hilton, and lindsay lohan, and this bus drives off a cliff onto jagged rocks in a cyber shark infested water cove. The sharks are also poisonous and there is no escape. Not because I hate them or anything, but JESUS CHRIST I am sick and fucking tired of seeing stupid headlines of STAR and Gossip News such as: OMFG JON AND KATE AREN'T TOGETHER FIVE MINUTES SO THEY MUST BE HAVING AN AFFAIR.

TWILIGHT KIDS KISSED ON SCREEN THEN OFF SCREEN AND WE THINK THEY ARE TOGETHER BUT THEY SAY THEY ARENT THEN WE CATCH THEM AND THEY ADMIT THEY ARE BUT THEN THEY BROKE UP.

Holy shit people, deal with your own lives and quit worrying about these so called "celebrities"

That is how I feel about it.

Missing Ohio Family -- Very Disturbing...What's the latest news?

Cathy

I am so tired of hearing about all the sick-o's causing harm to women and children....and this story about the 4 missing Ohio family member (well, one's just a family friend) is very disturbing to me. They found the 13 year old girl alive, bound/gagged in the guys basement.

Any good news if they've found the mom, son, and family friend???? Please I hope so.

Answer
Yes I have see that story on the news and on Jane Valez mitchell HLN tv its horrible. I think the three people are dead the girl thank god was saved the guy (creep) that was arrested is refusing to talk , neighbours say he was really weird he use to kill squirrels and eat them, he has a criminal record also he set an apartment bloc on fire and went to jail for that , that poor young girl must have gone threw hell with this psychopath , now she may be able to help police put a good case together against this monster, now we just have to wait till they find the other 3 people and it doesn't look good!

Can fiction really be more weird than reality?

http://lancasteronline.com/article/local/844375_Brenda-Heist-found-living-with-homeless-in-Florida-after-vanishing-11-years-ago-from-Lititz.html and then less than a week later http://news.yahoo.com/frantic-911-call-leads-3-missing-women-ohio-084650558.html another decade old mystery is solved. Do these come in threes too?
For those with an aversion to links they describe 2 women that were abducted and found yesterday and then a woman disappeared for 11 years call police and tells them she is tired of running. She dropped her kids off at school and comes back over a decade later. I mean these two stories so close together is odd enough but their content is even stranger.
3 women/

Answer
These stories deal with human beings. This isn't fiction. Actually, it isn't even reality. Where human beings are involved, the end results are often---unreal.

How was Bill Oreilly able to get his own talk show on fox news? Was he a journalist before doing commentary?

Joey Bee

Answer
O'Reilly does have a background in local television news and tabloid TV. I would call him a commentator more than a journalist, as he is inclined to editorializes on the news more than break it.

Here's a bit of his professional biography from wikipedia:

After graduating from Marist, Bill O'Reilly moved to Miami, Florida, where he taught English and history at a Jesuit high school for two years. After leaving Miami, O'Reilly returned to school, earning a Masters in Broadcast Journalism from Boston University in 1976. While attending BU, he was a reporter and columnist for various local newspapers and alternative news weeklies, including the Boston Phoenix. O'Reilly did his broadcast journalism internship in Miami during this time, and was also an entertainment writer and movie reviewer for the Miami Herald.

O'Reilly's early television news career included reporting and anchoring positions at WNEP-TV in Scranton, Pennsylvania, where he also reported the weather. At WFAA-TV in Dallas, Texas, O'Reilly was awarded the Dallas Press Club Award for excellence in investigative reporting. Then it was off to KMGH-TV in Denver, Colorado where he won an Emmy for his coverage of a skyjacking. O'Reilly also worked in Portland, Oregon, Hartford, Connecticut, and Boston. [5] In 1980, he anchored his own program on WCBS-TV in New York where he won his second Emmy for an investigation of corrupt city marshals. He was promoted to the network as a CBS News correspondent and covered the wars in the Falkland Islands and El Salvador from his base in Buenos Aires, Argentina (1982). In 1986, O'Reilly joined ABC News as a correspondent on ABC World News Tonight. In three years, he appeared on the show over one hundred times, receiving two National Headliner Awards for excellence in reporting.

In 1989, O'Reilly joined the nationally syndicated Inside Edition, a current affairs television program (called "infotainment" by critics). He started as senior correspondent and backup anchor for British journalist David Frost, but soon took over the anchor chair when the viewers found him more appealing. In addition to being one of the first broadcasters to cover the dismantling of the Berlin Wall, O'Reilly also obtained the first exclusive interview with murderer Joel Steinberg and was the first national anchor on the scene of the 1992 Los Angeles riots.

In 1995, O'Reilly left Inside Edition to enroll at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, where he received a Master's Degree in Public Administration. Upon leaving Harvard, Roger Ailes, chairman and CEO of the then startup FOX News Channel, hired O'Reilly to anchor The O'Reilly Report, which aired weeknights. The nascent channel's most popular show was renamed to The O'Reilly Factor when it moved to a later time slot in 1998 since the host was the main "factor" of the show.

What color is love?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWX7rBV4Yx4

Answer
This is a very interesting question. I think that music has always been a reflection of society. These days people seem to want to use their words. Not much is left open to interpretation today. Everything is said out loud. The newest technologies are all about words. We talk constantly on our cell phones. We tweet every little detail of our lives. News commentators talk to us all day every day. It's all about the words. Probably one day, people will start getting tired of all the chatter and start to appreciate the relaxation and imagination that instrumental music has to offer, but for now, I think people will just keep on tweeting until they run out of stuff to say.

CELEBRITY GOSSIP!!!!!?

[=

has anyone heard of this celebrity named louvie mooreland she is a model and actress and really cool!

Answer
Celebrity gossip is for people who need lobotomies. Kill yourself if you feel the need to know the personal details of the lives of people you'll never meet.

Why do people care so much about celebrity gossip?

talk_to_cy

Answer
I think celebrity gossip started out as a fun diversion for some people, years ago when gossip columns were buried in the back pages of newspapers and magazines. However, today, the media forces it upon us so often that many people have become brainwashed into believing its important. The media places the same importance on celebrity news as it does on actual news about world events, etc.

Edit: The person above me is a perfect example of why celebrity news is harmful to society. For many it becomes an obsession and the ultimate result is a dumbed-down, uninformed population. Now you know why people barely know how their own government works, but can name every love interest for their favorite celeb.

When are the shows 'Cane' and 'Dog the Bounty Hunter' coming back on?

jackiem21_

Cane stopped coming on because of the writers protest, but since the protest has been over for quite awhile i thought by now it should already be on. Dog the Bounty Hunter was cancelled because of his racial remark towards his sons wife or girlfriend and was sort of cancelled but i heard it is supposed to come back on soon; but I'm not sure when.
Thanks for the help!

Answer
I don't know if it is "official" official, but pretty much Cane is canceled.
http://www.usatoday.com/life/television/news/2008-02-10-show-return-side_N.htm

It is still on the futon critic's "hiatus" list rather than "canceled" list, so there is still a little hope, I suppose.
http://www.thefutoncritic.com/showatch.aspx?series=&network=&daycode=&statuscode=2&genre=&studio=

If by some miracle it does return, it won't be back until Fall, or more likely mid-season.

As for Dog the Bounty Hunter, the latest news (as of early March) that I have heard is that A&E ordered a full 30 episode season which is in production, but that no official air date had been set yet.

PS3:PSN is DOwn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?

Hey guys. My PSN network is down. Now I was wondering that if I save data when the PSN is down, does it affect my gameplay in the future?
I just manually changed the date on my Ps3 and saved some data but then delented the saved data. Is that going to be a problem?

Answer
My best advice was don't use your PS3 especially when you have an older / fat model until the error was fully fixed.

Because it could caused error to some PS3 functionality especially when obtaining a trophy & possibility of failing to restore certain data.

As of now, according to Sony, only the Slim newer models ( 120, 250 GB) were not affected & are connecting normally to PlayStation Network.

Here are the links of the articles that i found in regarding to the error:

Teens, do you care about celebrities?

Charlotte

Like do you buy all the latest gossip magazines and are obssessed with them?

Answer
I like some celebrities but I don't think of them as anything else but people. I don't see why so many celebrities get treated like their a different species, a more privileged, better kind then any other human being. I find it pretty sick and how much the media makes girls go crazy about their weight. Disgusting.

So overall, I don't really see the thrill of celebrities like I used to when I was younger. I've grown smarter about them :-)

3 And I am not just saying that because I discovered it over 40 years ago. Also, here are a couple of newspaper articles that agree with me and 8 million other Jehovah's Witnesses.

Most churches participation is down.
http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/news/religion/2011-02-16-church_growth_15_ST_N.htm
notice the last paragraph of the article;
âJehovah's Witnesses experienced the greatest growth percentage overall, gaining 4.37% according to the yearbook. Several historically black denominations continued a years-long practice of not submitting fresh figures.â

One more reason why I picked #3. I have been a professional photographer and journalist for over 60 years and I have worked in most of the religious institutions mentioned in question. I once was sent to photograph Billy Graham and I started learning with that assignment what those religious leaders are REALLY like. I have shot many Catholic weddings where the priest was drunk on the church wine.

If earth got it's water from millions of asteroids bombarding it why didn't this happen with other planets?

Sherry Miz

That seems to be the current theory but how did other planets that we know of escape this?

Answer
Hi ya Sherry!

Science.NASA.gov ⺠... ⺠Science@NASA Headline News
Apr 6, 2011 â ..............Some researchers,,,,,,,, believe,,,,,,,,,, there's water on The Moon

**
During the flyby of the Cassini spacecraft at a distance of 2,068 kilometers (1,285 miles). This was more than 1000 times closer than Voyager 2.

The Cassini findings ......suggest..... that Phoebe may be a frozen artifact of a bygone era, some four billion years ago. It is ........likely....... a primordial mixture of ice, rock and carbon-containing compounds similar in many ways to material seen in Pluto and Neptune's moon Triton. Scientists ........believe...... bodies like Phoebe were plentiful in the outer reaches of the solar system about four and a half billion years ago.

**
Together, these discoveries bring planetary scientists closer to understanding what happened to the water on Venus, which is ......suspected to have .......once been as abundant as on Earth.

To be certain that the hydrogen is coming from water, Delva and colleagues must also detect the loss of oxygen atoms on the day-side and verify that there are approximately half as many leaving Venus as hydrogen.

So far, this ...........has not been possible............. âI keep looking at the magnetometer data but so far I canât see the signature of oxygen escaping on the day-side,â says Delva.

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/12/081218094605.htm

Venus is a burning-desert world hidden under bitter clouds of sulfuric acid and carbon dioxide. It may once have been awash with oceans of near-boiling water.

http://www.spacetoday.org/SolSys/Venus/VenusPlanet.html

**
Scientists were surprised to find only trace amounts of water on Jupiter. After all, they had reasoned that Jupiter should have more oxygen than the Sun. The oxygen would have combined with the more than abundant hydrogen in the Jovian atmosphere, thus making water a significant component. The trouble is that the Galileo space craft found that Jupiterâs atmosphere contains less oxygen than the Sun; therefore, water is a minor trace element in the atmosphere.

Jupiter moon Europa is the most important source of water in the system. Europa.....
....is thought to have....
an iron core, a rocky mantle and a surface ocean of salty water.

http://www.universetoday.com/15148/is-there-water-on-jupiter/

The most detailed analysis ever of light from the atmospheres of planets outside our solar system has turned up no evidence of water but possible hints of clouds, scientists said today.

"We're getting our first sniffs of air from an alien world," said David Charbonneau of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. "And what we found surprised us. Or more accurately, what we didn't find surprised us."

http://www.space.com/3490-clouds-water-detected-distant-planet.html

**
After Earth, Mars is the planet with the most hospitable climate in the solar system. So hospitable that it..... may once have...... harbored primitive, bacteria-like life.

Some scientists identified features which they...... believe...... appear...... to be carved by torrents of water with the force of 10,000 Mississippi Rivers.

There is no general agreement, however, on what form water took on the early Mars. Two competing views are currently popular in the science community. According to one theory, Mars was once much warmer and wetter, with a thicker atmosphere; it .......may well have...... boasted lakes or oceans, rivers and rain. According to the other theory, Mars was always cold, but water trapped as underground ice was periodically released when heating caused ice to melt and gush forth onto the surface.

In either case, the question of what happened to the water remains a mystery.Edit:If in fact there was water.

http://mars.jpl.nasa.gov/msp98/why.html

**
Methane gas on Neptune gives the planet its blue color because the gas absorbs red light and reflects the blue back into space.
The space probe that examined Neptune was Voyager 2, with the encounter in 1989.
That's it. One probe twenty years ago. The closest point was about 5000 km from Neptune's north pole, and was moving at about 85000 km/h relative to the planet.

Well....I could go on. It is just like the evolution theories. In every instance when water H2O is mentioned ( I spaced the areas with dots on either side as seen above.) there is probables... maybes.... perhaps ..could be...suggests that..looks like...were not sure...!

Empirical science is wonderful for it shows creation. It does not guess as to the how but instead gives evidence why it works.

Thanks fer ask~n~Sherry!

Why is Winchester Firearms closing if they are such a popular gun making company?

cheeeee

Answer
Here is a recent article that fully answers your question.

____________________________________________________________

TITLE:Winchester Aims To Close A Factory, End An Era.

SOURCE: Knight-Ridder Tribune Business News, January 18, 2006

TEXT:
"Jan. 18--The maker of the "gun that won the West" may not have a future in the East.

U.S. Repeating Arms Co. said Tuesday that it plans to close the New Haven plant where it manufactures Winchester rifles and shotguns, potentially ending Connecticut's 140-year history of producing the firearms brand.

Falling demand for the guns, which are used for hunting and target shooting, means the company will cease production and operations at its New Haven plant on March 31, facility manager Paul DeMennato said.

The plant employs about 200 people, including about 150 members of the International Association of Machinists, all of whom would lose their jobs.

DeMennato said the company is in "very preliminary negotiations" with potential buyers for the plant, but said he could offer no further details about who is interested or how likely it is that a sale will be completed.

Founded in 1866 as the Winchester Repeating Arms Co., the gunmaker quickly won fame for its rugged and reliable weapons. Among them was the Winchester '73 rifle, commonly referred to as the "gun that won the West," a phrase sometimes also applied to the Colt revolver.

The Winchester rifle figured prominently in Hollywood depictions of the Old West. John Wayne often carried a Winchester, as did the character Lucas McCain in the TV series "The Rifleman," which ran from 1958 to 1963.

But more recently, the company, now known as U.S. Repeating Arms and owned by the Belgian firm Herstal Group, has faced a variety of financial difficulties stemming from declining sales.

Since the late 1980s, employment has shrunk from about 1,800 workers to the current 200. Last March, the company negotiated a contract with unionized machinists that was aimed at preserving jobs and helping the company reach profitability.

But the market for rifles and shotguns has continued to erode, DeMennato said. The company is selling only about one-third as many guns as it did just three years ago, he said, although he declined to cite exact sales figures.

"The number of units required by the market has decreased to the point where it's no longer profitable for us to stay in business," he said.

He said the problem was an overall decline in the market for rifles and shotguns made by the New Haven plant, not a loss of market share for the Winchester brand in general. The New Haven plant does not make handguns or firearms for military use, he said.

Winchester guns that would be discontinued if the New Haven plant closes include the Model 70, Model 94 and the Model 1300. Guns bearing the Winchester brand name will continue to be made at plants in Portugal, Belgium and Japan, a company spokesman said.

The Herstal Group, which owns U.S. Repeating Arms, also owns the well-known Browning firearms company.

New Haven Mayor John DeStefano Jr. said that the New Haven plant has a manufacturing capacity of 300,000 firearms a year, but that production had fallen to 80,000 units by the end of 2005.

In a statement issued Tuesday, he said he hoped that a deal could be reached to both preserve jobs and maintain the city's legacy as the leading producer of Winchester firearms.

"The rifle's going to get made somewhere by somebody. The broader impact here for New Haven and Connecticut is frankly not the taxes, but the idea that this gun won the West and is part of our heritage," he said.

Over the past 20 years, the plant has received more than $17 million in incentives, $33 million in loans and $2.7 million in tax abatements to keep operating in New Haven.

Under a 1993 tax abatement deal, the company promised to employ at least 400 workers at the plant. But it renegotiated the agreement in 2001 because of a downturn in the firearms market.

Meanwhile, in return for a $4.7 million grant from the state, the company agreed to remain in New Haven through 2003. With that agreement behind it and all its economic assistance loans repaid, it is no longer encumbered by financial ties to the city or state.

Leaders of the machinists union said they were disappointed by word of the plant's closing.

"We did negotiate a contract last year and we did make some concessions that we hoped would alleviate this," said Everett Corey, directing business representative for Machinists' District 26.

Wages for union workers at the plant range from $13 to $26 an hour, with the average being $16 an hour, he said.

Workers were not surprised by the news. "It's a sad thing for us," said Bobby Brown, 59, a machinist who has worked at the plant for 40 years. "All of us are out of a job and most of us are around my age."

Union leaders said they remain hopeful that a buyer can be found to operate the plant. "We'll explore everything we can to try to keep the jobs," Corey said.

One complication could be the status of the Winchester brand name, which U.S. Repeating Arms uses under license from the owner, Olin Corp., the maker of Winchester ammunition. The licensing deal for the Winchester name expires at the end of next year. Representatives of Olin Corp. could not be reached for comment.

Lawrence Keane, spokesman for the Newtown-based National Shooting Sports Foundation, said he was saddened to hear that the production of Winchesters in Connecticut may end.

He said Winchester guns, such as the famed, lever-action Model 94 rifle, remain immensely popular among shooters and hunters. Winchester, with its relatively modest prices, "is certainly not a Parker [shotgun] or a Weatherby [rifle]," but some of the classic guns are still prized among collectors, he said.

Keane noted that Connecticut still has active firearms manufacturers: Colt's in Hartford; Sturm, Ruger & Co. in Fairfield; Marlin in North Haven; and O.F. Mossberg & Sons in North Haven.

Galen O'Bryant, owner of the Trader's Guns shop in East Windsor, said some Winchesters hold their own against even the fancier makes and among collectors can command prices in the tens of thousands of dollars.

"The Model 70 [bolt-action rifle] was the rifleman's rifle," he said. "It comes in every caliber you can think of."

He said the Model 12 slide-action shotgun, made through 1980, was a mainstay of hunters throughout the 20th century."
