The latest news regarding the capture of a Basque terrorist piqued my interest on the subject of Basque independence. What I don't understand is how the Spanish differ in political thought from the Basque people.
What exactly do the Basque seek to gain from independence? Are they restricted in some way now that doesn't directly benefit their culture? Is it unresolved religious tension stemming back to the Carlist wars?
Answer
I believe they want their land back too. Spain just took over the Basque country as if it's people didn't exist. Picture us taking over Mexico. Not exactly fair.
The Basque people were well established then, even today, they have the world's oldest LIVING language.
In a perfect world, the Basque terrorists would stop killing people and Spain would return what was rightfully theirs.

Why is the Gulf of Mexico named after Mexico?

Enigma
With the latest news of a bunch of idiots killing Pluto and the newly discovered planet, this brings about a fair question.
Why is the gulf of Mexico named after Mexico?
Why can't we change it to the Gulf of America since Mexico and the USA border the body of water and they both are on the N American continent.
It will probably never happen, but then again, why not? After all, it is no different than the topic of Pluto being tossed out of our solar system's planets.
Answer
It was named after the guy who discovered it - Norman Juan Mexico de Cordoba y Ulm (1483-1557)
