What is the purpose of news? Do you think in today's time the news is doing what its intention is?

I feel as if the purpose of the news is to provide us with information. But as I analyze the news, the stories that they are showing are not what they used to be. For example the news would consist mostly of war updates, or state what is going on. News today is more random stories that gets their station more viewers. Am I the only one who sees it that way?

Answer
You try putting a whole countries news, as well as international news into a half hour show.
And at the same time, keep everyone happy in terms of what they want to hear and what they dont.

Its impossible.

There is two sides to every story. Producers of news programs struggle daily as to what they should air, what is popular to air , what is necessary to air, what has to be aired, whether they air something and what reaction it has from viewers. As well as fit in sponsored commercials (which everyone hates) that pays for the news show to be produced.
Keeping in mind, in that hakf a hour show. Ten minutes is taken up by sport and weather. Possibly another five minutes of sponsored commercials.
So there goes 15 minutes of the news show already, without even telling anyone any news.

Feel like being a news show producer?............

As i said, its impossible to keep everyone happy in regards to what they want to hear.

I could go on..........After all that. The producer also has bosses and network bosses they have to report to. Questioned as to why they did not show a particular news story and lost ratings to another network.

So your copping it from the viewers for not telling every news story in the country in a half hour show , as well as international news. And your copping it from behind, by you network bosses because of ratings.

What you want to hear you have to google. Its the only way. Because prime time news can not fit all that news in a half hour show OR an hour show.
In fact, if they told you every news story there was, it would be a 24 hour show, running around the clock without stopping.

Ask yourself how much despair and bad news do you want. Because quite simply, all news is bad news.
Your not going to hear how your neighbour planted roses on a sunny day.
Your going to hear about war, rapes , car accidents, volcanoes, terrorism or any other million bad things.

And even if they did do all that that you request, then you would be complaining you can not understand the news reporter. You dont like their hairstyle. You dont like their makeup. His/her nose is too big.
Blah blah blah!

Just do what everyone else does. Buy a newspaper and read it at your own pace.

how do I get a local news show to do a story on my business?

I am getting ready to start a new business. I have seen morning news shows do a story on other local businesses and I was wondering how I go about getting them to do one on mine. Any info would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

Answer
I would suggest you look at your business just as you would with composing a business plan.

Make a list of all the things you are doing that are not done elsewhere.

Then take these examples and combine them with other trends in the area or nation, and especially events reported on the news.

If national marketing statistics indicate a new or renewed interest in your business, then combine this information with visual examples to interest a news team.

If I knew about your business, I might be able to help more. But just as an example: Heading into Recession, pawn shops and betting parlors are becoming more popular, as are used-clothing outlets and swap shops.

These might be local businesses which are different and newsworthy.

Just opening a hairdressing shop like any other hairdressing shop would not be of interest, and most likely will be on the list of businesses feeling the economic pinch with fewer customers each month.

With restaurants expected to close due to the economic downturn, then what is being done at this restaurant to blunt the impact?

Once you have put your finger on something newsworthy, then contact the local newspaper and television stations with your news tip. For the newspaper, make sure you contact the type of reporter (business, lifestyle, science, environmental etc.) who might be interested.

Hope this these examples and this answer helps you.
