I am a newcomer in Dhaka, Bangladesh. I am a private English tutor. I have taught students of Std III-IX in my home district. From now on I want to live in Dhaka & want to teach students in batch. Please advise me how to collect students of Std III-IX. Please also give me some ideas.

Answer
I'm from Dhaka, Bangladesh. Please do not read me wrong since I understand your saying "...private English tutor" would mean that you taught English to individuals (mostly in their homes) or it may be such that you taught English in any organized 'Coaching Centres' under the supervision of trained 'principal(s).

In the first case you may go through Newspaper classified-ads where the parents/guardians ask for hiring house-tutors to impart English lessons to their ward(s). In the later case, you may find the names of hundreds of such 'Coaching Centres' as advertised in Newspapers and sometimes through leaflets or posters displayed in prominent places all over the city and approach them if they would require an English teacher of your calibre?

Sometimes prospective English-teachers do write their credentials by hand or type on papers and make lots of photocopies and paste the same at the entrance of renowned educational institutions where they value English as a subject of importance.

Unfortunately, English has taken a very badly placed back-bench in Bangladeshi society and educational arena when the first government of Bangladesh led by our popular leader decide to shelve English from classes and now we have educated people who are not getting any suitable job or even progress in international business circles where their India, Sri Lankan and Pakistani, to some extent, counterparts are cornering mostly half-educated (in English) Bangladeshis on free-ride!

Therefore, if you are really good in teaching English then you need not to worry about your getting students, since sometimes the words-of-mouth travel faster than what costly advertisements could do for you.

Wish you all the luck in your stay and finding suitable job/business opportunity in Dhaka!

Since English is so widely used in India, do Indians tend to read more in languages like Hindi, or in English?

Chris

Which do they tend to get more exposure to? Are novels written in English or Hindi more popular?

Answer
Most people do their education from English-medium schools so they read many English books. Signs are often in both English and Hindi. For text messaging and emails, people often use English script but Hindi words. Newspapers are available in both languages. Highly educated people tend to use English more as they have spent more time in the English-speaking educational environment. Of course a person can be highly educated in Hindi as well, but for example, in sciences, it is much easier to learn in English as having uniform terms for everything makes collaboration with other scientists easier. So I would say Hindi gets more exposure in person and in video, but English is more widespread in the print media.
