It's about as safe as any driving is nowadays. If you're in Dallas now and watch the news you know it's not always safe to drive 635 or I-35.
As for trip planning,... don't carry a lot of cash on you... use credit cards or debit cards if possible and don't let anyone get a peek at your PIN numbers. If you stop for gas and plan on using the pump credit card slot, be sure it hasn't been tampered with. I'd suggest using the indoor one if possible unless the outside one looks very secure and safe. Oh, and one of my "musts" when I travel is I always stop at Truck Stops for gas and eats. They are always busy with lots of people around. (Not always a deterent but anything helps.) Always lock your car, even if you're just pumping gas or going in to pay for the gas. I would also suggest getting a good locking gas cap if you don't have one. Keep any and all valuables you might have in your car out of sight and take the expensive stuff (laptop, camera, etc) in your motel with you at night. Park in well-lit and well-traveled spots... never away from the building in the shadows. And, above all, be very aware of what is going on around you. If you see anyone who looks suspicious or acting strangely or coming toward you, get away from them. Keep a tight grip on your wallet and keys too. I don't mean to make you feel paranoid but there's nothing wrong with being extra cautious, no matter where you are but especially when you are traveling. Travelers mean cash and extra money and unfamiliarity with their surroundings.
As for planning, you could just buy a Road Atlas and map your route out that way or map it out on the internet. There are a number of sites that will help you do that. You can note sites you might want to see and make plans to stop in certain locations there as well. If you belong to AAA you could go to one of their local offices and they could plan the trip for you at no charge. I would suggest AAA or some other Auto Club to anyone who is traveling. They can come to your rescue if you have car trouble. Oh, and make sure your cell phone is charged up.
Personally, I would get the Road Atlas then take I-20 west and hit I-10 (outside of El Paso) then hit I-8 south of Phoenix and taking that into San Diego. You might also want to keep an eye on the weather as the departure date draws near and plan your travel accordingly. February can have some interesting weather. For example, last year in Dallas on February 1st, the low was 24. 3 days later, it was 82 for a high.
Sorry for this being so long. :)
Good luck on your journey!

More juveniles from Mexico with 200 pounds of marijuana what if he threw rocks would actvists demand justice?
Maricopa C
(CNN) -- U.S. border patrol agents Friday found a crude tunnel, apparently used for smuggling, underneath the concrete-lined Rio Grande River near El Paso, Texas.
The discovery came as authorities were investigating suspicious activity in the city storm drain system and came upon a juvenile from Mexico with 200 pounds of marijuana.
"This is another example of smuggling organizations actively recruiting juveniles to smuggle narcotics and humans," said sector Chief Randy Hill. "These organizations are exploiting the youth of Mexico and putting their lives in danger."
Mexican authorities were called in to locate the tunnel entrance on the Mexican side.

Where was our news media? Where was our president and congress? Why does the official move from Washington go against American private citizens and their guns, and not an all out war against the drug cartels using fully automatic military weapons, hand grenades, launchers and machineguns? Why is the president pushing for an international gun law that will bring registration and finally gun control to we American citizens? Who is for free and lawful American citizens? Where are our statesmen? Where are our patriots and where are champions for the Constitution and freedom and safety of American citizens?
This is not a false cry of Wolf! Wolf! The wolf is already ravaging the sheepfold. Until now we are acting like sheep and are in great danger of losing the greatest treasure on earth: freedom and opportunity for us and our children and grandchildren. WAKE UP AMERICANS!
Look what they found near the Texan/Mexican border! This will open your eyes & make you think! What are they planning?
A PRIME example of why we MUST support our neighbors in Arizona, and bolster the Texan border. This was a Zetas camp (a Mexican cartel w/ Guatemalan ties) that was found near Higueras, Nuevo Laredo, Mexico. The "state" of Nuevo Laredo borders the Rio Grande, and this town is a little over 100 miles away from Laredo, TX. Please forgive the crude translations; my Mexican Spanish isn't that great. -J.
Exactly where did you hear about it in OUR media? Thank God for the border patrol that this did not come over the border. There is one "graphic picture" but it tells the story.
Let's quit trying to decide who is violating our federal laws "to make a better life", and ENFORCE the laws across the board on EVERYONE violating them.
That way we won't have to lament or wonder just how many of the illegal aliens legalized (synonymous with rewarded) under the latest attempt to legislate away the millions who have spit on our laws, are MS-13, Zetas, cartel members, and other scum that would be "legal". There are many Hispanic men and women that I both love and respect that understand and support Arizona and any citizen's desire to keep our country a safe place to live and raise our children and grandchildren. It's not racist, and it's not xenophobic. I hope we can ignore and recognize the majority of the naysayers for the photo-op, attention-loving clowns they are, and start coming together as AMERICANS that want what's best for AMERICA !
Must see these photos........
