Personally, I don't judge an artist based on album success, concert sellouts, specials, collabs, etc. on the simple fact that there are other factors like marketing that influences certain things. I just judge an artist by how good they are at what they do, the content of their songs and if they try to do or say something different that not many other artists do (in other words, take risks).
I'm sure most can agree that they are both good at what they do, which is make good songs and rock a crowd. I finally got to see Nas live for the first time last year and it was one of the best sets ever. However I do feel in terms of production earlier in their careers, Nas has gotten shorter end of the stick. I really liked I Am, but the production was lacking a bit. I agree, I didn't like Nastradomus or God Son, but Stillmatic was great. Jay-Z seems to have a lot better production on his albums.
But then again, unless these artists made their own beats and produced their own songs, you shouldn't use this to judge them as artists. I mean, I'm sure they do have control over what beat to rap on, I think it's unfair to consider this in assessing them in who is better as an "artists."
Lyrically, Nas now isn't as great as he was back on It Was Written. If you compare his style from now and back then, you can hear that his lyrics now aren't as crafted and poetic as he was originally known for. As for Jay-Z, he seems to have gotten a bit better or at least more consistent with his lyrics and style. I only say "seems" because I haven't actively listened to Jay-Z since the Blueprint.
The one thing I believe Nas definitely has over Jay-Z, which I think makes him better, is his willingness to talk about social and political issues through his music. It's one thing to talk about and glorify hood/gangster life, drug dealing, partying, etc, in your songs and its another thing to take it a step further and talk about social and political problems to hopefully bring out about change for the better.
Although over the years, I sorta lost interest in Nas especially with albums like the Streets Disciple. However his latest album "Untitled" made me respect him so much more because of the topics he choose to rap about in his songs. He finally understands that there are a group of elites that have been running America and presents this information through the mainstream in his music. The reason why he chose to call his album the N word was because in the eyes of the elites that secretly control our country, we are only sheep. It doesn't matter if you are white, black, asian, hispanic, middle eastern, etc... unless you are a wealthy elite, that top 1% that controls most of the wealth in the America, you are just a n******. He also exposes FOX news as extreme right wing propaganda in Sly Fox.
In my opinion, a true artist is someone who uses his skill and talent to open the eyes of the world to try to teach and uplift people to do something for the greater good. I'm not saying all of Nas' songs are like this, which they are obviously not. But he was willing to say something different and a bit controversial that not many other mainstream artist out there would say. And out of both artist, I always knew Nas would be the only one who put out songs like he did in Untitled, which is why I think he is a better artist.
I've always liked Nas since I started listening to him back in 96. At the time, I liked Jay-Z also especially his first and second album. I think the reason why I started off liking Nas better was just they way he presented himself as opposed to Jay-Z. Jay-Z just seems like cocky, arrogant person, which I don't like. Although I like Nas better, I liked Reasonable Doubt better than Illmatic.

Jay-Z vs Dehaven?
Jamila H
can anyone shed some light on the two, If you have the lastest news about the issue let me know thanks
Answer
Check this out, everything DeHaven states is true, no doubt. Back in the day, those two were closer than close, yet Jay was definately the "lil bro." and Gill was the big bro. I personally believe that Jay owes him some "conversation", heck...he owe a lot of people some of his time, including me. Jay was never one to be out there, like that. He was always laying low, chilling in the crib, but...all the while collecting, dressing, eating, writing, rapping and beating on whatever he could to make music, to make sound. By doing this, he has become very successful yet...has forgotten where he has come from and who all was there to help him get that fame and fortune. It's sad but true, he has bruised a lot of hearts and seems to care less, which is wrong. I hope this does not become violent and neither of the two get hurt behind this. I pray that this makes Jay take a moment and think about what is being said and how Gill's feeling are justified. If the shoe was on the other foot, he would feel the same way too. No doubt when he thought he was being forgotten back then, he had something to say and Gill would listen and oblige. Now it's his turn to listen and make amends with not only him but...all those he forgot about. The two of us were really close back then and I personally accepted him into my home and put up with a lot of stuff from him and all the NY or NJ boys. I loved each and everyone of them, they were my brothers and you know they each pooped on me too. It hurt a lot when not just Jay but all of them left me stranded and treated me as if they never ever knew me. But...I chose to let God fight all my battles for me for what goes around, comes around, each and every time. As far as what Headache, as some may call him, is doing goes, I understand, I feel his pain. It frightens me for there appears to be no fear, which is really scary but.....a man has to do what a man has to do. This should get Jay's attention and hopefully, he will now talk to DeHaven, remember his brother and stop ignoring him. He is hurt, you can see it and hear it in his voice, when it speaks on the videos. A lot of people have been getting on him and complaining about his language, stuttering and diction overall, but if one would take a minute and look into his eyes, they can see the pain, he is feeling. The diction is messed up due to the pain and hurt this has caused him. He say it is about money, and yes, money is involved, but...it goes way deeper than that, just as says. It's about friendship, trust, loyality and simple common courtesy. People been saying, it's too late to say or do something now, it's never too late. Not too much could be done while "D" was locked up, now could he? But...apparently, he been working on this chapter in his life the entire time while locked down. He tried to contact Jay several times over and so did I for that matter. In the beginning, me and his Neices attempted to keep in contact with him too and would call, of which there was one time we got through and pass his secretary to speak to him. After that one and only time, we have never spoke to him again, he would not answer the messages nor return any of our phone calls. Again...common courtesy, if it wasn't for us doing this..........or if it wasn't for us doing that.........he would NOT be where he is at right now and that's for sure! I pray that Jay still has a conscious for I know he use to way back when. For we spent a lot of time together, day in and day out. Such that we talked a lot and shared a lot of each other with each other. We could talk to one another from the time we awakened to the time we went to bed. And it was not like that, we never crossed the line, we were friends, brother and sisters. I cooked, I cleaned, I did everything for him and all of those guys for they were "my boys" and like I said, they all forgotten about me when times got hot. They left me stranded, with a drop of a dime, thus having to handle a lot of things on my own, which was not fair to me, what so ever. I was Gill's girl, but we all were one, we all were a family and they all broke my heart, each and everyone of them. Not once did I complain or turn my back on Jay or DeHaven for that matter but.....it was what is was. I was strong, independent and moved on but.....always in the back of my head wondered, "what happen?" Why? Quite often Jay and I spent more time together than me and Gill for like I said, he would lay low and just chill. I missed him when he was not there and of course you know I missed my man too, yet...understood that time changes, people change and life goes on. But...I never thought our friendships where like that, they were all that!! Therefore...I knew in my heart I had some friends for life, so I thought. Well...through it all, DeHaven and Mom and myself remained friends, remained a family and have kept in contact, in spite of. Jay...if you read this, I know after thinking about this, you should know who this is and all I ask for you to do is...........remember where u came from and who was there with and for you from the start. I am happy for your success and I knew you could do it, but.....over the years, it has hurt me also each and everytime I heard your name, song or video. I could not and would not listen to them, heck......most of the stuff I had already heard anyhow, I was there when you wrote those lyrics, remember? Your neice for years wondered why you never called her about doing a video. Remember that? Promises where made to the girls too and kids hurt ten times more than we do. You and Gill need to make amends; there was something special there and you know it. As well, don't forgot about Mom's, she hurting too. It takes a real man to admit when they're wrong and take action in regards to their mistakes. If any man can do that, I know you can!! When this is all over said and done, come look me up and I will fix one of those good 'ole home cook meals you use to like. What would it be, an italian meal of spaghetti with garlic bread or some good ole fried chicken wings with the hot sauce? I'm praying for each of you and the friendships each shared.
