One gorgeous town, and if you love baseball you will love this town--Cooperstown, which is upstate New York.
I love not just the Hall of Fame, but the quaintness of the town, itself.
Probably the biggest piece of advice I would give anyone visiting any large city if you wanted to visit NYC is-
1) Don't be frightened by the stories you hear. Yes, things do happen, and they will happen more often where there are more people, but also remember news sells, and our nation's media loves to concentrate on the exceptions because those who follow the rules are not news. You'll see "in your face" people, and I would not have said this before Rudy Giuliani was Mayor, but don't be frightened by the tone in one's voice or by the fact that someone may approach you--say "No" if that one does, don't judge the millions of others by the one bad example, and just walk on if it happens--and know that most of the time it doesn't.
You will find things in NYC you will not find anyplace else--the Statue, the Empire state, the UN, the stores, the Theater, so many other spots...and to deny yourself the chance to experience them when you can is a shame, I think...because you won't find these things elsewhere.
Not every part of Manhattan is dangerous...you can walk the streets and enjoy yourself...If you're traveling late at night and don't feel safe going by subway, there are Taxis, and Buses...
You're a Southerner, and we know that many southerners have their own prejudices...so, accept that the greatest similarity between all of us is we are all difference--
And, above all, remember, you are the only one who knows you are "small time southern." So many people come to NYC with an accent-foreign or domestic-the rest of the world won't notice you are "small time" if you don't tell them. Look forward to this being an experience you wouldn't forget, and you might be surprised--it will be large, it will move fast, but if you just soak it in, you will love it.
I have taken people from Louisiana around the area-and they absolutely loved it. The Towers were around then, and we went up to the windows and while we could feel the building swaying, we could see all over the place...and it felt great...a similar feeling to what one feels atop the ESB.
Hope you visit, and enjoy it.

Cheap bus rides to Boston from New York?
tess_d2
I dont live in USA but im travelling to New York in April. After a few days of being in New York im planning on going to Boston. I can take a flight but was wondering if there was a bus system that i could take? I dont have much money to take a flight and would be such a hassle getting to the airport and stuff.
If there is one, is there anyway i could book it online? Any websites?
Answer
If you have any strong desire to either get there alive or have a pleasant trip I would STRONGLY suggest you find a little extra cash and use any option other than Fung Wah. There are several things you can count on in Boston...traffic jams, the weather changing frequently, and FungWah being on the news every few weeks for another bus crash or traumatic event. I wouldn't take them for free!!!!
Now that said, let me see if I can find you some better options that are still affordable. Grayhound bus is $22 one way or $38 round trip. I'll put the link below for info and etickets. That really isn't that bad, and is SO much safer! Ok just checked there site...Fung Wah is $15 each way $30 rt. So it's only $8 difference to take the safe bus!!!! WELL worth it and still very affordable!
You don't mention if you are going from the city of Boston to the city of NY, but one of my favorite ways to travel if not driving is via train. And if by any chance you are going anywhere outside of either town, esp on the NY end, than train is absolutely the way to go as it offers more options. If that's the case it might justify paying a little more, as it will save travel later. City to city, I still feel it is the nicest way, but it is pricier, especially if you take one of the high speed trains. I'll poke around and see if I can find any deals and if so I'll come back and add the link.
But the bus isn't that bad...just try to avoid hitting any of the major cities (NY, Boston, Hartford approx 2 hours out of NY) at rush hour if at all possible. Not only is it unpleasant, but it can really slow down your trip.
