Advertising is their only source of income. A good audience runs up advertising rates. Local news usually does pretty well. There are plenty of millionaires in TV news.

Is the internet popular these days because tv has become garbage?

All this reality crap, bad anchors and "experts" on the news channels and just bad coverage in general, bad sitcoms compared with the last decade, mtv no longer playing music videos, even todays cartoons are no fun to watch. I hate watching tv these days, only watch it for sports and sometimes adultswim, and very occasionally comedy central. Is it any surprise that the internet is way more popular now that tv sucks?

I agree, tv is absolute garbage.. I doubt it's the reason that there are so many people who use the internet though.. the internet has about a billion more uses than the tv does.. I mean, I can't find a Chi-Square calculator on my tv.
