Hey there. Congrats on your new bub!
It may be hard for some people to give answers to your questions because popularity can depend on what country that person lives in. I, for example, am an Aussie, and my answers may be very different from those of someone in the US, UK, Europe, or South America.
For popular entertainers, you could probably list Lady Gaga pretty safely, though. She's everywhere!
World Leaders: well, the Australian Prime Minister at the moment is Julia Gillard. She is our first female Prime Minister, so that's kind of a history making thing (even though she's hated by just about everyone here!!!)
For best selling authors, you could probably look up the New York Times Bestsellers List, or the equivalent if you're not American.
Popular TV shows in Oz at the moment include Revenge, New Girl and . . . sorry, I don't watch much TV, or much of what's "popular" anyway. I hate reality TV, and that's what we're stuck with a lot at the moment.
For news headlines, you could search the net for major national newspapers in whatever countries you think of and look in their news archives for news stories from last month.
Hope that helps. Good luck with bub, and remember to look after yourself, too. :)

Is this an example of an alarmist climate scientist?
Ottawa Mik
For background, a National Geographic article (among many others) in December of 2007 reported with a headline: "Arctic Sea Ice Gone in Summer Within Five Years?" This headline was based on the reports from senior scientist at the government's snow and ice data center in Boulder, Colorado Mark Serraze and Jay Zwally. Some direct quotes:
"The Arctic is screaming," said Mark Serreze.
Jay Zwally said: "At this rate, the Arctic Ocean could be nearly ice-free at the end of summer by 2012, much faster than previous predictions."
In June of 2008, Mark Serraze was quoted as saying: "I'd say it's even-odds whether the North Pole melts out." Among other things Serraze was quoted include: âThe set-up for this summer (2008) is disturbing,â along with his description of Arctic sea ice in a âdeath spiralâ.
I asked a question last week about the media reporting the Arctic sea ice extent this summer if it breaks a record. Well, the stories are already rolling in. In a report today on Yahoo news, the headlines read: "Arctic cap on course for record melt: US scientists". Serraze is again quoted in the article as saying: "The numbers are coming in and we are looking at them with a sense of amazement,"
How can Serraze have a "sense of amazement" at the possibility of breaking the 2007 summer low Arctic ice extent record when only five years ago he and his co-worker thought the Arctic may be ice free this summer and that the ice was in a "death spiral"? Is that how alarmists operate?
@Gringo: "...there appear to be inconsistencies between the published remarks by a couple of scientists now and some years ago?"
Well at least you got that part right. Serraze should actually have had a "sense of amazement" that the Arctic is not nearly ice free this summer. Now that would have been consistent.
@Hey Dook: "... be honest enough to cite your true sources."
I did here: "In a report today on Yahoo news, the headlines read: "Arctic cap on course for record melt: US scientists". You could at least show me the courtesy of actually reading my questions if you want to make accurate insults about me.
Answer
If Mr Serreze and/or Mr Zwally had their very own high-traffic blog were they posted that and had they failed to argumentate their opinions, then yes they could be considered alarmist climate scientists.
But these are climate scientists (usually not trained in Press Relations) giving an interview to a popular magazine/site which then chooses which bits to publish and which to leave out. As long as we do not know the contents of the whole interviews, it is impossible to tell. But you already knew that. You don't want to ask a question, you just want to further critisize legitimate climate scientists as much as you can.
<<Among other things Serreze was quoted include: âThe set-up for this summer (2008) is disturbing,â along with his description of Arctic sea ice in a âdeath spiralâ.>>
The 'death spiral' reference was made by Serreze in a reaction to deniers' false claims that the Arctic is gaining ice. "There are claims coming from some communities that the Arctic sea ice is recovering, is getting thicker again. Thatâs simply not the case. Itâs continuing down in a death spiral" is what he said. (1)
<< Is that how alarmists operate?>>
So lets recap: we are heading for record low ice-coverage in the Arctic, as predicted scientifically by many climate scientists for decades already, yet you Ottawa Mike, with your obvious 'interest in climate science' given the number of questions here, believe THE most important issue now is the fact that there appear to be inconsistencies between the published remarks by a couple of scientists now and some years ago?

Right.
