Do the people of Turkey and Iran have the same religion?
Sweet n So
There's recent news about Turkey's revived close relationship with Iran so I was wondering if they have any cultural similarities such as religion.
Answer
Yes, Iran and Turkey have a Muslim majority, at least a majority that is muslim in name. Iranian Muslims are mostly Shi and Turkish Muslims are mostly Sunni. Both have Jewish and Christian minorities.
The history of the two countries actually goes back many thousands of years. The Turks in Turkey are descended from Ancient Greeks, ancient Iranians, Hittites, and of course, the Turkish invaders that arrived there in the Middle Ages. The Iranians are descended from ancient indo-european tribes that migrated to the Middle East many thousands of years ago from southern Russia(there were no Russians there back then) and Central Asia.
The Turks formed the Ottoman Empire and the Iranians, the Iranian Empire(known as the Persian Empire in the west). It should be noted that the Persian Empire was revived after Alexander and though it collapsed several times, it always restored itself and continued well into the 18th century.
The Ottoman Empire(established in the late Middle Ages) fought with the Persian Empire for 3 centuries though neither side could defeat the other. The last major battle ended in victory for the Persians but the Persian Empire collapsed some time after since the last emperor was killed.
Turks today have certain traditions borrowed from the Iranians and are similar to the Iranians in the area of culture because of this.
