New Year is traditionally the time when the nation emerges from its collective hangover and valiantly resolves to start afresh. Is this annual attempt at self-improvement a useful opportunity to achieve a worthwhile goal, or just a misplaced waste of time and money?
While the virtuous are busy lacing up their brand-new trainers and piously loading their shopping trolleys with fresh fruit, there are many who regard the ritual of New Year’s resolutions as a doomed attempt to destroy any form of fun. With the return to work and post-Christmas normality already dragging us down, the thought of swapping a couple of glasses of red wine and dessert for a celery stick and a morning run can be too much to contemplate.
