I am learning Korean. I know a very very very small amount of vocabulary and grammar. If I study every day for a year, would I be able to survive in korea by the end of that year?

Answer
Yes you will. I have been seriously studying Korean since last March, and for over a year now if you count when I first started and really wasn't motivated. You can learn a lot in a year. In 7 months I've learned enough to get me by in Korea, and freely express myself if needed to an extent. I email Korean friends in Korean, have conversations with them, and can read some news (not much though). Still, there is just a ton more that I have to learn of course since there are so many parts to a language. But what I'm trying to convey is that if you study Korean seriously for a year you will be able to get by pretty well in Korea.

I don't know if you're using books or not, but I'm sure you wouldn't mind if I recommended some books recommended to me, and ones that I have used?

I've only been using two books. The first is Spoken World Korean [http://www.amazon.com/Spoken-World-Korean-Living-Language/dp/1400023483/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1287526126&sr=8-1 ] . It's really good, but grammar explanations is lacking in some lessons in the book, and the dialogues though amazing can be confusing as they sometimes have words in them not yet introduced (some not till later in the book). But I'd definitely recommend it to you seeing as when I first got it I knew no Korean at all. It will force you to learn hangul. After lesson 5 you have to be able to completely read hangul because romanization stops being used.I love the cultural notes given too. They correspond to the lesson, and are helpful in helping to understand why koreans act/do things in a certain way.

The second book that I'm currently using is Speaking Korean by Francis Y.T. Park. [ http://www.amazon.com/Speaking-Korean-Book-Second-Revised/dp/1565913558/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1287525896&sr=8-1 ]
I just got this book, and only around lesson 5 so far and my Korean is already improving. Right after you learn a new word, it is used in a sentence below with the English translation beside. On the next page it goes into detail about the new words learned. How they're used, etc. Then after that other things like grammar/vocab are introduced, and at the end of the lesson 2-3 pages are devoted to practice constantly rewriting sentences. The thing I hate about it though is that the CD could be better. Also, there is no romanization in it! The first 30 or so pages are devoted to Hangul, then after that romanization virtually disappears. I personally didn't like the way they explained how to pronounce the characters, just my opinion though. This book is pretty big (about 400 pages and 46 lessons), and it's apart of a series. Book 1 is to get started, and basically get you to an intermediate level, possibly advanced (haven't got through it to tell). Book 2 continues from book 1 reinforcing what you learned while introducing new material. You don't have to get book 2 seeing as book 1 will be enough to greatly expand your Korean (it even says this). From book 1 you can go straight to book 3 or book 4. Book 3 is for Hanja. Not a bad idea to learn considering Korean takes a lot from Chinese, and Book 4 covers vocab, phrases, etc. used in the media.
If you buy all 4 books then I'm sure you could be at a higher intermediate or advanced level in Korean.

Other books:
Step by Step Korean 1 & 2[ http://www.amazon.com/Step-Korean-Bk/dp/1565911326/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1287526264&sr=1-1 ]--explaining Korean grammar for beginners. Good book, but not as detailed as the 2nd I'm about to give.

Korean Grammar for International Learners by Yonsei University Press http://www.hanbooks.com/korgramforin.html ][--If you really want your Korean grammar to explode, then I'd get this book. I can't say when to buy it though. It goes into great great great detail; which is a plus, but I don't know, I wouldn't buy it to start off. That's just me.

Is there any country that feels it is safe from terrorism?

Dr. HOUSE

It seems for the welfare of the rest of the world INCLUDING China that no one country is safe to me! With this latest London airport issue is it time to put a stop to this? Time for the major powers to make a decision? The BIG decision? Its obvious that Iran, Syria, Libya, Cuba, North Korea, and Sudan arent capable of policing their countries! I feel for the innocents but lets get real here! For those of you who havent heard the latest, watch the news before you post! There is a very high possibility that these idiots could destroy all humanity with chemicals! I say put them out of our misery and divy up the leftovers!
Apparently 006 hasnt watched the news....well when your laying on the ground and choking to death with your beloved children maybe you will change your mind?
That goes for question boy too!
Call me terrored! Not terrorist!
You people who make these stupid comments need to sit down with your photo album and take a good look at pics of loved ones, children and grandchildren!
20 planes filled with deadly chemicals could very easily destroy 75 percent of the population here in America!
To question boy again, category A chemicals alone could easily destroy half the world over in a matter of weeks! Are you that naive to think they wanted to blow the planes up to merely kill the people on them?
The plan was to blow them up in mid air! Use some common sense!
In my opinion, to kill a couple million innocent victims to save 600 billion others is a matter of mathematics! Those of you who feel any differently are the people who WILL kill the world off while thinking that this isnt going to happen! One simple gallon of a class "A" bio weapon in an airplane blown up in the dkies over a large populated city could easily destroy all of mankind in a matter of weeks! It is YOUR idiocy that will be the death of us all!

Answer
Of course not!! NO ONE is safe from terrorists!! Not one soul...and if there is ANYONE out there that believes otherwise...you are deluding yourself.
