Why isnt this in the news?

James924

There hasnt been nearly as much news in the past few months about Iraq as there typically has been for the past few years. It seems that when bombs arent going off and US Troops arent dying, the media doesnt want to report on Iraq. Here is a DoD site with a day by day, hour by hour report on incidents in Iraq.
Check it out. Why arent all these things in the news? Because they are mostly GOOD NEWS. And good news in iraq apparently isn't news worthy.
Here is the link:
http://www.arcent.army.mil/media_releases/media_releases.asp

Its becoming increasingly popular to get foreign policy info from .gov and .mil and foreign policy and pentagon sites these days as personal .org blogs are less and less reliable for accuracy.
here are a few of my favorites:

Answer
Excellent observation. The answer is that the Liberal Left are so deeply invested in America's defeat that this type of news will never be allowed to be reported by the mainstream media.
Instead their mantra is gloom and doom.

Vote non-LibDem in '08.

is the aussie Rupert Murdoch owner of Fox-news and other pro-communist liberal media , a radical zi0nist?

Q.

Answer
So much for cooling down the rhetoric. At a time when liberals are blaming the "vitriol" of the conservative movement for violence in America, Media Matters (a liberal group which targets conservative media) is planning what it calls a campaign of "guerrilla warfare and sabotage" against Fox News. It just goes to show that if liberals can't win on message, they will seek to destroy the messenger.

In a story running on Politico.com, Media Matters founder David Brock described the old strategy against Fox News as one of "containment." The new strategy is simple: "War on Fox."

In an interview and a 2010 planning memo shared with POLITICO, Brock listed the fronts on which Media Matters -- which he said is operating on a $10 million-plus annual budget -- is working to chip away at Fox and its parent company, News Corp. They include its bread-and-butter distribution of embarrassing clips and attempts to rebut Fox points, as well as a series of under-the-radar tactics.

Media Matters, Brock said, is assembling opposition research files not only on Fox's top executives but on a series of midlevel officials. It has hired an activist who has led a successful campaign to press advertisers to avoid Glenn Beck's show. The group is assembling a legal team to help people who have clashed with Fox to file lawsuits for defamation, invasion of privacy or other causes.

Amazing, isn't it? Rather than focusing on doing a better job of getting out the liberal message and promoting left wing policies, this group seeks to bring down the most popular cable news outlet in America. Instead of putting out a better product, they seek to destroy the other product using "under-the-radar tactics" and attacks on those who work at Fox. This is nothing short of pathetic.

Taking a casual look at the Media Matters web site, one will find a plethora of headlines aimed at Fox News:

Q. the US and NATO were bombing the hell out of northwest Pakistan, how would you react?

Please look at these 3 sources before answering:

Petraeus predicts intensified fighting in 2011

"Petraeus said intelligence reports indicate that Taliban leaders are worried by the situation and that there is "friction and discord" between the guerrillas in the field and [[ their leadership ]] in Pakistan."

Karak borders the Taliban-controlled tribal agency of North Waziristan, as well as the Taliban insurgency-hit districts of Hangu, Bannu, and Kohat. Since 2005, the Taliban spillover from North and South Waziristan has affected these settled districts. In 2007, a secret Pakistani government report described these districts as being out of the government's control.

Also keep in mind, President Obama's plan is to start withdrawing troops in July. Wouldn't it be logical to target the "Taliban Leadership" in NW Pakistan before pulling troops out of Afghanistan?
No I don't mean "Drone Attacks". I mean the real deal. 3 to 5 days or more.. 24/7 pounding the Hell out of locations WE KNOW these people are operating from. No More Safe Haven! Time to put a stop to this bullchit!
Yes, 2010 was a very rough year over there for The United States, The United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia.

Some good points folks.

And to Gadfly: Yeah I didn't forget about the nukes. What the hell I guess those 'contingency plans' may have to be put into gear a little early. You know it's coming eventually. Allowing them nukes was the single Stupidest thing I've witnessed in my life I believe.

Answer
I would be cautiously optimistic and concerned.

In my opinion, the reason we have not already taken out known sites in NW Pakistan is that Pakistan is a nuclear power that has recently shown signs that they realize the threat posed to them by the Taliban and Al qaeda and are finally motivated to take steps necessary to deal with them for their own stability and safety.

http://www.claws.in/index.php?action=master&task=370&u_id=58

Were we to unilaterally take out the seven or so known locations the Taliban and Al qaeda are operating from in Pakistan, the Pakistan government could very well loose the popular support of its people and fall to extremist who would inherent their nuclear weapons. Were this unthinkable chain of events to occur, I do not feel we have a commander in chief capable of or willing to take the swift and decisive actions that would be required to have any hope of securing or destroying Pakistanis nuclear weapons before they were disseminated among various terrorist organizations should the present regime be overthrown.

And there is also the danger of pushing the Pakistanis closer to the beckoning Chinese:

"It is generally argued in Pakistan that Al-Qaeda is the problem of the US, and the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and its growing network of militant outfits is the problem of Pakistan. Will the US expand unilateral action in Pakistanâs tribal areas and in the heartland against Al-Qaeda, whose members have been conveniently termed ânon-state actorsâ by the Pakistan government?

In 2009, the US had threatened to expand the drone attacks in Balochistan around Quetta to target the Afghan Talibanâs Quetta Shura. But this option was not exercised. However, the drone attacks in Khyber Agency on 15 May 2010, the first ever in close proximity to Peshawar, confirm that the US is implementing its threats of widening the drone campaign in Pakistan. There were about 50 drone strikes in 2009 that killed around 708 people. In 2010, it has already witnessed 35 drone attacks that caused 350 civilian deaths.

Pakistan-US relations have been passing through numerous challenges and have witnessed trust deficit between them. Meanwhile, China has been playing a subtle regional policy and drawing Pakistan towards it. The deterioration in Pakistan-US relations will have wider implications for the region as a whole." http://www.claws.in/index.php?action=master&task=585&u_id=58

How is a mugshot made public?

nckct4

How is it so easy for the newspapers and gossip rags to get celebrity mugshots? If I was arrested, can someone just look me up if they were mad at me and plaster my mugshot everywhere?
Very curious bc Christina Aguilera got arrested yesterday or whatever and it's already out!

Answer
Your mug shot is a matter of public record.

Not many people have much interest in seeing *your* mug shot, but they can request a copy if they seriously decide they want one. It may cost for the copy, but it's public record.

by Stuart Burson

A 16-year-old boy is dead after collapsing Tuesday afternoon during a basketball game in East Texas. It happened during a game in Hudson.

Larry Prentice, a player from Bullard High School, collapsed while another player was shooting free throws. Nurses at the game tried to revive him after he showed no signs of a pulse.

Prentice was taken by ambulance to Woodland Heights hospital in Lufkin where he was pronounced dead.

The death of such a young person is hitting family members, teammates classmates, and the Bullard community hard.

One of Larry's teammates tells us the news of Larry's death is hard to believe.

"It just kind of like stunned me at first, I kept having to repeat it to myself, like, making it register. Because, it didn't register. As soon as he said it everyone went like, 'ohhh' in the room... and we prayed immediately after. His youth pastor was there, and prayed for us... for his family." says teammate Ryan Hamilton.

A Bullard teacher says the death is especially hard for such a small community.

"It's a small district, we're very close knit and tight, they play football and basketball, and all the other sports together. They're in classes together they eat lunch together, it's going to be... it's a great loss, it's going to leave a deep, deep void in the high school and in the whole community." says 8th grade math teacher Gwenda Hamilton.

It is still not known what caused Larry Prentice to collapse Tuesday afternoon.

just how popular is this idea on the rapture in the "christian community"?

Dave

that the rapture is going to be in May 21, 2011 and that the earth will be destroyed in October 21, 2011

***extra credit***
refute the belief of it being true if you think it false or if you hold this view as true defend it.

this question comes from seeing this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o206kXo3Dwc
@fireball
i know we believe in the rapture, i am referring to how many believe in those dates being accurate.
LottaLou
actually, you may be wrong there, the bible says there will be a "new earth" (revelation 21) so it appears the current earth will be destroyed (then again i may be wrong and when it say "new earth" it is referring to the earth being "renewed")

Answer
As a Christian, that is too boring.

And I don't believe those dates are accurate. Because it says the earth is going to be destroyed. Jesus Christ hasn't even returned after the Great Tribulation that is yet to happen.

I do believe it is very possible that the Rapture will happen very soon.
The Father even gave me a vision. He first said that I will be seeing His Son, the King, very soon. That I will look at Him & He will look at me... Then the vision that Jesus stood up with His left arm raised up and saying, "Come up hither." reaching up toward His left in the sky... Where the Holy Angels & Saints are.
Then the next Day Franklin Graham preached that Jesus won't be coming back as Savior. He Is coming back as King. He already came back as Savior...
Since then, I have had a vision of Jesus eyes, and they are Golden Brown color with darker brown around the color. Black pupils. And white glimmering. And one could consider the fire in His eyes as the touch of orange / red. (Jesus had dark brown eyes on earth, but raised up lighter colored eyes. His face lighter & brighter.) And to think that when we see Jesus as He Is, we will change in the twinkle of an eye. We will raise up like He raised up, in an everlasting flesh & bone.

The earth isn't going to be destroyed. The earth is forever. It will go through horrible birthing pains, but still will last.

Also the Millennium Reign of Christ is still yet to happen.

Jesus is personally stirring me up to be ready for the 'rapture'. And by Ministers. Just today I read http://JVIM on the rapture, the Marriage Supper of the Lamb. Who is in and who is out... Who is in attentance and who isn't. The difference between the Righteousness of Christ that redeems us (we are born of God by), and the 'Righteousness of the Saints' being dressed in white, being plural and so according to our works of obedience...

Please read JVIM Newsletter comparing Christ Righteousness & Righteousness of the Saints.
http://www.jvim.com/
1. click 'email news letter'
2. click 'View' - View Past Issues of the Newsletter
3. click '2009'
4. click 'July, 6'
The difference between 'Christ Righteousness' and the 'Righteousness of the Saints'.
This is new info for me, but I believe necessary in understanding the times we are living in. And how to be dressed in 'white' the 'Righteousness of the Saints'.
And Jack Van Impe's Greek understanding on Righteousness of being plural for meaning the Saints. While Christ Righteousness is singular Righteousness.
This does help us understand bible scripture regarding 'Eternal Life' & our 'rewards'.
And the Marriage Supper of the Lamb.

Plus Mark Biltz who has a book of the Holy Feasts and their meaning in God's time schedule. He was interviewed on http://www.sidroth.org . And to compare with the new moons or solar or lunar eclipses, etc. God shows us signs in the heavens of His time schedule. And also the Holy Feasts are signs. And dress rehearsals for the real thing.

-------------

There are plenty of Bible scripture that write that the earth is forever. But there is the end of the age as we know it. And there is the Age of Christ yet to be. And there is the Great White Throne Judgment where the earth & heaven left those standing before God at this event.

But the earth is forever. Just moved around a bit.

Libyan Rebels, the Aftermath, what are your thoughts on these serious turn of events?

Q. http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2011/sep/4/jihadists-plot-to-take-over-libya/

"ihadists among the Libyan rebels revealed plans last week on the Internet to subvert the post-Moammar Gadhafi government and create an Islamist state"

http://news.yahoo.com/libyan-rebels-round-black-africans-130723394.html

"Rebel forces and armed civilians are rounding up thousands of black Libyans and migrants from sub-Sahara Africa"

http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/M/ML_LIBYA_FEARFUL_FOREIGNERS?SITE=AP&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT&CTIME=2011-09-04-17-02-06

"A Ghanaian teacher cowers in his house, certain he will be grabbed at a checkpoint because of his dark skin. Armed rebels detain 19 Ukrainian cooks and oil workers for several days on unsupported claims that they are really snipers for Moammar Gadhafi."

Is this simply chaos cooling off and thus a part of the good transformation which Obama and the west paid and participated in or is this a more of a result of our gullibility and or misprediction? What are your thoughts?

Answer
It was predictable. Obama is a dreamer who thought it was a popular uprising. Just more incompetence from our Community Organizer In Chief.

What's scary is the types of weapons now available to terrorists. Libya has chemical and biological weapons. They also had the remnants of their nuclear program. That is a very serous concern.

What could I talk about with friends?

Smart101

It's a new school year, and all we talked about mostly last year with my friends were boys, and so it became hard to think of topics with other friends. Now I'm pretty sure that this is going to get boring for all of us if we continue this but I don't know what to talk about. I ask my friends how's their weekend, and I'm exaggerating, it's not boys all the times - especially with guy friends, but still it's a bit annoying now. So what could I talk about? And we don't talk about tv as much. Plz help!
BTW, I'm pretty hyper so it's hard for me to be quiet unless matters are serious or I make myself

Answer
tv, clothes, latest news/gossip, movies, new products, other people, politics, lessons, anything tbh

tv: did u see (insert programme) last night? blah blah etc.

clothes: hey i love ur (shoes?) where'd u get them from? that often triggers a long chat about clothes.

news/gossip: did u hear about what happened in (zimbabwe?).../omg (celeb couple) broke up/megan fox looked hot at the (BRIT awards?) didnt she?

movies: similar to tv convo

new product: omg the new iphone is sooo lush/i want that maybelline mascara in that commercial i saw on starz/blah blah cant think of anything else

other people: did u hear what (izzy smith) did with (zac holmen) last night?/isnt (jackie long) such a nice person? dont spread big rumours tho

How much longer can the news media cover up for Obama?

They overlook rising unemployment, his attempt to free the terrorist, his ignorance of the deficit but how much longer can this ignorance be ignored will it be too late before the world wakes up to the ruins just like Mugabe did to Zimbabwe?

Answer
As long as there is money and favors to reward those who have control of the media like Rupert Murdoch and GE.

What is the most popular, read newspaper in Barbados? Thanks.?

Maria

Wikipedia.com says Daily Nation is the leading one, and Barbados Advocate is 2nd. Why would they say that? Are they wrong?

Answer
Yes the Nation is the most popular and widely read paper. They printed over 44,000 on the weekend paper this week. It is loaded with lots of entertainment news, features and there is a popular column named "Dear Christine". One can send any problems that one has to be get advice. It is even popular on other islands. In the Saturday Nation there is a very feature called "I confess". It is available almost everywhere.

The Advocate has a Friday paper called the "Heat". That is a good one. All the malicious gossip and there is a very popular feature called "Fashion Police 'pon' Patrol". That is the bomb. A photographer take a pic of people on the streets when they are not matching or hair styles that looks wrong (extensions). If the bags are not matching te shoes, or if the bra strap is showing, the pants is too tight or too short or if generally the colours do not go well together. The face is always blotted out but people that know the person would still know it is them. depends on the severity of the outfit they can be sentence to either a warning or fashion police jail.

Why is this name so popular....?

Lanani

My local newspaper recently printed a "Babies of 2005" special section. Out of curiosity, I began looking at the names...

Fully 77 (I counted) of the three or four hundred babies had a name that was a variation of: Aiden, Brayden, Hayden, Taiden, Payton, or Jayden. They were spelled all sorts of different ways, but they are still very similar.

I think women initially began to give their children these names because they were unique, but they're becoming VERY common now... no one seem to have noticed this yet!

Three of my friends are pregnant right now, and two of them want to name their baby Aiden (one wants to spell it Aydin). They don't believe that it's becoming a very, very common name.
I should add that there are FOUR Braydens in my son's daycare. And one Jayden.
Here are the top baby names for 2005.. Aidan is #1.

http://www.babycenter.com/general/babynaming/pregnancy/1459677.html

Answer
Another name like that is Austin. My boys were born in Germany, and we wanted to give them unique Texan names that weren't too out there. Since my wife and I are from Austin, Travis County Texas, We named them Austin and Travis.

It was okay while we were overseas. We ran into the ocassional Austin but hardly ever a Travis. We are back stateside now, and my son is in a class with 18 students. FOUR OF THEM ARE NAMED AUSTIN!! Three have the same last initial, so they are all called by their LAST NAME.

Now, all four Austins LOVE this. They are all the best of friends and think it is cool that they get to be different. But it drives ME up the wall every time I call my kid's name and he says "My name's not Austin, it's Jones!!"

I guess my point is is that you can pick a name for your kids thinking it is pretty unique. But if you think it is a good name for a kid, tens if not hundreds of thousands might be thinking the same thing.

How big is the cell that carried out the bombing in Boston?

The associates seem as determined as they were. Ibragim Todashev was shot and killed today or LATE last night. He is a friend on one of the bombers. "agent was conducting official duties when the shooting occurred." comes from http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Latest-News-Wires/2013/0522/Tsarnaev-friend-killed-in-Orlando-by-FBI . Agent as in singular? Agent going to POSSIBLY conduct a follow-up interview? The other friend seemed to be painting the FBI in the bad light. Are we just seeing the crumbs or were the brothers the tip of the iceberg the government is now aware of but we are of course in the dark. Wonder how many of our clandestine agents are in Chechnya as we speak carrying out covert missions.
@ AJ The FBI shooting the friend IS WHAT MY QUESTION was about. Skipping the question's content can leave you in the dark.

Why yes I have heard about it and the FBI story WAS the catalyst for this question. I even provided the link.
I wouldn't be so sure there isn't a cell. The mother, the brother and now friends OUTSIDE of the family. It's a bit more than two guys that felt their religion had been disrespected. This story is far from over.

Answer
Yes, I wonder the same thing. For now it seems that only the brothers were involved but they are still investigating. Did you catch the breaking news that an FBI agent shot and killed an Orlando man early this morning who had been questioned for several hours about his alleged ties to Boston bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev? See link. This case is therefore far from closed. Let's hope they catch all the bastards involved.

Do you think the MA,Watertown Explosion incident is related to the boston(ma) marathon incident?

Q. I just watch the news just now and i saw that in watertown,Ma had explosions reported just now and plus a police officer was shot multiple times, What in the world is going on??????

Answer
UPDATE:1:45 AM EST. A shooting erupted on the MIT campus last night. That officer was killed. Later, a car was seized on the MIT campus by the shooter. Thereafter, a suspect was arrested not far from MIT in Watertown. There was only ONE suspect in Watertown taken into custody, not TWO. There is no confirmation that the MIT, Boston Marathon and the Watertown matters are related. Federal agents were at the MIT and the Watertown incidents tonight, CNN now confirms.

NBC News drops Stone Phillips. Your thoughts on today's announcement?

Q. NBC News announced today that they're dropping Stone Phillips from "Dateline NBC" after 15 years as the show's anchor. In a cost cutting move by NBC, they will be concentrating on other stories reported by other correspondonts. Phillips' contract with NBC expires at the end of June & has no further comment. Your thoughts on this?

Answer
Having been a middle-management victim of cost cutting and downsizings at USA TODAY, I can empathize with Phillips. However, I'm sure NBC was a lot more considerate of Phillips. He'll land on his feet, perhaps on another network. It'd be great to have him replace the likes of "Baba Wawa" on ABC; her mush-mouth manner of speaking and inane subject matter bores me to tears. I don't care about the latest celebrity's life crisis. I'd like to see more 'meaty' reports about government corruption, political scandals, and bureaucratic waste of taxpayers' money. -RKO- 05/22/07

what happened to the news story today about the texas shooting involving two black males? i saw it this mornin?

Q. why was this story removed? it happens alot.I see a story in the morning and then I go to read about it later and it is gone...what is going on?

Answer
In the morning, they were hoping for another rampage school killing. They treated it as world news. I first learned of it this morning on Al Jazeera English.
Then it came out that, not only was the shooter Black, but the shooting arose out of a dispute by two Black men who just happened to be on the Lone Star college campus, and that nobody else was targeted. Even more important, NOBODY was KILLED.
[BTW, so far the USA has not had even one Black rampage killer.]
Suddenly it was just a stupid dispute between a couple of gang members. Yes, I am pretty sure it was gang related, judging by the clothing of the disputants.
So, not wanting to look like the opportunists they are, the news media dropped the story.
They should never have made it so big in the first place.

what exactly is HLN News channel?

everykat

is it CNN or is it HLN...what is it?

Answer
CNN used to just cover stories briefly. Later they spun off HLN, or HeadLine News. HLN is supposed to cover all the top stories every 30 minutes. It only gives you a summary of the events. CNN meanwhile presents more in-depth coverage and discussion of various topics.

why do american people care so much about celebrities lives?

hidden mas

like how people are always going on gossip websites, buying gossip magazines, taliking about there personal lives wanting new scandals I once went to mexico and no one over there cared about celebrities or their personal lives and here I noticed alot of people dont have lives and look into there lives instead

Answer
It's not as bad as you think. Some of us are just casual observers with a desire to be entertained. That's who I DO read the tabloids. I simply don't believe them, most of the time. I used to read the Weekly World News, too. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bat_Boy_(character)

Does Wikipedia have the right to talk about celebrities personal lives?

Kristine A

Does Wikipedia have the right to talk about celebrities personal lives? It seems that Wikipedia has become a gossip blog or something. It talk about people's personal live and half of it might not even be true. Is that what an encyclopedia is suppose to do?

Answer
Rick Gates in 1993 was the first to propose a precursor to Wikipedia but the concept of an open source web-based online encyclopedia was proposed a little later by Richard Stallman around 1999. Wikipedia was formally launched on 15 January 2001 by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger using the concept and technology of a wiki pioneered by Ward Cunningham. Initially, Wikipedia was created to complement Nupedia, an online encyclopedia project edited solely by experts, by providing additional draft articles and ideas for it. Wikipedia quickly overtook Nupedia, becoming a global project in multiple languages and inspiring a wide range of additional reference projects. Today, Wikipedia includes 15 million freely usable articles in over two hundred languages worldwide written by a million registered user accounts and countless anonymous contributors.

As of 1 April 2011 there are approximately 3,600,000 articles in the English Wikipedia and the readers should apply their minds while reading these articles vis a vis documented or cited references for authenticity. There may be a few rotten apples or eggs in the basket but by and large contributors and readers have really helped Wikipedia for it is today.

So, covering celebrities' personal lives is not an issue per se but only when there is a violation of the conscientious line.

What Wikipedia implies is: utmost good faith! But, ironically, its open style was/is exploited by a few mischief-mongers or psychopaths so that they intentionally - at times maliciously - plant false information on the details of celebrities. Wikipedia is a Free Universal Encyclopedia and Learning Resource which needs to be used with civility.

But, in haste, when information is uploaded, there are occasions when the information is not backed by authentic footnotes or references; yet Wikipedia management has made allowed for open editing with authentic sources.

Celebrities love publicity. So media in general are interested in propagating information on celebrities' personal lives on the ground that public love those details. Quiet true but still I should say so only with a caveat. Somewhere Wikipedia ought to draw a line of caution when it comes to writing on the personal lives of celebrities. It would not be appropriate to talk of Wikipedia's right. Actually, Wikipedia is trying to weed out mischief on its pages but still contributions flood it that screening all the articles is not instantly feasible.

What is beauty defined as in other countries/times?

Q. I need to pick three countries/times and show the differences of their thoughts of beauty. I was aiming for a country in the Middle East, something in Asia and maybe beauty in another part of the world or just three distinct times in American history.

Could you please give me some examples or links to this information?

Answer
You could do three examples of body modification

burmese long neck women(asia)
http://www.theage.com.au/news/world/burmas-longneck-women-struggle-to-break-out-of-thailands-humanzoo/2008/01/11/1199988589409.html

Mursi woman with famous lip disk(africa)

Mauritania's 'wife-fattening' (arab-perhaps middle east)
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/3429903.stm

alternately you could do the USA and Europe
corseting in Victorian times
the boyish body popular in the 1920's -focus especially on flappers
and then the play-boy bunny/barbie ideal of 36-24-36 (36 inch bust circumference, 24 inch waist circumference, 36 inch hip circumference)(1960's-present)

maybe tie this into society's view of women, and women's view of themselves in these times and places to make it a stellar paper.

How well do you trust wrestling dirt sheets?

Lecter

What I mean by "dirt sheets" are reports of a certain promotion that make their way online. They could be reports about backstage drama, spoilers, etc. One of the most popular reporters of these online reports is Dave Meltzer.

So do you believe everything that is reported as absolutely true or do you see some of it as gossip like celebrity gossip?

Answer
For the most part, I see it as gossip. However, some of the information on those sites turn out to be legit. Dirt sheets should never be trusted 100%, though, because things can always change, especially in WWE. And of course, some of these sites are more reliable than others. It just depends on where the site reporters find their information.

Where can I find the best celebrity gossip?

Eviction fees in NJ.?

Q. I told the landlord that I would be paying the rent late (on the 20th of the month). Now he is charging me $500. For his lawyers fees for evictioning me. I made the rent payment when I told him I would and have not been late before or after this one time. But he still says I owe him the $500. Is this legal? I would think that it is not since it was not even 30 days late. Thanks

Answer
New Jersey has very specific laws.

If you are even one day late with the rent, the landlord can file for eviction based upon non-payment. A grace period is the period before you are charged a late fee and has nothing to do with the day your rent is due. If you rent is due on the 1st and they don't have it by midnite, they can file the summons & complaint at 9:00 am on the 2nd. There is no "30 days" or whatever in New Jersey. Filing for non-payment requires no prior notice unless your landlord put it in your lease that they would give you notice.

If you don't have a lease, your landlord cannot charge you late fees or legal fees.

If you live in a rent controlled unit, most towns have limits on the late fee that can be charged. Other than that, the late fee is subject to a reasonableness test that varies from county to county. Usually it runs around 10%.

If you do have a lease that lists late fees and attorney fees as "additional rent" you will have the fees taken out of your deposit if you don't pay.

But the really good news is that in New Jersey, landlords are limited to "reasonable" actual attorney fees ... and $500 is laughable since you didn't even make it to the court appearance stage.

The filing fee on a non-payment case in New Jersey is anywhere from $27 to $32, depending on what county you are in. To do the actual paperwork involved in filing a non-payment complaint, the going rate for an attorney in New Jersey is anywhere from $75 to $200. The complaint would have been statutorily dismissed when you paid the rent, so there would be no court appearance fee.

Look at the summons & complaint you received. It should have the name of the attorney or firm that prepared and filed it. If you didn't get a summons & complaint then your landlord is lying about having filed because there is no way to stop the process once it is started. If he tries to tell you that he or they called the court and "told them not to serve you because you paid" then he is lying. You would have been served anyway, and the notice of dismissal would have been sent to the court separately.

If you were served a summons & complaint but it wasn't prepared by AND signed by an attorney, then your landlord is lying. Make sure an attorney signed it, and that your landlord just didn't do it himself and insert the name of a lawyer or firm.

Your landlord had every right to file (assuming he actually did), but he can't pull numbers out of his butt. If he filed himself, the most he can charge you is the actual filing fee of $27 to $32. He can't charge for his time, gas, etc. It's strictly actual cost.

If he tries to take an imaginary fee of $500 out of your deposit, you can sue him in small claims under the consumer fraud statute. That means he will have to pay you $1,000 (double what he owes you) for trying to cheat you.

How many units are in your building? Is it owner occupied? Were you notified of the location of your deposit in writing within 30 days of giving it to him? I'm asking because there may be a way to protect yourself from him trying to deduct anything from your deposit depending on your answer. Post the answer to those questions as additional info, and I will update my answer to tell you if you can do this or not.

Edison NJ police detective is charged with shoplifting from local supermarket?

Edison police detective is charged with shoplifting from local supermarket
by Tom Haydon/The Star-Ledger
Wednesday April 01, 2009, 8:15 PM

An Edison police detective with 22 years on the force faces a charge of shoplifting from a township supermarket, but his lawyer called the allegation baseless.

David Yanvary, 54, is accused of taking $42 worth of items from a store on March 17, Edison Police Director Bryan Collier confirmed today.
Chris Faytok/The Star-LedgerEdison police officer David Yanvary walks out of police headquarters in Edison today. Yanvary, a 22 year veteran on the force, is accused of shoplifting at a local supermarket. 4:12:34 PM

"This department has drawn a line in the sand. Misconduct of any kind will not be tolerated. The tax-paying public and the men and woman of this police department deserve no less," Collier said.

He declined to comment further on the charges.

Yanvary, who worked for the township nearly eight years before joining the police force for a total of more than 29 years of service, has filed for retirement.

Timothy Smith, a South Orange lawyer representing Yanvary, said his client filed for retirement more than a week ago.

"He wasn't serve with the charge until late yesterday. It's totally unrelated. One has nothing to do with the other," Smith said. He called shoplifting charge "baseless" and said "we're very confident he will be totally vindicated," Smith said.

He claimed the charge was filed by a vindictive supermarket manager. Yanvary had receipts for the merchandise, Smith said.

When Mayor June Choi took office in 2006, he called for stronger leadership, accountability and discipline to the force, which suffered a string of embarrassing incidents involving its officers in the past.

Last year, in a shake-up of the department, Choi tapped Collier, a former federal drug enforcement agent, to be township police director.

Answer
So what is your question? This news article is from April 1 - April Fools Day! But I don't think it's a joke...actually it's a shameful way for a police officer to go out. I hope he really does have receipts and is found innocent of the charges - after all, it took a couple weeks for the grocery store manager to come forward with the charges.

By the way, in my area (Ohio), the Olmsted Township Police Chief had to resign from his job last Friday after getting caught in a park with another man and is facing sex charges. And the Olmsted Falls high school band director was sentenced to 3 1/2 years in prison today for having sex with one of his students. Both of these are worse than possible shoplifting. But why wouldn't a police officer have enough money to pay for his groceries?

(Guys opinion) who do u believe is the most attractive Celebrity and why (dont just say looks)?

Q. Lemme know thanks!

Answer
I think each country has attractive female celebrities, e.g. Kumiko Takeda of Japan, Wang Tsu-Hsien of Republic of China, Aishwarya Rai of India, Olga Kurylenko of the Soviet Republics, Kate Beckinsale of England, Kristen Kreuk of Canada, Monica Bellucci of Italy, Kelly Hu of Hawaii, Felicia Lee of Singapore, etc. I can only judge mainly by their looks, for I haven't met most of them, and I don't read celebrity gossip rags. Kumiko Takeda is the most beautiful lady I've seen in person, and she's nice to everyone around the world I hear. Some celebrities and vain and egotistical, but she isn't. She was born in Fukuoka, Japan and moved to California where I met her. Wang Tsu-Hsien has visited California, and she was a spoiled brat to everyone. Some of my Chinese friends dealt with her, and they now depise her.

The Goddess Skaði.... feel like I'm missing something?

Q. According to the Irminen Gesallschaft Website Njorð and Skaði are no longer married, but I have not read anything about them splitting up... is this strictly German Lore, or did I just miss something?

Also, is Skaði found in England? If so what is her Anglo-Saxon name?
Thanks!

--feels like i'm gossiping about celebrities--

Answer
Skaði is not found in England in the same way as she is in the Norse, Swedish and Danish lore because she is not so important to the English. Skaði is the personification of the Scandinavian land, this is where the name Scandinavia comes from, "Skaði's land". In Old English Scede is a posible name for Skaði and the Old English Scandinavia is called Scedeland (see Beowulf), also original homeland of the Danes is Skane (Scandia).

Skaði is the winter shadows and therefore can be seen in English as Sceadu meaning shadow or dark shape (pronounced she-ad-u from where we got shadow). As the Anglii came from the southern Danish peninsular and the Saxons came from northern Germany they were not so attached to Skaði as their cousins in Scandinavia proper. It could be that Nerthus takes the Skaði role for the Anglii and Gefion for the Danish islands (she ploughed them from the Swedish mainland). When the Angles and Saxons came to England they left Nerthus behind and it is likely the Norse left Skaði behind too.

Ynlingasaga say this of the marriage of Njorð and Skaði:

'Njord took a wife called Skade; but she would not live with him and married afterwards Odin, and had many sons by him, of whom one was called Saeming; and about him Eyvind Skaldaspiller sings thus: -- "To Asa's son Queen Skade bore Saeming, who dyed his shield in gore, -- The giant-queen of rock and snow, Who loves to dwell on earth below, The iron pine-tree's daughter, she Sprung from the rocks that rib the sea, To Odin bore full many a son, Heroes of many a battle won." To Saeming Earl Hakon the Great reckoned back his pedigree. This Swithiod they called Mannheim, but the Great Swithiod they called Godheim; and of Godheim great wonders and novelties were related.'

Other lore recorded by Snorri suggests Skaði married Ullr after Njorð.

You must remember that Heathenry is very connected to the land where you live, our ancestors only worshipped the dieties and wights of the land where they lived so when they left Scandinavia they had no call to continue to worship Skaði or Nerthus, when they came to England they were much more interested in Weland and other Gods of these islands. Sky Gods such as Woden, Thunor etc continued to be worshipped as the sky is everywhere.
