I need to contact some news channels in Pensacola in hopes that they will air my phone # with a few pictures of my fiancé's "long lost" brother. We really want to find him and I'm running out of ideas. Can anyone name a few popular news channels I should try? Or have any other suggestions?

Answer
WEAR is the local ABC station in Pensacola. I believe they are located on Mobile Hwy. I drove past the station a few weeks ago on my way to the gun show there. This is their website: http://www.weartv.com/

I'm not sure about a local NBC station in Pensacola and there is a CBS station out of Mobile, Alabama, so no need for there to be a CBS station in Pensacola since the two cities are only about an hour drive from each other.

I don't watch TV at all at home, so i'm not up to date on where all the tv stations are broadcasting from, but i'm positive about WEAR (ABC) and the CBS stations in the Pensacola area.

How did certain colleges or universities become so popular in the first place?

caltam84

It is said that universities such as Ivy League, Stanford or Harvard are popular. Some people are so excited about going to these colleges/universities.

Some people choose to go to community college for 2 to 3 years, and then transfer to university. And that is perfectly fine.

Answer
The ivies and other top schools tend to be among the oldest colleges with the most money. They can hire some of the best researchers in the fields, which means they have experts who are consulted often and get their names in the news where people will see them and add to the prestige. Many people trying to get into the top schools are looking for bragging rights more than anything else; some people are applying for the resources they offer that no one else does. Yes, starting at community college is a good plan for many people. But not for some fields, like those going to graduate or medical school.

@what,who if you are into history perhaps you know that ottoman is the first state to guarantee the freedom of religion of its citizens. so are you talking about a fully supression of culture?

yes they talk about the discriminative laws against nonmuslims, true, but i'm telling everyone to evaluate it with the conditions of its time. It's a hated practice, we hate it too, but in that time, Catholics were killing Orthodox. And for them the life safety-which comes first, was under ottoman rather than the rest of europe.

after the french revolution and reforms, ottoman was behind in terms of democracy and freedom, that's why it failed.

you cant just say "the dark history of ottoman" byzantine was no brighter.

you are into nothing, you're just an ignorant.

"For centuries, the Ottoman Empire was the refuge of the Jews of Europe, who did not have the freedom of religion in Europe that the citizens of the Ottoman Empire did. Jews expelled from Spain in 1492 found refuge in the Balkans and elsewhere in Ottoman territory, where the sultan decreed they should be welcomed."

What is the most important news in your part of the world today?

floridawor

I have been busy most morning creating a blog and have not even peeked at news headlines. I could probably guess some of those headlines regarding economy and job news in the U.S. and probably even Europe, especially since last I heard late Saturday night the IMF's problem with Greece was no way near a solution.

If you're not into economy and government news, what else is important for you out there?

Answer
In my part of the world, Singapore the interest is about who should be the next President of the nation, a largely ceremonial position, The question revolves around whether he/she ought to be independent of the ruling party the People's Action Party or not.
Not something that keeps us awake nights but maybe just as well.

It's not going to be easy.

Answer
Not be easy. You must not underestimate the fact that almost all Latin American and Caribbean countries have strongly criticized the UK and are ready to retaliate if London is carrying out his threats.

- Ecuador's National Assembly today condemned and rejected British threats in the case of Assange, and recommended to the government report them to the Security Council of United Nations and convene an urgent meeting

- The Russian government also ruled on the case Assange and asked to London on Friday to respect the spirit of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

- Meanwhile, the Spanish jurist Baltasar Garzon, who is leading the defense of the australian, promised today that will exhaust all legal remedies to ensure the trip to Ecuador of his client as a refugee, even to go to the International Court of Justice

- With 23 votes in favor, 5 against and 3 abstentions, the Organization of American States (OAS) approved on Friday to make a meeting of foreign ministers of member countries to address threats issued by Britain against Ecuador.

- The group ALBA (Venezuela, Cuba, Nicaragua, Ecuador, Bolivia, Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica and St. Vincent and the Grenadines) said in a statement is categorically opposed to the threats made by the UK Government on the integrity of the Embassy of Ecuador in London. He also announced that in order to assess this, the ALBA has called for the next few hours to a special meeting of foreign ministers and warned the government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland on the serious consequences of implementing their threats would for relations with the countries of ALBA.

- UNASUR, which includes Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay and Venezuela, also held at the request of Ecuador, a special meeting of foreign ministers in Guayaquil tomorrow Sunday to consider the same issue, the Foreign Ministry of Peru announced today.

- August 18, 2012.-The Asociación Americana de Juristas (AAJ) with consultative status at the United Nations, expressed support for dignified and sovereign decision of the government of Ecuador to grant political asylum to the Australian Julian Assange.

Are there any communities similar to Jonestown today?

A57Moon- s

After watching the special on CNN...I am just curious. if there is....who is keeping an eye and an ear out?

Answer
Jonestown was set up as a socialist utopia. There are always kind souls watching for those kinds of activities. It was a good documentary, and tastefully done. I remember when the story was first reported (late 70's, 1978-9 perhaps, it was a news story then). Not all the facts were known immediately. But as more details came out, the horror came into full view. Even after all these years I still recall that dreadful feeling thinking about all those people caught up in socialism. So sad. That is why we must all be wary of those kinds of 'leaders' and their false promises.

Added: @ BonBon. No, the Branch Davidians were a 7th Day Adventist group whose facility was burned down in 1993. You are thinking of a different bunch. Also, neither of those two were socialists. Jim Jones was a socialist cult leader. The mix of socialism and Christianity was how he tricked people into going to Guyana and giving him power over them in the first place.

Why was the Rebel chosen as the University of Mississippi's mascot?

I would like a website or book where I can find the information as well.

Answer
Why ? Why else other than that U of Miss is proud of its Confederate Heritage, the fact that Mississippi was the home of that traitor Jefferson Davis, and to make it clear to the Negros on campus that they might have the right tio attend classes but they are still second class citizens of 'proud white' Mississpippi University.

The Mascot in question had been around since 1979 so it was hardly a product of the seggregationist past but rather an effort to reignite that 'golden era.'

Here are some links and snippets....

http://orig.clarionledger.com/news/0305/21/vum03.html

http://www.blinkbits.com/bits/viewtopic/university_of_mississippi_wikipedia_rss_feed?t=2523873
"""Ole Miss' sports teams, nicknamed the Rebels, compete in the competetive twelve-member Southeastern Conference (West Division) of the NCAA's Division I. The school's colors are crimson and blue, purposely chosen to mirror the school colors of Harvard and Yale, respectively.

Since 1983, the administration has distanced itself from the negative connotations associated with its Confederate symbolism, including barring faculty from displaying any Confederate imagery in their offices. In 1997, sticks were banned, under the guise of fan safety, to discourage fans from displaying the Confederate battle flag at football games. This controversy began when coach Tommy Tuberville complained that the battle flag was undermining his efforts to recruit black athletes.

In 2003, the administration eliminated Colonel Reb, the on the field mascot since 1979. A contest was held in which fans were invited to design a replacement. The athletic department chose two finalists, Rebel Bruiser and Rowdy Rebel, and invited fans to vote on their favorite. The limited fan response as well as ridicule from fans of rival schools prompted the administration to cancel the poll, so Ole Miss currently has no mascot. """

http://orig.clarionledger.com/news/0306/19/srick.html
""So, you think Colonel Rebel, the ill-fated University of Mississippi mascot, is a long-standing Ole Miss tradition, of a similar vintage to those stately oaks in The Grove?

Wrong. Jackson lawyer Jeff Hubbard was the original Colonel Rebel mascot. Hubbard first donned that huge, mustachioed head, with the wide-brimmed hat, all the way back in 1979.

"It was when sideline mascots were really coming into vogue both in college sports and the pros," Hubbard says by telephone from his Jackson office. "Everybody was going to a mascot that was sort of a caricature of the team's nickname."

In other words, it was late 20th century. Old traditions are said to die hard. How about relatively new ones?

"I'm torn about this," Hubbard says. "I represent eight professional mascots. I'm negotiating the contract for the Sacramento Kings' (NBA) mascot this week. Really good mascots add a lot.

"And I enjoyed my time as Colonel Rebel," Hubbard continues. "It wasn't about the Confederacy; it was about Ole Miss. At the same time, I know other schools use it against us in recruiting. It's a shame.

"Bottom line: I'm for what's best for Ole Miss. I trust Robert Khayat and Pete Boone to do what's best for the university."

Khayat, Ole Miss chancellor, and Boone, the athletic director, want to put the Confederacy and the 19th century behind them and move forward into the 21st century. Ole Miss coaches have said for years that Old South symbols, such as the Confederate battle flag, the song Dixie and Colonel Rebel, have hurt them in the recruitment of African-American athletes.

But, get this: The model for the original Colonel Rebel emblem was a black man, Blind Jim Ivy, a campus fixture for years until he died in 1955.

Historian David Sansing documents that little known fact in his splendid history of Ole Miss.

"Is that not irony?" Sansing says from his Oxford home. "If you look at the photo of Blind Jim in the three-piece suit, with the hat, there's a striking resemblance. The original Colonel Rebel emblem is a spitting image of Blind Jim Ivy, except for white skin."

Ivy attended most Ole Miss athletic events and was fond of saying, "I've never seen Ole Miss lose." Ivy was very much a part of the Ole Miss scene in 1936. That was the year Billy Gates, editor of the school newspaper, proposed a contest to produce a new nickname for Ole Miss teams, which were then known as The Flood.

Rebels was one of five entries submitted to a panel of sports writers. Of 42 newsmen contacted, 21 responded and 'Rebels' was the choice of 18. That's how The Flood became the Rebels. Two years later, Colonel Rebel appeared for the first time as an illustration in the university yearbook. It would be 41 more years before Colonel Rebel appeared on the sidelines.

"The closest we had before that was a cheerleader, with a microphone, dressed in a Confederate Army uniform," Jeff Hubbard says.

UM loyalty, not mascot

Gates would become the Ole Miss sports information director, whose job it was to publicize John Vaught's nationally renowned football teams. Gates died years ago, but his son, Bill Gates, continues the family's Ole Miss tradition. Gates, who lives in Memphis, is a diehard Rebel fan and a past president of Memphis-area Ole Miss alumni.

"Obviously, I'm steeped in Ole Miss traditions," Bill Gates says. "It was my daddy's idea to come up with the new nickname, so in a way he was responsible for Colonel Rebel. I can appreciate the feelings a lot of alumni and fans have for Colonel Rebel. At the same time, I'm for whatever will move Ole Miss forward. You can't tie one arm behind Deuce McAllister's back and expect him not to fumble. Well, you can't tie one hand behind our coaches' backs and expect them to win championships.

"Personally," Gates continues, "I'd rather have no mascot in Atlanta for the SEC championship game than have Colonel Rebel in Shreveport for the Independence Bowl."

Many, many others, including so many letter writers to this newspaper, disagree. They say they prefer tradition to political correctness. They believe if Colonel Rebel dies this year, the nickname Rebels may soon follow.

Sansing, on the other hand, points to universities that have successfully changed mascots and flourished, citing Stanford and Southern Miss as examples.

Stanford changed from Indians to the Cardinal. USM went from Southerners to Golden Eagles in 1972 and did away with a mascot called General Nat, named for Confederate general Nathan Bedford Forrest, founder of the Ku Klux Klan.

"I don't think there's any question that Southern is better off for the change," Sansing says.

Sansing, known to friends as the Emperor of the South End Zone, proudly cheers his Rebels.

"I love Ole Miss, but I cheer for the team; I cheer for the university," Sansing says. "People who are loyal to Ole Miss are loyal to the university, not some funny looking, little Civil War character."

Sansing is a wise, thoughtful man, who loves Ole Miss dearly. I bow to the Emperor on this one.""""

What does the day at MEPS look like before you leave to Basic?

Dawid

I am leaving in 2 months and I want to know how the last MEPS visit looks.

Answer
Here is MEPS per Sacramento:

You'll spend hours waiting around. Probably around eight. During these eight hours you'll do some paperwork and then wait around somemore. You'll take another drug test and blood test. Then you'll wait. Eventually (about eight hours later) you'll be sent back to your hotel to ship the next morning. They will tell you to go straight to bed. My advice is to do what I did and go get f***ked up with a few of your new friends. But be sure to be back in your room by 0400.

You'll hit breakfast by about 0430 (still hung over if you're like me.) From there you get on a bus and start making your way to BCT, which will take till about 2100. Drink some gatorade and catch some sleep while you're waiting.

When you get to BCT you'll start the reception process. I've heard at some BCT sites (Ft. Chill) you get to grab some rack time. Lucky me, I went to Ft. Benning where we were forced to stay awake for about 21 hours straight while being issued uniforms. IT SUCKED. Funny, but I remember the suck fondly now. Weird.

Anyway, you'll get some sleep eventually. You'll spend 3 - 7 days in reception before starting BCT.

The good news: From MEPS to the end of reception is the WORST part of training. Give me PT over boredom any day of the week! Just concentrate on meeting people and trying to embrace the suck. BCT will be over before you know it.

Good luck bro! Remember what I said about the drinking! Its the last day you'll get to until week 2 of AIT!

Are news people giving terrorist ideas on which cities to attack?

Yesterday, I was watching the late news and the woman was like is "Las Vegas on the terrorist list", "We have an influx of 3 million tourist". I was like how in the hell are they even aloud to say thing like that. Is like me saying "My neighbor keeps his money under the mattress","Do you think someone can break into his house while he is working and steal the money".

Answer
Probably. Most of the time news, media, movies, give great ideas to people looking to harm. All these movies, like Saw, give sick people great ideas, and when a terrorist sees a news reporter from the country they're looking to terrorize say "hey! This city has the most tourists in the country! Should we be afraid?" I would imagine 50,000 light bulbs go off in their heads. Its crazy.

what were you doing when the news of Michael Jackson death came in?

follower_o

I got the news yesterday from someone on the way to Richmond Indiana. Since my job take me to different cities and states, I don't have time to watch the news or get on line. So it was a big shock when I found out yesterday that Michael Jackson died Thursday.

Answer
I was at Disney MGM theme park in Orlando. I heard a little boy saying that Michael Jackson died and I didn't believe it. Then hours later during the afternoon my friend's sister told her and I called my sister and she confirmed it and I called my mom and dad. I was shocked I couldn't believe it. The rest of the day I was saying to my friends...I CANT BELIEVE MICHAEL DIED. and it still is hard to believe. Sometimes like today and yesterday it took me a while to sink in. It's unbelievable. but he's in a better place because here everyone made his life a living h***.

I too think it's stupid to buy celebrity gossip magazines. I don't give a damn what dumb celebrities are doing.

What would you look for in a magazine?

GJ Chikiba

Ok so my friends and I are making a magazine, it probably wont get published but what would you look for in a magazine? Gossip, secrets, celebs? Or a magazine that tries to solve every-day problems; eg. 10 ways to avoid bullying and being bullied at school. Stuff like that? What do you look for in a mag that is great for all ages and all types, shy, sporty, gossip-y, musical ect ? Please help me!

Answer
I look for good fashion related articles. I remember once reading all about Coco Chanel and was so fascinated. I'm not into fashion show reviews and all that, I like nice articles about different aspects of fashion, like how a certain trend came to be or how a well knows brand started, like Guess or Versace. I wish fashion mags will write more articles and not use those boring pictures all the time.

Fashion magazine should include photography, makeup and tips, the featured current fashion.

i look for the latest trends, styles, colors etc.
what the celebrities are wearing
ups and downs
latest gossip about clothes

Where do I get web updates on flooded roads when heavy rain falls in Las Vegas?

PeguinBack

Recently in Las Vegas, a heavy down pour of rain occurred. Now I know in this city the roads are not built nor designed with storm drains on the side of the road, meaning roads flood get flooded easily with little water. Question is where on the internet can I get maps or updates on what roads have been closed or flooded out due to heavy rainfall of long duration?
I ask this so I know what roads to avoid when I go to work.

Answer
Here's some clues: Don't take roads that cross over or go along a washout drain. Such as Koval Lane. It usually floods good behind Imperial Palace, seen it on the news numerous times.

Decatur/Sahara flooded good. I heard that one the last time it flooded in August driving to work via the local radio station. Not sure which station. So listen to stations 1 hour before you leave for work. Heard Oakey/Rancho flooded too.

Call the Nevada Dept. Of Transportation. Ask about road closures/floods.

http://www.klas-tv.com I checked all the local newsstation websites before I journeyed out that morning. None reported any overflows/floods. DARN. I was late to work.

Just do a research on what flooded the last few times.

And 1 storm before the last 2, It flooded out in front of the Palace Station on Sahara. Standing water.

How do you think technology has impacted our access to both "hard" and "soft" news?

celebrity gossip will smith
on Jessica Burciaga Biography-Celebrity News, Videos, Gossip and Photos
celebrity gossip will smith image

kady_baby

I don't get this question at all and it's for my government class....please help me

Answer
I don't normally go for the "doing other people's homework" thing, but i'll help out.

"Hard" news is important stories. Investigative journalism about war, crime, science... things that impact the world.

"Soft" news is stories about the old lady beating up her mugger, or Jimmy winning his 4-H competition, or celebrity gossip. It's generally light-hearted stuff that might get people talking, but it's not what the old-school journalists would call news.

Technology has brought us what they call a "24-hour news cycle" where TV stations are forced to fill every hour of every day with SOME sort of information. Because of this, we do get constant updates on very important hard news that our parents/grandparents would probably only get in tomorrow's newspaper. This makes for a more well-informed society, and that is a good thing for everyone.

On the other hand, we also get a week-long memorial for Anna Nicole Smith, who - despite being the victim of an unfortunate death - should not have been considered important enough to fill hours and hours of news coverage. In this way, people are more informed, but it's the equivalent of a steady diet of junk food.

Hope this helps.

is it just me or are there any others who do not care to hear anything further about anna nicole smith?

d. w

i am so tired of seeing her name in the news. let the woman rest in peace. do you feel like me?

Answer
I definitely agree. It is this way with all these big celebrity stories. OJ, JonBenet, Anna Nicole.

Just let it go people. Why do "we" care so much about these things anyway? There are millions of people every day that have the same thing or worse happen to them and it is not plastered all over the TV for everyone to see. Why are these people any more important than every day people all over the world.

Who cares??? Get a life, don't watch this crap. Read a book, do some gardening, mentor a child, go for a walk. Do something useful instead of just promoting global gossip.
