Sweet n So
There's recent news about Turkey's revived close relationship with Iran so I was wondering if they have any cultural similarities such as religion.
Answer
Yes, Iran and Turkey have a Muslim majority, at least a majority that is muslim in name. Iranian Muslims are mostly Shi and Turkish Muslims are mostly Sunni. Both have Jewish and Christian minorities.
The history of the two countries actually goes back many thousands of years. The Turks in Turkey are descended from Ancient Greeks, ancient Iranians, Hittites, and of course, the Turkish invaders that arrived there in the Middle Ages. The Iranians are descended from ancient indo-european tribes that migrated to the Middle East many thousands of years ago from southern Russia(there were no Russians there back then) and Central Asia.
The Turks formed the Ottoman Empire and the Iranians, the Iranian Empire(known as the Persian Empire in the west). It should be noted that the Persian Empire was revived after Alexander and though it collapsed several times, it always restored itself and continued well into the 18th century.
The Ottoman Empire(established in the late Middle Ages) fought with the Persian Empire for 3 centuries though neither side could defeat the other. The last major battle ended in victory for the Persians but the Persian Empire collapsed some time after since the last emperor was killed.
Turks today have certain traditions borrowed from the Iranians and are similar to the Iranians in the area of culture because of this.

Answer
I have read the news about it, unfortunately it is true, they are trying hard to minimize or if they can destroy the evidence of thousands of years of presence of Armenian people in their homeland Armenia.
They will do anything, the churches in the first place, but world is watching them now, they were not successful enough in last 92 years, the land is full of Armenian historical sites.
Here is the latest news about Surb Khach church:
Already on March 2 Minister of Culture and Tourism of Turkey Atilla Koc stated that a cross shall be certainly placed on eth dome of the Surb Khach church of Akhtamar if it originally had one. Nevertheless he submitted patriarch Mesrob II Mutafian's request to restore the cross and allow yearly religious celebrations at Surb Khach to the Foreign Ministry.
On April 11 "Miliet " newspaper expressed negative opinion about the placement of a cross on the dome of Surb Khach. The article was represented to the Culture Ministry and the Department of Historical Memorials and Museums of Turkey.
According to "Milliet", the Foreign Ministry of Turkey says that "Aya Sofia" temple ios also turned into a museum and neither Christian or Muslim holy services are held there. The Ministy states that the same status is given to the Surb Khach church. Therefore placing a cross on its dome is unreasonable.
