I just wonder why its necessary for someone to tell in the first place unless they want to. I mean, really, whose business should it be who a person dates?

Sports stars are celebrities and everyone is obsessed with celebrities. They see it as this big hidden secret and that type of stuff sells really well in magazines and gossip sites.

The sports stars come out because they want to be happy and live more freely. It really isnt anyones business.. but they're celebrities - people want to know everything about them.

I don't think celebrity endorsement for a cause is academically desirable. It is like a plea to false authority. It is more suited for a gossip magazine or tabloid.
