What style and color prom dress would be best for me?
Cassidy
Hi everyone! I'm very tall, about 5'11", and I would consider myself pear-shaped with an average weight. I also have very broad shoulders from swimming.
As for coloring, I have pale skin with pink undertones, green eyes, and dark brown hair.
What color/style prom dress do you think would be best for me?? I really like the idea of an empire waist dress, but I'm not sure if it would be figure-flattering.
Thanks so much for your help!
Answer
I've found that it helps to try and see if there is a celebrity out there with your general body type. Once you've found her, it helps to look at pictures of her on red carpets, and see the type of dress that she tends to wear. That way, you can see what may or may not look good on you!
If your body is shaped like Rihanna's, you are somewhat of a "modified" pear:

You likely have a slim waist that gradually transitions into hips that are wider than your bust. However, the difference is that your shoulders somewhat balance out your hips. Therefore, the best silhouette for you would be a sheath style dress that comes to the knee or slightly shorter. Necklines that reveal your shoulders are best, such as a halter, wide V-neck or strapless sweetheart style. Opt for a slim-fitting bodice, which will accentuate your silhouette. Boat necks also look great, but stay away from scoopnecks or jewel necks, which will make your shoulders look broader. Empire waists look fantastic on you. Your body type looks great in little cocktail dresses with embellishments such as beading, sequins, or ruching at the neckline and bust.

If you are shaped more like Alicia Keys or Jennifer Love Hewitt, you are the "traditional" pear shape:

You have a slim waist and wide hips, but your shoulders do not balance your hips. The best silhouette in this case would be a structured A-line. As for the rest of the dress, the same guidelines listed above apply.
