What kind of coffee is served on airplanes?

One of the best tasting coffees I have ever tried was on an Air France flight from Paris to Miami. I think it was the same stuff they had on a delta flight from Florida to New York. I was told it was a coffee syrup mixture, but I never found out what kind specifically...Any flight attendants out there know?

NOCANFINDN

Usually below each news article there is a place for users to respond with comments. Today (3/2/12) I noticed that there are no responses for any of the news articles. Does anyone (including Yahoo) know what happened to the responses?
Who is the judge of what a stupid response is? Free speech is free speech isn't it? So is Yahoo the internet police and have they decided they will ban ALL responses because of the seemingly unwise comments of a few? Whatever happened to "Everyone has a right to their opinion"??

Answer
There is some kind of glitch in the system right now. It happens every once in awhile on Yahoo. Currently there are no comments section on any story in any category on Yahoo. I am sure they are working fervishly to correct the problem. They know better than anyone how popular that feature is!

I'm trying to find this website/blog that features the most talked about news topics in all the countries in the world at any moment. From what i can recall the website has colorful cells. Each color represents a different country and the size of the cell represents how popular the news/topic is in the country.
if anyone knows what website I'm thinking of, that'd be great!
thanks in advance!

Answer
Is it http://news.alltop.com/? No colorful cells but only site I could think of.

How to make my video more popular?

popular news trends image

Arcadia

I've tried messaging people to check it out, sharing it on Facebook and Twitter, but I will need some more ways to make my videos popular. I do make interesting topics, and good quality.

Answer
1. Add your YouTube video to video search engines.

2. Make smart, search engine optimized (SEO) titles and descriptions. Tell your YouTube viewers what your online video about with carefully chosen words. Think ahead and ask yourself, "What will people be searching for?" If you are making a YouTube video about the stock market, use terms that someone interested in the stock market will search for.

3. Brand your video! Create a logo in Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator. Add it to all of your videos. If someone steals it, which can happen online (many people use Keepvid.com to steal YouTube videos), your brand will still be on the video. In your brand, include the address of your web site or blog where a viewer can find the original movie content.

4. Promote your videos on MySpace and Facebook. Both social network websites offer easy ways to upload or link to YouTube videos so that all of your friends can view them and tell their friends, as well.

5. Stay ahead of the trends. A way to easily make popular videos is to make them about popular topics in the news or on television. Did Britney Spears do something crazy again? Make a video about it and post it on YouTube. When people search for it on Google or on the online video search engines, they will find it and watch it! It's a natural way to create popular YouTube content and make money.

6. Investigate which of your YouTube videos are doing well using Google Analytics and YouTube Insight and copy what made them successful.

7. Tell people about your YouTube videos using RSS feeds from your personal blog. I would recommend Feedburner.com as a great place to start with RSS feeds.

8. Include a link to your YouTube account in all of your emails. Put it in your email signature. Even when your friends forward your email, it will be included in the body of the message, spreading the word about your YouTube videos and increasing your chances of finding new YouTube viewers.

9. Make "video responses" on YouTube. Go to a video that has a lot of views and comments, and click "create a video response." Now, your video will be linked to the popular video!

10. And don't forget to ALWAYS backup your YouTube videos on your computer. If something happens, you do not want to lose your movies! Backing up your computer is better than having to re-film all of your YouTube videos.

With these tricks of the trade, you can easily make some money on YouTube through search engine optimization and smart promoting of your YouTube content.

how do I get a local news show to do a story on my business?

jhnyblayze

I am getting ready to start a new business. I have seen morning news shows do a story on other local businesses and I was wondering how I go about getting them to do one on mine. Any info would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

Answer
I would suggest you look at your business just as you would with composing a business plan.

Make a list of all the things you are doing that are not done elsewhere.

Then take these examples and combine them with other trends in the area or nation, and especially events reported on the news.

If national marketing statistics indicate a new or renewed interest in your business, then combine this information with visual examples to interest a news team.

If I knew about your business, I might be able to help more. But just as an example: Heading into Recession, pawn shops and betting parlors are becoming more popular, as are used-clothing outlets and swap shops.

These might be local businesses which are different and newsworthy.

Just opening a hairdressing shop like any other hairdressing shop would not be of interest, and most likely will be on the list of businesses feeling the economic pinch with fewer customers each month.

With restaurants expected to close due to the economic downturn, then what is being done at this restaurant to blunt the impact?

Once you have put your finger on something newsworthy, then contact the local newspaper and television stations with your news tip. For the newspaper, make sure you contact the type of reporter (business, lifestyle, science, environmental etc.) who might be interested.

Hope this these examples and this answer helps you.

Aren't they going down the wrong path again with giving these Sandy Hook kids psychartic evaluations?

Insallah

Meaning wasn't the problem with Adam Lanza the medication that these psychology doctors prescribe? Well, I've read somewhere that these kids will be give evaluations and later on in life medication as well to help them cope. Now if one of them snaps in their 20's, whose fault is it?

At any rate, isn't giving these kids drugs the worst thing for them?

Answer
Of course your'e correct. These giant pharma companies exploit the most vulnerable people in society. I think you've seen the phrase "never let a tragedy go to waste" in the news regarding this story recently. In the 90's, Pfizer flew doctors to Nigeria during a meningitis outbreak to do illegal clinical trials on unsuspecting children, numerous of whom died or suffered permanent damage. they gave some kids their new anti-biotic they wanted approval for in correct dosages and then others too little of the anti-biotic already being used to prove their drug was superior.

NAMI, which gets most of it's funding from pharmaceutical companies got busy setting up "mental health emergency rooms" for those affected by the oil spill and demanded that BP pay millions for it.

Lanza's medical and prescription records should be readily available by now, and Lanza is deceased so there is no reason to keep them private. Since they are not public at this point, the powers that be are definitely hiding them.

I see a tremendous amount of intense hatred toward the most popular cable news channel Fox News and their millions of viewers. I get the impression that most of those who hate Fox News and those who watch would really like to see the government shut them down. Would the liberal progressives like to see the government shut down Fox News?

Answer
Not any more than conservatives would want MSNBC shut down.

Personally, I admire Bill O'Reilly for having Jon Stewart & Steven Colbert on his show, and for being a guest on theirs. I really wish there were more of this - maybe Glen Beck on Rachel Maddow's show, or Keith Olbermann on Shepard Smith's show.

It would be a helluva lot more entertaining than either network is now, and maybe - just maybe, both sides might learn something new.

Female heads of state, and religious leaders: http://www.guide2womenleaders.com/index.html

Angalina Jolie for showing what a single woman can make of herself, even after a bad start.

Don't forget mom.

How about a quick look into your own family tree? A lot of us had ancestors who fought hard in the women's movements. Look for the women who won the vote, the women who marched for equal wages, and safe standards. Women who made it legal for a woman to use her own name after marriage, instead of being Mrs Thomas Crely, or something like that. Many women fought at war, rescuing men from the field after injury, or dressing as a man and taking up arms, or riding off in secret to foil enemy plans, or even flying fighter planes during world wars. How about those women who pioneered in dangerous foreign wilderness, or even right here as the first to stand up to the law, and demand divorce, and custody of their children?

How about any of the women on the skydiving fundraiser teams, earning money for cancer research, by jumping out of airplanes, and doing dances together as they plummet to the ground, only to release their pink parachutes?

How about the pink gang of India, who has united to enforce the rights of women and of the poor, and to stop the corruption that benefits from the suffering of the lower class? http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/7068875.stm
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sexualparadox/message/1196

Don't forget male feminists. How about Jos whedon, or Barack Obama, for breaking the mold, and showing other men and women that empowered men can and do have a very positive view of women?

How about the women inventors, who saved the allies form the natzies via code breaking, and who made such things as- have to finish this later.

I need a source to learn about Syria civil war?

I consider myself a very knowledgable guy and I try to stay current with world news, but I have had an extremely hard time when it comes to what's going on in Syria. I have read some conflicting articles and I realize every news source has its bias. I just want to know what's really going on. Thank you in advance.

Answer
The current conflict in Syria has nothing to do with "freedom" or "democracy", it is driven entirely by the geopolitical aspirations of the United States and its middle eastern allies.

The US has wanted to overthrow the Syrian government for a long time, and not because of any "humanitarian" concerns, but because of Syria's opposition to American regional interests, its long-time hostility towards the apartheid state of Israel, its support for resistance movements in Palestine and Lebanon, and its alliance with major geopolitical enemies of the US, such as Russia, China and Iran. By destroying Syria the US hopes to break apart the Iran-Syria-Hezbollah axis and get closer to establishing total hegemony in the middle east.

America's regional allies, namely the totalitarian Sunni monarchies of Saudi Arabia and Qatar, are diametrically opposed to the Shia-led governments of Syria and Iran, and want to destroy them not only for political reasons but also to spread their own influence by exporting their brand of extreme religious ideology (wahhabism).

The US government has admittedly made plans decades ago to carry out regime change in Syria. In fact, it is documented that the US government has given money and weapons to sectarian anti-government terrorists in Syria and provided training to so-called Syrian "activists" BEFORE the start of the current "uprising". (http://bit.ly/KmkQF3)

The so-called "Free Syrian Army" are nothing but a collection of Sunni extremists and Islamist militants from all over the middle east hired to fight as a proxy army on behalf of the United States, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, and to accomplish their geopolitical goals. The majority of the FSA are not Syrians; most come from Afghanistan, Chechnya, Libya, the Gulf states, Iraq, Turkey, Jordan, Lebanon and elsewhere. Many of them are jihadists and terrorists directly linked to Al-Qaeda and other salafi terror groups, including Jabhat al-Nusra (Al-Qaeda in Syria) and the Muslim Brotherhood.

These terrorist groups, which later named themselves the "Free Syrian Army", are the ones who have been causing the violence in Syria since the very beginning. In April 2011 there was a peaceful protest movement calling for reforms within the government, but it was quickly hijacked by the FSA and turned into a violent insurgency. The FSA do not care about freedom, democracy or reforms. It was their goal from the beginning to hijack the legitimate Syrian opposition and start a civil war. They are terrorists motivated solely by sectarian hatred, and they have openly expressed their desire to establish an Islamic state in Syria.

For the past year and a half Saudi Arabia and Qatar have been supplying them with money, weapons and fighters. In April 2011 journalists witnessed armed militants crossing into Syria across the Lebanese border. Every day Syrian security forces find foreign passports on dead FSA fighters as well as shipments of foreign equipment and advanced weaponry in FSA stockpiles.

In the first weeks of the "peaceful uprising", terrorists began murdering dozens of Syrian soldiers, mercenary snipers shot civilians and security forces in cities, armed men provoked violence by shooting at policemen from inside crowds, and Saudi-funded extremist preachers in Mosques incited uneducated Sunni youths to riot, burn police stations and commit sectarian violence, forcing the hand of the Syrian government into what the western media has called a "crackdown".

Since then the "Free Syrian Army" terrorists have killed at least 20,000 people, and have kidnapped and tortured thousands more. They are blowing up government buildings, sabotaging infrastructure, setting off car bombs in residential areas, destroying and terrorizing neighborhoods, forcing tens of thousands of people to flee their homes, destroying mosques and churches, committing massacres, murdering anyone whom they suspect of supporting the government, or anyone who has different beliefs than them (Alawites, Christians, Shiites and moderate Sunnis).

Most "news reports" about Syria shown on CNN/BBC/Al-Jazeera are stories and rumors that are taken directly from anonymous "activists" and Syrian opposition sources without any verification whatsoever. Most of the reports turn out to be completely false, and many times the sources aren't even Syrian.

For example, the "Syrian Observatory for Human Rights" quoted often in the media actually consists of one man in a London apartment

Why do many Americans think that Assad is bad and Syrian rebels are good?

Ahmed

I am Syrian and I want to ask this question. The people who say that Syrian people hate Assad don't know what is going on here.

The people that are trying to overthrow Assad are NOT Syrian civilians. They are members of the Muslim Brotherhood and Al Qaeda linked Jihadists. They are mostly from Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey. In Syria, there are three cultural religious groups: Sunni Muslims, Shia Muslims and Christians. Bashar Al Assad is secular, meaning that people worship in whichever way they choose without persecution. The Muslim Brotherhood DO NOT want democracy. They want to turn Syria into an Islamic state, meaning that it will be controlled by Sunni extremists. In an Islamic state, Shias and Christians will be killed by the Muslim brotherhood government. Most of the terrorist Muslim Brotherhood are not even Syrian, they are from Saudi Arabia, Qatar and other muslim countries. The Assad government is supported by Christians, Shia Muslims and moderate Sunnis, and that means almost everyone in Syria supports Assad. We DO NOT hate our president.

These terrorists that the USA and most western governments are sending to Syria are extremists and kill Christians and Shia muslims for the fact of being so. These terrorists ("rebels" who aren't even Syrian) who are using chemical weapons, and the west is trying to demonize Assad to make it look like Syria is the one who used the chemical weapons so they can justify an invasion of Syria with their own troops.
This is why everyone says that the American people don't know anything about the rest of the world.

I already told you that the Muslim Brotherhood used ch

What are your thoughts of this article?

Warren T

Fox News Channel continues to dominate over the other cable news networks. Its combination of brand differentiation, strong personalities, and fair and balanced reporting have helped Fox dominate over other news networks.
The Fox News Channel began in 1996 as an option to other networks (CNN and MSNBC) for news coverage. Fox adopted a slogan of "fair and balanced" in order to separate itself from the liberal-leaning competition. Americans slowly, but steadily, turned to the network for their news. In 2002, Fox surpassed the competition to become the number one cable news network.
That support has not changed since, as Fox News Channel has been the dominant cable news network for close to 140 months. The latest Nielsen ratings for cable news show how much Fox dominates the competition. During the last quarter, the total-day average of viewers for Fox was 1.18 million. The corresponding numbers for CNN (476,000), HLN (393,000), and MSNBC (361,000), were not close to Fox.
So how is Fox able to dominate the competition? There are three main reasons for the dominance and continued success. Those reasons include brand differentiation, strong personalities, and a focus on being fair and balanced.
Fox employed a unique brand differentiation strategy. While CNN and MSNBC were providing news coverage, Fox wanted to provide different approach to the news. President Clinton was in office at the time, and the media was liberal in their voting and reporting. Fox offered an alternative to the liberal media. The network wanted to give viewers a different approach to news coverage that appealed to some Americans.
The network also hired strong and well-educated personalities that would appeal to Americans. Bill OâReilly and Sean Hannity provided conservative commentary in addition to the news. They continue to dominate their respective time slots.
Fox also maintained a focus on being fair and balanced to their reporting of the news. While some argue the network has a conservative bias, Fox has been focused more on news than MSNBC, which offers more commentary. Fox News programs also have counterpoints from individuals with opposing views. This enables viewers to hear arguments for and against the commentary of the host.
Studies and articles have shown that the media leans to the left. Fox provides an opportunity for viewers to hear different viewpoints without the worry that the news is slanted to the left. This has helped Fox succeed and will continue to drive Foxâs rating higher.

First recorded virus on any Mac OS?

Docere Sue

I am having a dispute with a friend, what is the very first virus on any Mac. I mean even the smallest virus counts here. I am trying to tell him Mac's have had types of viruses for a while.

What's the first virus on any Mac computer?

Answer
Mac virus timeline
1982: 15-year-old student Rich Skrenta wrote the Elk Cloner virus, capable of infecting the boot sector of Apple II computers, predating viruses for IBM PCs by some years.

1987: The nVIR virus began to infect Macs, spreading mainly by floppy disk. Source code was later made available, causing a rash of variants.

1988: HyperCard viruses emerged that could run on versions of Apple's Mac OS 9. One version showed the message "Dukakis for President" before self-destructing.

1990: The MDEF virus (aka Garfield) emerged, infecting application and system files on the Mac.

1995: Microsoft accidentally shipped the first ever Word macro virus, Concept, on CD ROM. It infected both Macs and PCs. Thousands of macro viruses followed, many affecting Microsoft Office for Mac.

1996: Laroux, the first Excel virus, was released. Mac users were unaffected until the release of Excel 98 meant Macs could become infected.

1998: Sevendust, also known as 666, infected applications on Apple Mac computers.

2004: The Renepo script worm attempted to disable Mac OS X security, downloaded hacking tools to affected computers, and gave criminals admin rights to the Apple Macintosh. Hackers also wrote a proof-of-concept program called Amphimix which demonstrated how executable code could be disguised as an MP3 music file on an Apple Mac.

2006: Leap-A, the first ever virus for Mac OS X was discovered. Leap-A can spread via iChat. The Inqtana worm and proof-of-concept virus soon followed.

2007: Sophos discovered an OpenOffice multi-platform macro worm capable of running on Windows, Linux and Mac computers. The BadBunny worm dropped Ruby script viruses on Mac OS X systems, and displayed an indecent JPEG image of a man wearing a rabbit costume. Sophos reported the first financial malware for Mac. The gang developed both Windows and Mac versions of their malware.

2008: Cybercriminals targeted Mac and PC users in equal measure, by planting poisoned adverts on TV-related websites. If accessed via an Apple Mac, surfers would be attacked by a piece of Macintosh scareware called MacSweeper. In June, the OSX/Hovdy-A Trojan horse was discovered that could steal passwords from Mac OS X users, open the firewall to give access to hackers, and disable security settings. Troj/RKOSX-A was discovered - a Mac OS X tool to assist hackers create backdoor Trojans, which can give them access and control over your Apple Mac computer. In November, Sophos warned of the Jahlav Trojan, and Apple issued a support advisory urging customers to run anti-virus software.

2009: In January 2009, hackers began to distribute the OSX/iWorkS-A Trojan horse via BitTorrent inside pirated versions of Apple's iWork '09 software suite. In the same month, a new variant of the Trojan was distributed in a pirated version of Adobe Photoshop CS4. In March, Sophos reported on how hackers were planting versions of the RSPlug Trojan horse on websites, posing as amn HDTV program called MacCinema. View a video of this attack here. In June, SophosLabs discovered a new version of the Tored email worm for Mac OS X, and hackers planted a version of the Jahlav Mac Trojan horse on a website posing as a portal for hardcore porn videos. Shortly afterwards, the Twitter account of celebrity blogger Guy Kawasaki had a malicious link posted onto it, claiming to point to a sex video of Gossip Girl actress Leighton Meester. In reality, however, the link lead unsuspecting users to malware which could infect Mac users.

I`d love to know an easy way to mentalize Miami streets layout ?

Obviously without reading a travel guide.

Answer
The important major highways are I-95, The Dolphin (836) and The Palmetto Expressway (826). Basically, I-95 goes north and south over on the east side of Miami, part of The Palmetto goes north and south over on the west side, the other part of it goes east and west on the north side, The Dolphin goes east and west right down the middle, near the airport connecting the other two. So both The Palmetto and 836 end up connecting to I-95.

There's also US-1 (a.k.a. A1A), which is more of a major street that pretty much follows the coastline over on the east, and US-27 (a.k.a. Okeechobee) which is a major street bordering the west side.

I-75 is becoming more important to the north and the Turnpike is sometimes useful for "far away" places (like the Hard Rock Casino).

But street driving is pretty easy because almost all the streets have numbers and vectors (i.e. NW 167th street is at the upper northwest part of the metro area). Here's a very good description of this:

Dade County runs on a fairly simple grid system provided you are not in Hialeah or Coral Gables (more on those later). The grid, much like everything else in this city, was planned with all the foresight of a 17-year-oldâs retirement plan. The center of the grid is located in the extreme southeastern corner of the city, at the intersection of Miami Ave and Flagler Street downtown. Every street north of Flagler is northeast or northwest, and similarly every street south is southeast or southwest. Miami Ave. is the East-West dividing line, which is odd since if you go five blocks west of Miami Ave. in downtown you are right in the middle of Biscayne Bay. So what this leaves us with is a whole county full of streets that are âWestâ of the âcenter.â They stretch well into the triple-digits.
http://www.miamibeach411.com/news/index.php?/news/comments/miami-traffic/

Miami is one of the easier major cities to learn. Once you have the basics above memorized and you've looked at a map to get a good mental picture of where the highways are located, it's pretty easy to remember.

What are the chances Willie Williams gets ANY shot to play in the NFL?

Christian

Yes, he made a ton of mistakes(mostly at Miami & Louisville), but look at some players in the NFL who've done bad things & been given another chance:

Ricky Williams failed multiple drug tests & was given another chance by the Dolphins & the NFL.

Leonard Little is responsible for vehicular manslaughter & he was given another chance.

What about Willie Williams?

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=cr-williewilliams042009&prov=yhoo&type=lgns

Answer
Guys that have done a lot worse than Willie Williams are in the league.

He could be a late round draft pick but more likely will get signed to an undrafted free agent contract for training camp. After that, it's up to him to show he's got the talent and attitude to be in the league.

Can anyone be so kind to briefly explain to me what are the latest news on health care reform in an unbiased manner? for instance, why in the original health care plan was a government option and then in the second one it wasn't?

Answer
There is a main overall plan with many different variants being talked about. And the government option is still being discussed. The sixth link below goes into it in more detail.

FACT - Insurance companies in the USA admit to pushing up prices, buying politicians and not paying out claims when they should
FACT - PER PERSON the USA spends more on healthcare than any other nation on the planet
FACT - Obama debated his plans before the election for healthcare
FACT - the chance of a child under five of dying in the USA is greater than industrialised nations with universal health coverage
FACT - Obama was elected by the American people to bring in change
FACT - Obama wants to stop insurance companies from screwing the American people
FACT - The reforms Obama wants work in the Netherlands and Switzerland

Let me know if my facts are wrong, but please provide proof.

Me and my three friends need a Christmas arrangement for Christmas. We need something that is not to hard but very fun to listen to. Anything of a popular Christmas arrangement would be fine just as long as it sounds good. Thanks!!

Answer
If you can't find anything, I would suggest playing straight out of the hymn book, with the violin and oboe on the two treble parts and the cello on the bass part.

I once tried to start a newsgroup which would match persons with specific requests like yours with composers and arrangers who were able and willing to meet those requests. For some reason, though, the newsgroup never got off the ground.

I've been hearing about it on the news and on Twitter. I'm not extremely into celebrity gossip but I'm curious as to why this seems so big? I know it's a wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, but what makes them & their wedding so big?

Answer
He's second in line to the throne. It is possible some day she will become queen. Any children they may have will likely become the king or queen of England some day.

He carries on a tradition of the monarchy for those nations which are still in the Commonwealth and are not republics. She'll presumably be making trips to various places, opening hospitals, having ships named after her, etc. Her children might become the official head of state for various countries and have their pictures on the back of their money.

Kate will also become a princess. This being the ultimate fantasy of many young (and not so young) girls fed by fairy tales, Disney films, romance novels, etc. It's a big, lavish wedding ceremony with lots no expenses spared -- palace guards, horses, carriages, massive churches, dresses costing a small fortune, thousands of people cheering them, etc. Again, feeding into wedding fantasies.

Many people remember the wedding of William's father and mother and her death. For those following William, folks are normally happy that he's happy and a nostalgia over his parents wedding.

How can I help my friend meet her idol?

Rachael

My friend who lives in Nottingham, England is a really big fan of Darren Criss who plays Blaine in Glee. She loves him so much, bless her and supports him as much as she can as his career increases. If I could help her meet him that would mean the world to me and I'm sure it would mean the world to her. Where do I begin?

Answer
Your friend can visit the personal web pages of Darren Criss (or any favorite stars). Look for any upcoming appearances at a location near you.

Read gossip magazines and take note of restaurants, bars and clubs where celebrities flock. While most venues will be in major cities, stars who are filming on location often visit neighborhood eateries and night-life spots.

Read fan Internet blogs. These often provide information on when and where movies and television shows are filming.

Do you see a correlation between modern feminism and communism?

popular news shows in the 1950s

Answer
Yes all feminism stemmed from communist politics,

Betty Friedman, a founder of feminism:

Betty Frieden, the "moderate" feminist founder, who hid the fact that she was a Communist activist, compared homemakers to concentration camp victims. Simone de Beauvoir, another Communist founder, said women must not be given a choice to be mothers and homemakers because they'll choose that option. According to feminist Ellen Willis, feminism "is the cutting edge of a revolution in cultural and moral values...The objective of every feminist reform, from legal abortion...to child-care programs, is to undermine traditional family values." (The Nation, Nov. 14, 1981)

"In a new book, "Betty Friedan and the Making of the Feminine Mystique", Smith College professor Daniel Horowitz (no relation) establishes beyond doubt that the woman who has always presented herself as a typical suburban housewife until she began work on her groundbreaking book was in fact nothing of the kind. In fact, under her maiden name, Betty Goldstein, she was a political activist and professional propagandist for the Communist left for a quarter of a century before the publication of "The Feminist Mystique" launched the modern women's movement."

http://www.writing.upenn.edu/~afilreis/50s/friedan-per-horowitz.html

http://www.salon.com/col/horo/1999/01/nc_18horo2.html

"But Horowitz also reveals a dark side to Friedan's social activism: Betty Friedan was a long-time participant in the American Communist movement.

Here is Betty Friedan's true story (page numbers from the Horowitz book are in parentheses):

Friedan was first exposed to socialist thinking while an undergraduate at Smith College in the late 1930s (pp. 39-49).
Beginning in 1940, while still a junior at Smith, Friedan became an outspoken advocate of the Popular Front, a pro-Communist umbrella that embraced a broad range of radical groups (p. 10).
While studying psychology at UC-Berkeley 1942-43, Friedan was a member of the Young Communist League (p. 93).
From 1943 to 1946, Friedan worked as journalist at the Federated Press, a left-wing news service established by Socialist Party members (p. 102).
In 1944, Friedan requested to join the American Communist Party. According to her FBI file, Friedan was turned down because "there already were too many intellectuals in the labor movement" (p. 93).
From 1946 to 1952, Friedan worked as a journalist (some would say "propagandist" is the more accurate term) at the radical United Electrical, Radio, and Machine Workers of America. According to historian Ronald Schatz, this labor union was "the largest Communist-lead institution of any kind in the United States." (p. 133)."

http://www.ifeminists.net/introduction/editorials/2003/1125roberts.html

Gloria Steinem, another feminist Icon:

"In May 1975, Redstockings, a radical feminist group, raised the question of whether Steinem had continuing ties with the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). Though she admitted work for a CIA-financed foundation in the late 1950s and early 1960s, Steinem denied any further involvement.[10] Steinem was also a member of Democratic Socialists of America.[11]"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gloria_Steinem

In a 2002 book, Red Feminism: American Communism and the Making of Womenâs Liberation, feminist historian Kate Weigand states: âideas, activists and traditions that emanated from the Communist movement of the forties and fifties continued to shape the direction of the new womenâs movement of the 1960s and later.â(154)

In fact, Weigand, a lecturer at Smith College, shows that modern feminism is a direct outgrowth of American Communism. There is nothing that feminists said or did in the 1960âs-1980âs that wasnât prefigured in the CPUSA of the 1940âs and 1950âs. Many second-wave feminist leaders were âred diaper babies,â the children of Communists.

Communists pioneered the political and cultural analysis of womanâs oppression. They originated âwomenâs studies,â and advocated public daycare, birth control, abortion and even childrenâs rights. They forged key feminist concepts such as âthe personal is the politicalâ and techniques such as âconsciousness raising.â

Did man really land on the moon?

Q. If so, why could they do in in the 60s but not now? Why aren't people going there all the time and showing us great clear colour images of it? I just don't think it was possible back then, I have no doubts that they could do it now if it is possible to go that far and survive in such an atmosphere.
Um, I just went to google moon and saw nothing but a few fake locations, so fake that you can't zoom in all the way.
Please, I know who the first man that supposedly landed on the moon was. No need to give me names, like that will prove anything. And why is there no purpose in going again? Is it because they have since knocked down the studio that it was originally filmed in or something?

Answer
Firefoxy, get this straight and don't be foolish about it any more, okay? The basic technology required for a manned flight to the moon was developed in Germany in the late 1930s through the mid 1940s. This technology needed a lot of refinement to make a safe manned flight a reality.

We worked on that technology through the 1950s and 60s, and made the first moon flight in 1969. It all fits together, and if you read all the history and don't let the wackos lie to you, it will be impossible for you to continue to be fooled into believing that the moon missions did not take place.

The American people were much better educated and more intelligent in the 1960s and 70s than they are now, and it would never have occurred to NASA engineers and managers that 35 years later a bunch of ignorant dolts with nothing to do would come up with a stupid conspiracy theory stating that the moon landings were faked.

If that had occurred to the engineers, I suspect they would have gone to the trouble to create a larger and more visible object of proof, to compensate for the decline in the quality of the American mind and its education that occurred during and after the Reagan presidency.

But there is a real physical proof available. The astronauts who landed on the moon left behind reflectors that are used every day by astronomers to measure the irregularities of the moon's orbit. This is done by bouncing laser beams off reflectors at known locations that were left by the astronauts. Ask your science teacher for information about these experiments. You can arrange to see this done with your own eyes.

Let me put the question to you this way: If you think the moon landings were faked, when did they become "fake?" When did the idea become popular that NASA had invented the idea of an imaginary moon mission and created a huge technological empire to fool people? When was all this fakery done? In the 60s? 70s? 80s?

And why? What was the point? And how did they fool all the people that reported the news, operated the machinery, built the moon rockets, and watched them take off and land?

Do you realize that one American in 500 was a part of the Apollo program? Millions of them are still alive. Are they fooling you? Why? If you go out to a football game, look around you. In the stadium there are people who worked on the Apollo program.

Ask around. You are surrounded by people who know for sure that American astronauts stood on the moon more than 35 years ago.

And the reason why we have not gone back is that it is terrifically costly and there is no reason to spend money to go back. We found out what we needed to know, and if we ever need to know more, then we will go back then. At the time, we needed to "beat the Russians." That is no longer an issue. So why spend the billions?

As a lover of geology, this news caught my attention tonight! That lake was the size of ten football fields and the scientists cannot explain this!

Now, as this news cast continued, they said that Lake Superior is doing the same thing!

I can more understand the lake in Chile as they have continuous earth quakes and such from the subduction zone. However, I am not understanding Lake Superior at all!

Can anyone enlighten me? Please, only intellectual answers please!
POPS!!! What a hoot! You are brilliant!! I don't think this is the answer but, it was well thought out and hysterically funny! I should give you best answer just for the laugh!!!

Have you ever considered writing? You should!
Critters! Thanks so much! The fissure makes perfect sense! I knew it had to have something to do with earthquake activity but, was not sure what occured! Wonderful information!! I appreciate the information about Lake Superior as well!

Answer
Lake Superior

I just finished reading the article in USA Today about Lake Superior.

Listen to this:
" Researchers at the University of Minnesota and elsewhere study whether Lake Superior's low water levels are a result of global warming. The average water temperature of Lake Superior has risen 4.5 degrees Fahrenheit since 1979.

A drought and warm weather are the immediate cause of the drop in water levels. In the past year, precipitation was 6 inches less than the average of 31 inches. The lake's southern shore had a green Christmas in 2006. The ice and snow pack that usually cover the lake arrived late, allowing water to evaporate. ...

Many people living near Lake Superior don't buy drought or warm weather as the reasons for dropping water levels â a conspiracy theory is more popular. They say Lake Superior was drained through the St. Mary's River to raise the levels of Lake Huron and Lake Michigan. " ??

Here is the link to the entire article - do read it as it is quite good.
http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/environment/2007-06-13-lake-superior_N.htm

Average: 601.92 feet
Current level: 600.25 feet.
Lowest recorded level: 599.92 feet in 1926

Maybe it is not disappearing at all.

Glacial lake in the south of Chile.

In March everything was fine but "we went again in May and to our surprise we found that the lake had completely disappeared. All that was left were chunks of ice and an enormous fissure."
...one idea is that a strong quake which hit the neighbouring region of Aysen in April opened up the fissure in the bottom of the lake.
... allowing the lake's water to drain through.

Christians: How do you know which parts of the Bible are literal, and which aren't?

warmsanfra

Popular Christian opinion on Biblical stories and their context has changed countless times since it's conception. (creation story, flood, Exodus, etc.)

It seems every generation has a different take on what's literal, and what's merely symbolic/allegorical.

Even today, Christians can't all agree on what's what.

How do you know what is literal and what isn't?

Answer
Well the first step is understanding the Bible isn't a one genre publication, it is more of as an anthology.
If you try to teach an anthology as a factual text book you will have problems (as we can see in present day.)
For example say a person picked up a book that it was an anthology of short stories, non-fiction literature, poems, and informative news articles about City Life.
If this person tried to teach it as a non-fiction text book on City Life the publication isn't being presented properly.
Thus it wouldn't make sense to take all of the text literally as all of it's contents aren't written in the way that would allow it to be taken bluntly.
Same with the biblical studies, I think the mistake is that people treat the bible like a one genre book (either completely factual or completely fictional) and thus the understanding of the bible becomes muddled.
If you have a general understanding of literature and how the written word is published you would understand that the bible is a compilation of of poems, testimony, letters, etc all under the topic of Christian Spiritual Philosophy.
Concordantly you would understand some parts of that book were allegorical and poetic while other parts were informative and timelessly relative to the human condition.
Now there will always be people arguing over what is literal and what isn't because no two people share the same perspective, and you can attribute that to us being human.

Overall I think the first step in discerning what is what would be to understand the genre of the text itself and go from there.
If people were to understand the bible is a anthology perhaps it's message would get through better.

Peace and Blessings = )
