How did our culture become so celebrity obsessed?

celebrity gossip lindsay lohan
on Lindsay Lohan cries in court when she hears her sentence
celebrity gossip lindsay lohan image

It's gotten out out of hand. Do you see all the gossip magazines that are on the stands? All the gossip websites...VH1 used to be a music channel, now they show videos at 2 in the morning and the rest of the time it's a celebrity worshipping channel. I mean, who the hell cares what Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan are up to in their private time?

Answer
celebrities are evolving into the American monarchy.

Did people not criticize celebrities much until roughly 2002?

I think over recent years we've started hating on celebrities more than we used to. I'm not sure though because I'm not very old. Did we chirp celebs all the time like we kind of do now back in say, 1995? I know Madonna did all kinds of crazy stuff in the 80s, but I wonder if people saw her like we see Lindsay Lohan now? But the bad press of celebrities tends to be forgotten over time, so maybe that's why.

Answer
There has been bad press and celebrity criticizing and gossip since the 1920's silent film stars

It's nothing new at all - it's just that media communication is more easily available and widespread so rumors get started and spread more quickly

What sort of people read them? Who reads those magazines at the grocery store checkout counter that have stories that are obviously made up? Have you seen any of those headlines that are so stupid it is funny?

Answer
Ya i know they are all so fake, but people including me like to read them just out of curiosity. Thats how the people who make these stories make a living. So i would say a curious person reads these, or a person who is oblivious to the fact that THESE STORIES ARE FAKE, and another thing i have noticed is sometimes they have a cover storie on the front like i saw one that said rob patinson and kristen stewart (sorry if i spelled their name wrong) are getting married but on the inside it says that rob only says that as an icebreaker so they just lure you in to buying things that arent a big deal, so ya i hope that answers your question

Why do girls love to talk about themselves?

destinyx

It's the number one thing they are good at. It amazes me at how much calories women can burn by talking incessantly about themselves. I have talked to so many girls that I eventually developed a "Tune Out" or "Tune In" mechanism. I can't have an intelligent conversation with any of them. They get bored with topics such as religion, business, politics, but not celebrities, gossips, and weddings.

This is the majority of women.

Answer
Because they don't get enough compliments from guys. It's their way of placating themselves, make themselves feel better about who they think they are.

Believe me, there are intelligent women out there. You might be pleasantly surprised. Just don't settle for less than you desire in all facets of a woman when you are looking for one to pick to stay with. A good body and a pretty face don't go too far and from that, it is easy to stray. A well educated woman who is patient, kind, loving, funny, and intelligent can reflect back to you who you really are.

Don't give up...

If you hang out at a university for law students, medicine, psychology, or art, you might get lucky faster. Nothing wrong with a good educated man either. Well educated, intelligent women appreciate them too.

What should I wear to my boyfriend's birthday at a bar?

My boyfriend's birthday celebration will be at a bar. I've never been to a bar. So, I'm sure of what I should wear. I want to look sexy that's something I have in mind. I was thinking a skirt and a blouse but maybe that's too serious for a bar?
if it helps physical appearance
I'm tan
5'5
thin(not super skinny)
brown eyes
please if you have any pictures or links I will really appreciate it. Thank you in advance :)

Answer
I say let your hair down and have it loose, tousled, wavy, that's sexy for a bar.
Wear some shiny lipgloss, pink looks hot on tanned skin.
Go for a casual yet sexy look.
Either go for showing your legs, or showing some cleavage and your arms, only pick one of the two as showing both may appear trashy. You can still show your arms just not a lot of cleavage haha.

I would choose the skirt, you can dress it up to be sexy and casual and seeing as it is the winter season by adding in some cute leggings, some fur boots, or knee high boots. Or a skirt outfit with more spunk like this: http://www.celebrity-gossip.net/images/thumbnails/ashley-tisdale-6109-10.jpg

I really like this sexy layered look of a cute dress, coat and boots: http://images2.chictopia.com/photos/songofstyle/3952096422/green-jacket-pink-top-beige-skirt-black-boots_400.jpg
Cute winter leggings like these that show off the rest of your legs will make the skirt seem more casual: http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEspring08/images/moseyBEAUTY.jpg

As for colours, apparently different shades of purple and violet have a natural sex appeal to them for men, I read that when i was trying to figure out paint colours for my house. But really, i think men think girls are sexy in anything! Or have different preferences at least lol.

I have a cute long coat that over 20 guys have told me they think is really hot, i think it has something to do with the hood or the mysteriousness of how long it is, and i get lots of stares when I am taking it off to reveal what is under it. These types of coats are awesome for dramatic sexy entrances into places. Here is a pic of my coat: http://i42.tinypic.com/vo4l1t.jpg

Yeah you certainly don't want to look too serious at a bar, but a skirt and blouse isn't serious unless its professional work clothes!

Hmmm, well hope this helps a bit! Good luck, i'm sure whatever you come up with you will look great and sexy!

what made an ordinary person "Gatsby" the hero of the Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald?

sunnme

its for a school assignment please help its due 1st of march 2012 it is 25 marks so please give me an answer worth these marks

Answer
Jay Gatsby

Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us.

The title character of The Great Gatsby is a young man, around thirty years old, who rose from an impoverished childhood in rural North Dakota to become fabulously wealthy. However, he achieved this lofty goal by participating in organized crime, including distributing illegal alcohol and trading in stolen securities. From his early youth, Gatsby despised poverty and longed for wealth and sophisticationâhe dropped out of St. Olafâs College after only two weeks because he could not bear the janitorial job with which he was paying his tuition. Though Gatsby has always wanted to be rich, his main motivation in acquiring his fortune was his love for Daisy Buchanan, whom he met as a young military officer in Louisville before leaving to fight in World War I in 1917. Gatsby immediately fell in love with Daisyâs aura of luxury, grace, and charm, and lied to her about his own background in order to convince her that he was good enough for her. Daisy promised to wait for him when he left for the war, but married Tom Buchanan in 1919, while Gatsby was studying at Oxford after the war in an attempt to gain an education. From that moment on, Gatsby dedicated himself to winning Daisy back, and his acquisition of millions of dollars, his purchase of a gaudy mansion on West Egg, and his lavish weekly parties are all merely means to that end.
Fitzgerald delays the introduction of most of this information until fairly late in the novel. Gatsbyâs reputation precedes himâGatsby himself does not appear in a speaking role until Chapter 3. Fitzgerald initially presents Gatsby as the aloof, enigmatic host of the unbelievably opulent parties thrown every week at his mansion. He appears surrounded by spectacular luxury, courted by powerful men and beautiful women. He is the subject of a whirlwind of gossip throughout New York and is already a kind of legendary celebrity before he is ever introduced to the reader. Fitzgerald propels the novel forward through the early chapters by shrouding Gatsbyâs background and the source of his wealth in mystery (the reader learns about Gatsbyâs childhood in Chapter 6 and receives definitive proof of his criminal dealings in Chapter 7). As a result, the readerâs first, distant impressions of Gatsby strike quite a different note from that of the lovesick, naive young man who emerges during the later part of the novel.

Fitzgerald uses this technique of delayed character revelation to emphasize the theatrical quality of Gatsbyâs approach to life, which is an important part of his personality. Gatsby has literally created his own character, even changing his name from James Gatz to Jay Gatsby to represent his reinvention of himself. As his relentless quest for Daisy demonstrates, Gatsby has an extraordinary ability to transform his hopes and dreams into reality; at the beginning of the novel, he appears to the reader just as he desires to appear to the world. This talent for self-invention is what gives Gatsby his quality of âgreatnessâ: indeed, the title âThe Great Gatsbyâ is reminiscent of billings for such vaudeville magicians as âThe Great Houdiniâ and âThe Great Blackstone,â suggesting that the persona of Jay Gatsby is a masterful illusion.
As the novel progresses and Fitzgerald deconstructs Gatsbyâs self-presentation, Gatsby reveals himself to be an innocent, hopeful young man who stakes everything on his dreams, not realizing that his dreams are unworthy of him. Gatsby invests Daisy with an idealistic perfection that she cannot possibly attain in reality and pursues her with a passionate zeal that blinds him to her limitations. His dream of her disintegrates, revealing the corruption that wealth causes and the unworthiness of the goal, much in the way Fitzgerald sees the American dream crumbling in the 1920s, as Americaâs powerful optimism, vitality, and individualism become subordinated to the amoral pursuit of wealth.

Gatsby is contrasted most consistently with Nick. Critics point out that the former, passionate and active, and the latter, sober and reflective, seem to r

Why is it we don't start caring and wanting to change the world until a celebrity tells us to?

J B Gemini

Aiken, Milano, Glover. etc... These issues they talk about are not new, it's been happening since before some of us were born. But why is it, we as a whole, not the individual find it neccessary to want to change the world and help out with the cause when some of the biggest names in the industry get involved. Now everyone has a solution in fact some of their questions have 3000 answers worth of solutions. What is it that when a celebrity jumps up and says "join this cause" that triggers people minds and hearts, instead of an average joe asking you to do the same?

Answer
Good question, my friend. Very good question, indeed.

The problem is, most people are followers. Majority don't care much about the world except their own back yard. However, they do care about the Super Bowl, The American Idol, or gossiping and dishing the dirt about the rich and famous and celebrities. They watch the news and say... "oh, it ain't my problem... I've got enough problems of my own.." but they will watch what the celebrities are wearing and buy their name-brand clothing or purses and shoes, etc. They will go to see their favorite celebrity's concerts and cheer and laugh and cry - but they don't care much about the world.

So, when a celebrity jumps up and says... "join this cause", they will most likely do it.. It's sad, but true.. It's because they listen to their words and follow them like sheep. Fortunately, it's for a good cause.

This is the psychology of the masses, my friend. If you want to do something, you got to start doing it.. By doing what needs to be done, you lead yourself instead of following the crowd. This makes you a leader. When you get better at what you do, you will be able to lead others just like the celebrities did. Leaders innovate... followers imitate.

Answer
Hiya!
I access Heat's web pages because they are free. It's a not a great substitute for the actual magazine but it leads on to stories in the past so that's quite good because you get to snoop more. It's more for escapism than anything, I'm not obsessed with celebs or anything. I can go months without thinking about it. Course, with the whole credit crunch thing, a couple of quid a week on a magazine seems quite expensive now!

I'm thinking about joining the newspaper at my high school next year (because there's only like, 4 people involved in it), and I really want to be some sort of an entertainment writer, because I'm obsessed with stuff like movies, television, music, celebrities, ect.

Like, crazy obsessed.

But, I'm not sure how I would be able to convert the obsession into actually writing a column or article. Any tips for me?

Thanks :)

Answer
One student of mine attended the Demolition Derby then he had the

idea of going to the city newspaper office and told them if he could

write the article after the show, the answer was YES! ( from then on

he made pocket money with his enjoyment attending the show and

writing after. ) One good idea would be that you read the Celebrities

( movies) gossips and write a collumn ,,, Example:

Jennifer Lopez and her husband announced their divorce, they have

two children ( twins) What is your opinion on Divorces?
( that will give you a chance to interview people around your school and
write their answers ( without quoting their names)

Or: check what So and So celebrity is wearing and ask people for their
opinion on the dress or how they look etc.

Same you can do with music :" What is your favorite music and why"

I realize he made some mistakes, but the good he did:

Cut taxes for all Americans, upper, middle and lower income
Brought Freedom to Iraq, while removing a brutal dictator.
Restored honor to the White house, (after Clinton disgraced it)
Protected us from terrorists.
Made Education a top priority

Answer
Point-by-point rebuttal.

He did cut taxes. And he paid for those tax cuts by borrowing. The improvement to our economy was marginal but the impact on the deficit was huge.

He didn't bring freedom to Iraq. Iraq had a dictator, it's true, but he was a relatively popular one. Iraq was certainly a lot free-er than Myanmar, for example. And for all the talk of the gas attack on the Kurds, that happened in 1988. We invaded in 2003. The fact that he hadn't done anything heinous in the intervening 15 years doesn't speak well for the invasion.

He restored honor to the White House? How? By not getting blown? He might not have had a sex scandal, but he was an international joke. He did irreparable damage to America's reputation abroad and he commanded absolutely zero respect outside of the Red States. This is not worth arguing. George W Bush did NOT make America more respectable.

Did he protect us from terrorists? Tough to tell. Terrorism, on the whole, is almost non-existent. Over the past decade, Islamic terrorism has killed 1 American per million per year. That means that 999 999 Americans are NOT killed by Islamic terrorists each year. How much of that can be attributed to Bush and how much of that is just because terrorism is so rare that each attack is essentially an outlier. It is indisputable, however, that attempted attacks skyrocketed after Bush invaded Iraq.

And apparently he made education a top priority. This is news to me. You must be referring to the oh-so-popular No Child Left Behind plan. You certainly aren't referring to expense, because the total education budget for the United States is about 1/6th of what we spend on Defense. NCLB is controversial, to say the least. Some people like it, some don't. I haven't experienced it first hand so I can't judge. I do know that a common criticism is that it makes teachers "teach to the test" as opposed to teaching real skills, which means that the goal is to get a good grade on one specific test instead of actual learning. However you cut it, the 2000's will not be remembered as the "Decade of the Schools." More likely, it will be remembered as the decade when unprecedented numbers turned to home schooling, college became much more expensive and American students fell far behind the rest of the world in math and science.

The Iowa Supreme Court issued a unanimous ruling Friday finding that the state's same-sex marriage ban violates the constitutional rights of gay and lesbian couples, making Iowa the third state where gay marriage is legal. Where are we heading now? (besides up)

Answer
It's incredible news that marriage equality is accepted, not just in the Northeast, but in the God-fearing, American Heartland of the Midwest.

That means hearts and minds are being moved nationwide.

There will still be years of work to get same-sex marriage legal all across the country, because there are still folk like the aptly-named user "Gorillawits" who think it is "evil", LOL. But if acceptance can happen in Iowa -- it can and will happen all over the nation.

New Jersey is likely next, New York will follow suit, and the dominoes will start falling in places like Minnesota and Illinois.

EDIT: Wow, I did not realize Vermont was that close also!

My art teacher gave us an assignment to draw a well known woman giving birth in a strange way.
Any ideas of who or how?

Answer
Hahaha, wow that's cool!

For the well-known woman I could suggest
*Kim Kardashian
*Paris Hilton
*Katy Perry
*Rhianna
or *Heidi Montag.

As for giving birth in a wierd way ... hmmm ... I guess that would be best to make it specific for the certain person?
For example:
Heidi Montag could give birth from her breasts (come on, she's famous for them), Rhianna giving birth through her hair, Kim Kardashian giving birth in the back of an ugly pub (come on, she'd NEVER do it!!)

Just a few suggestions, hope I helped!

Why is Everyone All of a Sudden Talking About TWITTER?

M L

I've heard "Twitter" mentioned over a Dozen Times (or More) in the past 24 Hours. It's Not Exactly New, so what the Heck is this Sudden "Twitter-Blitz" all about??

Answer
Well Twitter is best when you want to connect with celebrities.

I have a twitter account and I didn't invite a single one of my friends to join it cuz its all about connecting with famous people. Well, lets say I'm a fan of Selena Gomez - I will add her at Twitter and she would post random notes on her twitter page stating stuff like "i am at puerto rico now and having loads of fun". so its like you know what your fav celeb is doing and you feel like you are "connected" to her and you can get quick real updates from her. not only that, if there's rumours&stuff - she could clear it up on twitter cuz its easy to access(you can send updates thru ur own phones). as for me, i have an account because i like to update short posts on my blog so rather than doing that - its better on twitter(mine's privatised) so its actually nice to read back ur own posts&such. (:

well, if you're interested - these are the celebs with real twitter account; Ashton Kutcher, P Diddy, Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, David Henrie, Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, John Mayer, Emmy Rossum, Matt Prokop, Jake T Austin, Esmee Denters, Lily Allen, Sara Bareilles, Perez Hilton.

(haha cant believe i look back at my twitter page to list this ^^)

btw you might be lucky cuz smtimes when you reply their post, they might reply back! yeah i've seen some of the celebs replying back but it'll usually happen if you are online with the celeb at the same time (:

but watch out cuz there's loads of imposters such as Emma Watson(which isn't her at all), Vanessa Hudgens, Jonas Brothers etc.

to sum it all: yes i agree with you that this isn't new but its been on news, gossips, celebrities blog - because of one reason: celebs are starting to use it. unlike myspace, where its usually the publisher/crew updating some of the celebs site - twitter is much more personal and isn't as messy, its kinda very direct =D

so that's basically Twitter! â¥

Who claims credit for these attacks? How many attackers were there? There have been precious few details in the news. How could this possibly help any group or nation? Is it just revenge? What kind of philosophy could justify random murder?

Answer
The Hindu reports:

MUMBAI: Maharashtra Police investigators say they have evidence that operatives of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba carried out the fidayeen-squad attacks in Mumbai â a charge which, if proven, could have far-reaching consequences for India-Pakistan relations.

The Guardian reports:

A group calling itself the Deccan Mujahideen claimed the operation. The name indicates a local group - the Deccan is the central Indian plateau - and a probable link to the Indian Mujahideen who started a bloody bombing campaign a year ago.

The Herald Sun reports:

AT LEAST seven terrorists who took part in the bloody massacre in Mumbai that has left more than 190 dead and 295 injured have been linked to Britain.

In addition, Time Magazine has a list of possible groups involved.

Reports Iâve heard imply that there were about two dozen attackers, and that they moved with the sort of precise coordination that reminded me of classes in small unit tactics. Far from being random, their attacks were precisely aimed.

The terrorists staged a well-planned attack on Indiaâs financial capital. They devastated two key business hotels - one of which was a historic Indian landmark - and struck at its most popular tourist cafe.

It was a sophisticated propaganda exercise aimed at hitting India where it hurts most: its emerging status as an economic power. But beyond their competence in executing their aims, little is known of the estimated two dozen men who attacked the city of some 18m people.

The thing that is most clear is that they planned the operation to the last detail. Ratan Tata, the industrialist whose group owns the Taj Mahal Palace and Tower hotel, said the gunmen knew every detail of the complex, which combines a 105-year old structure with a newer high-rise section.

"They seem to know their way around the back part of the hotel and the kitchens, so one assumes there has been a considerable amount of planning in this operation," Mr Tata said.

A marine commando officer, who appeared on television, said the terrorists knew the layout of the hotel better than his men did.

"The Taj has 400 rooms. We do not know the layout of the hotel. Staff did not know the layout. When we had to go in, we had to go on our own," he said.

Think about that. The terrorists who hit the Taj Mahal knew its internal layout better than the people who work there. Considerable planning and memorizing and rehearsing went into this.

Initial word from interrogation of one terrorist who was taken alive:

Kasab has told police that they were sent with a specific mission of targeting Israelis to avenge atrocities on Palestinians. This was why they targetted Nariman House, a complex meant for Israelis. Sources said Kasabâs colleagues killed in the operation had stayed in Nariman House earlier.

Itâs unclear to me whether Nariman House is another name for Chabad House, or if there were attacks on two Jewish community centers. Every other target catered to Europeans and Americans visiting the city, from the Taj Mahal to a restaurant that shows up in American books on backpacking across India.

The Chabad House was one of 10 sites attacked in a well-coordinated onslaught that targeted tourists, especially American and British nationals. Other targets included a railroad station, two hotels, including the Taj Mahal Hotel, a tourist restaurant and two hospitals.

Itâs clear to me that the attack was planned and coordinated as a light infantry assault on unprotected targets. The distinction between combatants and noncombatants, specified in the laws of war is one that has been under attack on all fronts, from terrorists to the United States Government.

The attackers clearly subscribe to this notion. They also appear to place blame on groups rather than individuals, which means that punishing members of a group are (almost?) as good as punishing the individuals whose actions they're angry about. Theyâre angry at Westerners and Jews, so they attacked the easiest Westerners and Jews to reach. And they did so in a fashion designed to maximize the death toll and news coverage.

What is the best gain and bass boost setting for my system?

I have one Kicker 12" L7 2 ohm '06 sub in a vented box (VS12L72). I'm am running it with a Kicker ZX750.1 amp. I am using a Pioneer 6800 Head Unit. I dont have anything to read a clipped signal. I dont want to turn the sub up to until it distorts, because I dont have a warrenty on the sub. The sub is working, but i want to get the most out of it.
Is it better to leave the bass boast off on the amp, and use my head unit for bass with the equalizer? I want loud bass, without the risk of blowing the sub. I appriciate any help.

Answer
I'll give you the steps I use when I first install a new system and then you can tweak yours to fit your own ears....good news though...I've had 2 of that same sub so let me tell you that you are being very wise in asking for help. They blow rather easily, but sound great. They aren't problem prone, they just get a lot of movement (BASS!) so you have to be more careful than other subs.
OK, first, I'm not familiar with your head unit, but I'd guess that if it's fairly new then it probably has a subwoofer non-fading pre-out, right? So if it does, then it probably also has a subwoofer level control. Turn this control all the way down. Now go ahead and turn your amp's gain to about 80%. I don't see any problem with using your amp's bass boost, but you'll have to tinker with it to see where exactly YOU like it. For this how-to let's set it at about 70hz, okay? Then you can adjust it later if you don't like it there. Alright, now put in one of the songs you like to listen to at high volumes. Now turn your STEREO speakers as high as they can go without any distortion, as high as you're ever going to turn your stereo. If you hear any muddiness/distortion at all, then you have them too loud. Okay, now that you have your highs set to their limit, you can start cranking up your subwoofer level control one unit at a time until your sub is banging away comfortably WITHOUT distortion. Don't just sit in the front of your car and listen, once the bass starts getting pretty high, go to the rear of your car (or wherever your sub is) every time you raise the level and listen for any kind of flutter at all. If you hear any, then just back the level control back down. Remember where your sub level control is and never go above it, and your sub should be fine.
Now then, if you have ahead unit without a sub level control, then you do pretty much the same thing, except that in this case you will set your highs up as high as possible AFTER turning your amp's gain all the way down. Then, slowly turn the gain up until you hear flutter, then back it back down a bit. Simple as pie.
Good luck and have fun...I had two 12" L7's about 5 years ago....they hit so hard I could make people puke with extended playing time. But I got rid of them because Metallica sounded like crap...they're just waaay too slow to keep up with rock. Sound great with hip-hop though.

Critique and suggestions for near finished site?

Mat@Intern

I am finalizing a hip hop portal for news, events, unsigned artists and promotional music among other things that will come later. It is not done yet and we are not directing anyone to it but I thought I would put it on here and see what everyone thinks about it before I put it out there sometime next week.

The site is http://undergroundinnertainment.com

Be honest anything you like or dont like please let me know I want as much input as I can get.
Thank you everyone who posts.

Answer
First off: Good job.

The site has a nice theme to it, and I really like the way you incorporated JavaScript effects (Mootools) into your design in a way that it is not so "In your face". This site was definitely better than I thought it was going to be.

Now, for the critique. I do not think that red is a suitable color for your titles. It seems kind of out of place, and it makes the page look somewhat awkward. However, the red could be very suitable if you remove that background image at the top of the page, or replaced it with something more relevant. That image is not adding anything to your page.

Another thing I noticed is that you seem to also try to be using orange as a main color as well, and that is fine--if you weren't already using red. You should pick either orange OR red, and then stick to that color. You may use different shades of that color, but stick to the same overall feel. Orange and red, in my opinion, do not mix.

Otherwise, I think it could turn out to be a very nice site indeed.

Good job.

Why does CCP claiming harmony in China yet to spend more on internal security?

Story by BEIJING (Reuters),

China unveiled another double-digit rise in military expenditure on Tuesday, but for a third year in a row the defence budget will be exceeded by spending on domestic security, highlighting Beijing's concern about internal threats.

Spending on the People's Liberation Army (PLA) will rise 10.7% to 740.6 billion yuan, while the domestic security budget will go up at a slightly slower pace, by 8.7%, to 769.1 billion yuan, according to the budget released at the opening of parliament's annual meeting.

The numbers underscore the ruling Communist Party's vigilance not only about territorial disputes with Japan and Southeast Asia and the U.S. "pivot" back to the region, but also about popular unrest over corruption, pollution and abuse of power, despite robust economic growth and rising incomes.

The number of "mass incidents" of unrest recorded by the Chinese government grew from 8,700 in 1993 to about 90,000 in 2010, according to several government-backed studies. Some estimates are higher, and the government has not released official data for recent years.

"It shows the party is more concerned about the potential risks of destabilisation coming from inside the country than outside, which tells us the party is much less confident," said Nicholas Bequelin, a researcher at Human Rights Watch, a New York-based advocacy group.

"A confident government that is not afraid of its population doesn't need to have a budget for domestic security that is over defence spending," he added.

In his "state of the nation" address to the largely rubber-stamp legislature, Premier Wen Jiabao listed maintaining social harmony and stability as one of the government's priorities for this year.

"We should improve the mechanism for assessing potential risks major policy decisions may pose for social stability ... The purpose of this work is to preserve law and order and promote social harmony and stability."

Still, China's defence spending is contained at about 5.4% of total expenditure, up from 5.3% last year, and remains at about one-fifth of the Pentagon's outlays. But even with its worries about domestic problems, Beijing has become increasingly assertive on the world stage.

Wen said the government "should accelerate the modernisation of national defence and the armed forces ... (and) should resolutely uphold China's sovereignty, security and territorial integrity and ensure its peaceful development".

"It's not good news for the world that a country as large as China is unable to protect itself," parliament spokeswoman Fu Ying said on Monday. "China's peaceful foreign policies and its defensive military
policies are conducive to security and peace in Asia." Asian neighbours, however, have been nervous about Beijing's expanding military, and this latest double-digit rise could reinforce disquiet in Japan, India, Southeast Asia and self-ruled Taiwan, which China considers part of its territory.

A spokesman for Taiwan's main opposition Democratic Progressive Party accused China of being two-faced. "China has been stressing a peace agreement with Taipei and portraying a peaceful image, but its high military budget and provocative actions in the East and South China Seas disputes run contrary to this image," said Lin Chun-Hsien.

Japan and China have locked horns over islands each claims in the East China Sea. Vietnam, the Philippines and other nations have challenged Beijing over claims to swathes of the South China Sea that could be rich in oil and gas. Over the past six months, China's stand-off with Japan over a series of uninhabited rocky islands in the Eas
East China Sea known as the Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China has become more acrimonious.

The increase announced in the national budget is at a slightly slower pace than the 11.2 percent rise planned for last year, though actual spending in 2012 reached 691.3 billion yuan compared with the budgeted 670.3 billion yuan.
Dog Lover, the most hardworking CCP mouthpiece, keeps conveying a message that CCP is vigorously preparing to go to war. If CCP is peaceful and harmonious as she claims herself to be, there's no need to keep mentioning war.

Answer
Because, in the CCP mindset, Harmony = Homogeneity

What are some of the core beliefs of Scientology?

Frankenste

I have never read L. Ron Hubbards book, "Dyanetics", and know it is considered to be the bible for Scientology. I probably will never read it, but want to know the key factors of this religion, which seems to have a few followers who when talking seem to be normal, with the exception of Tom Cruise. What has caused this religion to become popular, which was introduced by a science fiction writer?
Wow! I really don't know what's worse. Someone making fun of others beliefs, which I think was Hubbards true intention by creating such a comic book story, or anyone actually believing that any of his science fiction writing to be true. I think like any religion, there are words of wisdom for people, and Scientology may have some good ideas about making people successful in life, as do most other religions. But for anyone to actually consider that any of the alien part of the story to have actually occurred as compared to some kind of symbolism, or just a good sci-fi story, they have to be a little out of their mind, if not totally. I bet Hubbard gathered a flock of people even before he considered making any money off his flock. If you have followers who throw money at you, why not lead them? And if the follower is making money in the process, why not follow? I think Scientology might be a clean and sober way of life, but is geared as a business. The new religion is money.
I can only comment on things as I see them. Scientology is more of a mystery to me than most religions, and I think it's due to the fact I have never heard anyone really talk about what goes on in it. I can see where it works for many people, but I still don't see why it is labeled a religion as compared to a self help course. I'm glad it works for some people, because I believe many people need some kind of path to follow. I will not knock any religion that is aimed at making someone a better person by becoming more in tune with theirselves and their surroundings, as long as it is not at the expense of others. I think L. Ron Hubbard was extremely successful in life, by the amount of money and material posessions he obtained, as well as a very large following, but I think that his bazarre stories of alien souls attaching themselves to humans were a product of his wild imagination that drew the interest of many people. I guess faith in oneself might be the best faith to have?

Answer
They believe many things, including the notion that we are all eternally existing souls called "Thetans", that we can each control matter, energy, space and time by will alone once we reach our true potential, that the concept of a messiah is a mental implant, that our bodies are infested with the murdered souls of aliens from 75 million years ago, that psychiatry is orchestrating a worldwide conspiracy, and that mental illness does not exist. Here's a more detailed overview:

Scientology, which questionably calls itself a new "religion", is the brainchild of 1950âs science fiction writer & occult enthusiast L. Ron Hubbard. The organization, by means of Hubbardâs self created psychotherapy technique called âDianeticsâ, claims to be able to help rid members of any & all mental constraints including but not limited to emotional scarring (from this & "past" lives) due to "engrams" (past negative experiences stored in our unconscious mind), psychological disorders & chemical imbalances (the solution is to convince members that these things don't actually exist) & drug dependence (including legally prescribed psychopharmaceuticals which counteract the effects of psychological disorders Scientologists believe to be nonexistent). Their âtreatmentâ of substance abuse includes little more than massive, often dangerous doses of vitamins and unhealthy extended sessions in a sauna.

Scientology is most certainly NOT a religion. In fact, one of the only reasons they enjoy "tax exempt status" on religious ground in the United States is because they bullied the IRS into a "deal" through extremely aggressive barratry (which is the offense of persistently instigating groundless lawsuits) against said government agency & its officials, & arranged to drop all 2,500 frivolous lawsuits only when an "agreement" was reached. In addition, Scientology's lawyers hired private investigators to dig up any "dirt" on IRS agents which was then used to blackmail or publicly smear all "vulnerable" agents. It was an all-out WAR that Scientology had waged against the IRS, & was even described as such by Scientology's "CEO", David Miscavige, in his 1993 speech to the International Association of Scientologists.

The official Scientology organization is composed of a number of âlevelsâ. One begins as a âpreclearâ & works their way up. One must purchase virtually every service crucial to advancement directly from the "church" & at staggering prices. "Auditing", for example, is purchased in 12½ hour blocks, costing anywhere from $200-$750 for introductory sessions to between $8,000 & $9,000 for advanced sessions. Basically, Scientology claims to possess exclusive knowledge of the path to religious redemption & then charges obscene amounts of money for every tiny incremental step towards this end. Visit this link to see how $380,000 is a conservative estimate for the total cost of moving all the way up the Scientology hierarchal ladder:
http://www.xenu.net/archive/prices.html
These are the total costs for auditing alone:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientology_as_a_business#Costs
Hereâs an explanation of what âauditingâ is:
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20061224182319AA2nnd6

At level OT III (Operating Thetan Level 3), some very strange & fiercely guarded secrets are imparted upon worthy members who have paid enough money to advance to such a level (and no, this isn't a joke): The evil alien ruler Xenu killed millions of aliens (Thetans) from around the universe by kidnapping them, bringing them to earth in golden DC-8 âspace-planesâ, stacking them around volcanoes & blowing them up by dropping âh-bombsâ into the volcanoes. Scientologists believe the souls of these aliens (these souls are "Body Thetans") were captured, brainwashed & released; they then attached themselves to our ancestors (and according to Scientologyâs belief in Thetan immortality, they also attached to us during âpast livesâ) & cause many of our mental & physical ills to this day. Auditing is said to âclearâ us of these Body Thetans as well as the âmental implantsâ they supposedly impose on our minds.

Scientology has taken a very hostile stance towards psychiatry & psychiatric drugs irrespective of the fact that some people require medication to remain adequately functional during everyday life. It doesnât recognize legitimate conditions like autism, epilepsy, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, or ANY neurological disorder / chemical imbalance at all, & the âchurchâ has been known to withhold prescription pharmaceuticals from members (often with harmful & deadly results). The âChurchâ blames psychiatry for the Holocaust, as well as school shootings & even September 11th. Itâs been suggested that Hubbardâs vehement opposition was born of the psychiatric communityâs rejection of his âtechâ as a valid treatment method, but itâs also possible that Hubbard chose psychiatry as a scapegoat. Organizations like Scientology are notorious for villainizing a specific out-group because their âstand against the enemyâ fosters cohesion within said organization, & psychiatry was an effective rallying point considering many people already distrust & oppose the mental health profession.

L. Ron Hubbard, the man behind the creation of Scientology, was & still is a controversial figure. Biographies & lists of personal accomplishments differ greatly between Scientology & non-Scientology publications as the âchurchâ tends to exaggerate & outright lie about his early life, his education, his travels, his achievements etc, preferring to paint a distorted, flattering picture. Several books & articles present facts which flatly contradict these church-published accounts (links to free online copies of these books & articles are provided below), showing conclusively that he was NOT the brilliant, accomplished figure revered by Scientologists. During his autopsy, the sedative Vistaril⢠was present in his body, which several of his assistants would later attest was only one of many psychiatric & pain medications Hubbard ingested over the years. It had also been said by many who knew Hubbard personally that at the end of his life he was âa psychopathic insane person screaming about BT's [Body Thetans]â¦â

http://lisatrust.bogie.nl/scientology/essays/jeff-hubbard.htm

To be blunt, Scientology is a cult. It employs semi-legitimate psychotherapy & self-help methods to keep people loyal & convinced of its merit while it simultaneously sucks them dry financially & attempts to keep them far away from ANYONE, even friends & family, who would dissuade them from remaining in such a harmful situation. It bullies all known critics, opponents, âenemiesâ, etc, often through malicious litigation & character assassination. Itâs a particularly greedy as well as manipulative & dangerous cult that takes its anti-psychiatry fanaticism to deadly limits.

For those who read Karrine Steffans' last book, who all celebrities did she had sex with?

DJ1991

Answer
The names of HipHop stars and actors whose private parts she is all too familiar with: P. Diddy, Xzibit, Ice-T, Jay-Z, Damon Dash, Ja Rule, DMX, Vin Diesel, Fred Durst, Shaq, Usher and many more. Steffens was linked with comedian and talk show host Bill Maher of Real Time with Bill Maher. That relationship apparently ended as of August 2006, as it was reported she was with Bobby Brown after he separated from Whitney Houston. Questions

Most of the best selling newspapers in the UK are red tops, but in the USA, it's the broadsheet ones. Apparently, the Brits are not that into broadsheets that tend to be intellectual, while the american people are more into serious stuff. Any idea?

( PS: Aren't the English fellows supposed to be a tad more serious than the Americans ? )

Answer
At the same time though, American news channels on TV are a lot like Bitish tabloids (Fox News, MSNBC and that...) whereas British TV news tends to be more serious.

I guess it comes down to tradition and how people tend to get their news.

What are the most popular comedy or talk show radio programs in United States?

I know of a lot popular UK radio programes such as just a minute, now show, news quiz, dad's army, etc, some of which has been around for decades.

But I can't remember any similar US radio programs like these.
So, I will be very thankful if anyone can fill me in with this knowledge.

Thank you very much.

Answer
OMG!

I just made a list of TV shows! You should've stopped me!
Anyway... Radio? It's mostly music, but this is what I know:

Prairie Home Companion
Anything on National Public Radio
Howard Stern
Bubba the Love Sponge
???

Howard Stern and Bubba are pretty vulgar, but some people think it's funny.
Radio Talk bores me. I wonder if that is somehow telling about my intelligence or attention span.

How did the organic food market gain popularity?

Hi,
I have been loosely following the news lately because of traveling and being busy. I was wondering how did Whole Food Market gain popularity in a down market? I looked at some news saying that its stock rose by a whooping 300%. While all other big-stock values with big names were flip-flopping like pancakes. I don't understand did I miss something on the news? Did the government promote some bill so that organic food can be sold more? Or did some impossible protest made organic food popular? I don't understand it as a person looking at a regular view point or as a financial researcher. Please tell me what happened.

Answer
You're kind of asking a few different questions. Your main ones seem to be about organic foods gaining popularity, and another question asks about the success of Whole Foods Markets, which does sell a lot of organic food, but not exclusively.

Organic food has been around a long time. Probably the 1970s is when it really emerged as a niche market, and specialty stores began offering organic foods. The popularity of organic foods has pretty much steadily increased since then, to the point where now it makes up about 5-7% of all food purchased. That may seem small, but keep in mind the food market is huge. Although it's emergence may seem sudden to you, the development of the organic market has been anything but, instead growing over many years. The rate of growth of organic foods has increased in recent years, perhaps as a response to conventional modern agriculture's rapid adoption of new technologies. Things like genetically modified crop varieties and drugs that accelerate weight gain in animals make agriculture more productive but turn some people off, and as the amount of technology used on farms increases, the number of people who wish to buy food produced without some of it grows.

Around the year 2000, the organic market had grown to a point where national standards and enforcement of them were neccesary to ensure integrity to the organic brand, and the USDA national organic program was created. Some feel the USDA takeover of the organic brand gave it an increased legitimacy, and helped grow organic sales.

As far as Whole Foods goes - yes, they've been very successful, but they're certainly not an overnight success. Their website has a pretty good page with their history, so I won't repeat it here, but they more or less mirror the organic story - they started as a single location health food store and grew both through expansion, and later, acquisition of similar chains. No other "health food / natural food" store or whatever category you want to put them in has managed to achieve the kind of scale and geographical reach they have.

As far as their stock performance goes, yes, over the past 5 years they may be up 300%, but YTD, they've actually underperformed the S&P 500, and they're well below the return of conventional grocer Kroger. I think their long term prospects remain bright, but I'm not sure they're going to produce big gains in the short term.

What do you think about the fact that US president can only serve for 2 terms?Shouldn't it be like in Russia?

Tyler

In Russia, there is no limit to the total number of terms that a President may serve. Only a limitation in how many terms you can serve as a president consecutively, which is two terms. For instance, V. Putin served two consecutive terms(2000-2008) so he had to let someone else to take the office in 2008. But now he can run again after the current pres, Medvedev has almost served his term.

Answer
There are two schools of thought. On the one hand, shouldn't the majority rule, and allow a good President to serve as many terms as he likes? On the other, what if he gets so entrenched that he becomes corrupt and no one notices.

I watch the Russian news every night and Putin & Medvyedev are great. People present problems and they fix them. The United Russia party holds 70% of the seats in the Duma. Those who think him authoritarian are just jealous, since the country is doing really well and they are so popular, they don't need to suppress any opposition. Putin could easily amend the constitution to permit him to serve as President for Life if he wanted.

Remember we had no 3 term limit until Roosevelt won three terms and the Republicans balked. He was just too popular, which upset the minority party. The mayor of Chicago is retiring after his 7th term. There are Congressmen who have served longer.
