Artist of the Year - Taylor Swift http://www.canada.com/American+Music+Awards+winners+losers/2256842/story.html Music stars from every genre showed up to Sunday night's American Music Awards to see who the fans voted as their favourites. Featuring incredible performances, and pop-stars wearing insane outfits, it's no surprise that thousands of screaming fans flocked to Los Angeles' Nokia Theater to show their love for their favourite musical acts.
Janet Jackson opened the awards with a high-energy medley of her hits, including 1986's Control and 1997's Together Again. Backed up by plenty of dancers, Jackson proved she hasn't lost any of her showmanship skills, and the audience went wild when she broke into her latest single, Make Me.
The Black Eyed Peas took home the first award of the evening for favourite pop/rock group, winning out over fellow nominees Kings of Leon and Nickelback. The supergroup later performed both Meet Me Halfway and Boom Boom Pow, which included a brief interlude of the riff from Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit. Country group Rascal Flatts beat out Sugarland and Zac Brown Band to win favourite country band, the fourth consecutive year the band has taken home the title.
Country newcomers Gloriana were shocked to win the Breakthrough Artist Award, edging out Keri Hilson, Lady Gaga and Kid Cudi. The band members couldn't contain their surprise when they accepted the award, asking anyone in the audience to raise their hands if they hadn't heard of Gloriana before. Later, Samuel L. Jackson presented the award for International Artist of the Year to Whitney Houston. Clad in a white, flowing gown, Houston used her Herculean voice to sing I Didn't Know My Own Strength, after which the audience gave her a standing ovation.
As expected, Michael Jackson won almost every award he was nominated for, including one for favourite male pop artist. The deceased legend was remembered throughout the night by friends and family, who expressed their thanks to Jackson's fans for their continued support.
But in a shocking upset, country darling Taylor Swift beat Jackson for Artist of the Year, the night's biggest award. Swift came away from the AMAS with an impressive haul, also taking home statuettes for favourite female pop artist and favourite female country artist. Although stuck in London rehearsing for her international tour, the 19-year-old appeared via satellite to express her obvious glee and surprise at her wins.
The awards ceremony was padded out with several performances, including a highly anticipated appearance by Rihanna, who sang Wait Your Turn while dressed in a skin-tight catsuit and spiked shoulder pads that shot lasers. Lady Gaga gave a predictably out-there performance of Bad Romance and Speechless, in which she and hordes of dancers pranced around in nude bodysuits and LED accessories that accentuated their more risque areas. To close out the show, Adam Lambert performed a self-described "sexy" rendition of For Your Entertainment, which featured him gyrating awkwardly with dancers clad in S&M- inspired costumes. Other performers of the night included Kelly Clarkson, Alicia Keys, Jay-Z, Green Day, Jennifer Lopez, Eminem and 50 Cent.
